Tell the Truth gets you thinking ... and doing.

Marketing has changed in recent years. Global interconnectivity via the Internet has redefined the way that brands are built and managed. For many marketers adapting has meant frantic experimentation with the latest social media platforms, viral tactics or online metrics. My advice: Stop and read this book first. Because if you want your brand to benefit from all these nifty new tools and tactics then you'll also need to adopt a new mindset. That's what Tell the Truth is about: Providing marketers with a new conceptual framework for building brands that can compete in today's wired world.

I found Tell the Truth a lucid and enjoyable read. Underman and Baskin provide original thinking, clear writing and lots of examples to help the reader unlearn prevailing marketing dogma that was shaped during the media monopoly of the last century. Chief among these beliefs is the notion that truth is optional.

While Tell the Truth makes a compelling case for why truth is the most powerful marketing tool we have, it's not an esoteric ethical treatise. It's a hands-on field guide, full of practical advice for implementing truth in your day-to-day marketing efforts.

With talk of branding, establishing a proper advertising platform, and the demands of our ever shortening attention plans, nothing seems more likely to have undergone a revolution in the last 15 years than the sometimes not so gentle art of persuasion in the marketplace. Unerman and Baskin make a notable case that what worked thousands of years ago--honesty--is what will work now in the increasingly freewheeling world of advertising, where truth seems like the first thing to go in the need to sell a product. Unerman, an advertising executive, and Baskin, a well known consultant and author of an influential column in Advertising Age bring hope, pleasure, and a damn good read to a topic that could have been depressing. Denial ain't just a river in Egypt!

This is one of those warm-and-fuzzy feel good books. Why? Because once you understand the concepts and core principles of Profit First, you realize that perhaps you weren't doing it right. Then you realize that from this very moment forward (or at least the moment you finish Chapter 4 - "Choose Your Own Adventure") that you most certainly can attain financial freedom. You'll stop working like a slave to your business, and you'll feel better working with your customers.

I actually picked up the hardback version first (because I love making notes) and then got turned onto the Audible.com version, which is narrated by and includes extra commentary by the author, Mike Michalowicz. If you've never heard Mike speak, he has tremendous energy and sincerity that meshes quite well with his own brand of humor. It can be useful to follow along while he reads, making notes along the way. I did the same with one of his other books, The Pumpkin Plan: A Simple Strategy to Grow a Remarkable Business in Any Field.

Following Mike for the past three years, I've known about the Profit First system for a while. I implemented a half-arse version of it late last year, surprising with success. Why? Because I (unknowingly) used the concept of 'removing temptation' by keeping my Profit account hidden from my other accounts. I can't lie, I have some bias (and love) for Profit First because it worked. I also befriended Mike over a beer on the rooftop of the CreativeLive San Francisco studio, which in turn led to me being able to preview this book.

Why am I telling you this? Simple. Three months ago I learned the other pieces of the jigsaw puzzle while reading it. I put Profit First to work for real, and I've seen nothing but positives in my business and personal finances (yes, it works there too - and is discussed in the latter part of the book). For the first time in five years, I made a quarterly tax payment, on time. And I did it without sweating bullets, crapping my pants, and trying to figure out where the money would come from. Thanks to Profit First, I already had that money set aside - again in a hidden account that I only need to access four times a year. Then I took my profit distribution, and I bought myself something nice. Meanwhile, my business kept on doing what it does best.

Look, I could go on forever telling you what rocks about this book. And no, it's not Def Leppard (that's The Pumpkin Plan), but that's about the only thing missing. Grab whatever your flavor - sexy hardback, cyber Kindle, or soothing Audible - just make sure you grab it. This book will make you profitable, which will grow your business, which will ultimately make you happy and be able to answer the question "How healthy is your business?" with a wide, toothy grin from ear-to-ear on your face.

I couldn't review this book any other way than positively... especially since I've been involved in one way or another for the entire process of creating the book from concept testing - I read earlier articles about Profit First in the Wall Street Journal and on Mike's blog, in his 2nd book The Pumpkin Plan, and was there in the CreativeLive studios when the concept literally exploded in the brains of hundreds (or possibly thousands) of live, online business owners participating in the 2-day live Pumpkin Plan Workshop recording. (It's still available for purchase, but even better Mike will be back again at CL for Profit First in August!).

When I started my business 5 years ago, I spent A LOT of money on business books about how to be a consultant, how to launch a startup, how to run a green business, how to become your business brand... and most of them are still unread because they're just too much information and overwhelming even to read.

I can honestly say I don't think I bought ANY books on small business accounting or how to be profitable... I just believed the rule of thumb (that may have been true at the time but isn't anymore) - plan on 3-5 years before your startup business is profitable.

So for my accounting, I just did the best I could, and tried to make sure I could pay my bills when business was lean, and was able to spend more when my business was flush, happily tricking myself into believing I was running a "profitable", healthy business, that from the outside looked like it was growing. But I was in denial.

Most of the time, when people are in denial about something so sensitive as their business or money, the process of resolving the irrational fears and embracing REALITY is a personal process that can be extremely painful (impacting personal lives), and takes a long time to rehabilitate both the business and owner, to get to the good times.

The good thing about Profit First is that it's like the first time you visit the pain-free dentist and he really IS!

When you read this book, you'll see that becoming permanently profitable in business is as simple and easy as making the change in your brain to manage your business and $$ allocations by taking your profit FIRST, and budgeting for expenses LAST, after you've already allocated salaries & taxes.

Mike delivers the message in an easy to read, entertaining way, with lots of personal stories shared (including my own, about the moment I realized I'd been fooling myself all these years, a slave to my business). Within just a few hours of reading, I am sure you'll have the entire simple concept and system and be ready to become profitable today!

You won't Profit First until you read this!

I have been a fan of the author Mike Michalowicz, author of The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur, and most recently, The Pumpkin Plan. Mike is the quintessential entrepreneur and his first two books for have been a true inspiration for me as I navigate the often turbulent waters of small business ownership. I am not complaining, when I opened my latest company in the summer of 2009, arguably the WORST time for a start-up (especially if you wanted any bank financing), Mike's Toilet Paper Entrepreneur was the inspiration to keep me trudging along, "paycheckless", getting up every morning with a smile on my face knowing that I was building something.
Then came The Pumpkin Plan. Just what my business needed after struggling through the worst economy in decades and waking up to realize that the doors were still open and the lights were still on. Through that book I learned the art of nurturing your best customers and releasing the worst. A valuable concept that I certainly should have been able to figure out myself. . .but I didn't. Mike did, and I followed his formula and my business is now much better because of it.
My problem is, I am an entrepreneur. I'm not an accountant, I'm not a banker. I'm an entrepreneur. When I saw Michael come out with his latest book called Profit First I thought. .WHATTTT??? Profit first. How novel! I had another "ahh haa" moment; Why didn't I think of that. Well, once again, after getting a complimentary first 5 chapters, I can say "Don't miss this one!" I think Mike has outdone himself this time. He not only talks about accounting in a language that non-accountant can understand, but he makes me want to give this book to MY accountant and say. . "Learn this!" "Help me make this happen for me!"
Do don't waste your time hemming and hawing over whether or not to get this book. There are tons of business books on the market and I have read most. This book is well worth your investment of the minimal cost and the time you will spend enjoying it! If you are an entrepreneur, or THINK you are, then this is a MUST READ. My favorite thing is "MIKE ISN'T TRYING TO UPSELL YOU ANYTHING! So many authors give you just enough information to get you to buy their "plan." Not Mike. This is the real deal! In fact, you would do your fellow entrepreneurs a HUGE favor by purchasing a copy for them as a gift! They will thank you a 100 times over! Happy reading, and happy profit!

Age has indeed withered the proprietress of London's Temple School for child actors, but custom has yet to stale her infinite, cadging variety. Freddie--born Frieda Wentworth--is Penelope Fitzgerald's most marvelous sacred monster, a woman insanely devoted to her art. Over several decades she has foiled debt collectors, creditors, and bailiffs at every turn. What matter if Freddie's Covent Garden redoubt is freezing and falling apart, her own office-cum-bedroom a haven for must and dust, mold and mothballs? When one would-be financier has the temerity to display a balance sheet, she orders him to put it away, "in the tone she used to the local flasher." After all, this force of theatrical nature can always rely on actors and theaters for desperate, last-minute donations. On the other hand, it is 1963, and the school is threatened by others specializing in film and TV training, but so far Freddie is sticking to her Shakespearean guns.

The Temple's permanent staff consists of an unskilled handyman and Freddie's assistant and dresser, the possibly malevolent Miss Blewett. Its acting coaches include a man who's made his career out of understudying Nana, the dog-nurse in Peter Pan. Needless to say, the students are not impressed. To further trim expenses, Freddie has hired two new teachers from Northern Ireland. One, Hannah Graves, is qualified; the other, Pierce Carroll, decidedly not--but Freddie hires him for other reasons: "She had heard in his remarks the weak, but pure, voice of complete honesty. She was not sure that she had ever heard it before, and thought it would be worth studying as a curiosity." These two innocents are in academic charge of the young thespians, an egomaniacal, mostly mendacious lot. (In a stage school, after all, insincerity is a good thing.) But Freddie's does house one genius: 9-year-old, unknowable Jonathan Kemp. Even his guinea pig inherits his bad luck, and is soon devoured by one of the theater district's roving felines. Jonathan seems destined to be overshadowed by Mattie Stewart (later Stewart Matthews), a showoff who at least has the grace--even if it is manifested in spurts of violence--to know himself inferior. Meanwhile, we watch Pierce fall in love, hopelessly, with his colleague. Alas, he hasn't a chance against the dissipated actor Boney Lewis, though Hannah tries not to destroy him: "At the corner, she gave him a hug and a kiss, as one does to a cousin, or to the inconsolable."

The strange world of theatre - children's theatre

What a surprising book and what a funny one. The first Penelope Fitzgerald I read and a lovely introduction to her wonderfully witty work. "At Freddie's" is life in a slowly fading London Theatre school for children. It is the 1960's and Freddie, who is the mysterious woman who runs the school, believes that children should be trained for Shakespeare and for the stage - not for the fleeting career of television and advertisements which are starting to pull children from other schools.
Into this world drop Carroll, an unsuprisable Irishman, who doesn't seem to be able to do anything. He applies to Freddie for a job as a teacher but admits he can't really teach, or in fact do anything. Freddie hires him because he is cheap and honest, and he procedes to do just what his interview shows he could do so promisingly - nothing. But he has fallen in love with the other teacher who applied the same day, Hannah. Hannah is more ambitious and wants to 'chose, not be chosen'. A dictate which runs her life. Their relationship is played out against the lives of school's precocious children, mostly the strange friendship of Mattie - a 13 year old child over-actor and the quiet, self-contained 9 year-old, Jonathon.
It was a wonderful, fun read.

A totally original character

At Freddie's may not be the absolute best of all Fitzgerald's novels (the competence is so stiff), but Freddie may very well be her most original and likeable character. If you love theater, Shakespeare, London, have a sense of humor and some respect for children's creativity for mischief, in all probability you will be as defenseless against her as all the other characters seem to be in this very compact, very enjoyable and unexpectedly moving novel . All Fitzgerald books can take us to other worlds, the world of Freddie truly deserves to be visited.

Theatrical Skullduggery

Penelope Fitzgerald is at her most devilishly entrancing in this tale revolving around the London acting school run (and I mean RUN!) by Freddie, a larger-than-life Gorgon whose will cannot be resisted. Fitzgerald has fun skewering the backstage pretentions, intrigue and petty jealousies of the London theater world of the early 1960s, but, clearly loving every seedy corner of it, she celebrates it with such gusto that you want to sign up on the spot for a season or two. That combination of wryness and fondness makes this short novel among Fitzgerald's most satisfying. And when Freddie goes out looking for a pound or two, hang on to your wallets!

great read

This is a page turner from the moment you open the book. A good suspense with a little romance between lindsey and zack. She kept my interest that I had to force myself to put the book down so I could get some work done. This is the first Mary Burton book I've read and I plan to go check out and see what other books she has out. I put this author with my other favorites like Lisa Gardner, Mary Clark Higgins, Laura Griffin, Tami Hoag, Sandra Brown, just to name a few. Highly recommend this book.
