The humble railway freight car, "a brawny, toil-hardened vehicle ready for the long haul," transformed America between 1830 and 1910 by carrying the nation's goods cheaply and expeditiously. Full of the romantic appeal of trains, and boasting hundreds of rare photographs, sketches, blueprints and documents, this monumental study focuses on the construction and design of freight cars but also delves into yard operations, rate wars, work hazards and more. In an unprecedented phenomenon in the history of U.S. business, the interchange system permitting the free exchange of cars among rival railroad lines unified rail transport, shows the author. The replacement of wood-framed cars by steel cars around 1890 ushered in a freight revolution and pitted Charles Schoen, pioneer of the steel freight car, against crafty steelmaker Andrew Carnegie. Smithsonian curator White has produced a treasure trove for railroad buffs, historians and students of technology.

From Library Journal
White, a historian emeritus at the Smithsonian Institution, has written the definitive work on the American railroad freight car, at least up to 1910. This massive work (32 cm. high) is a companion piece to the author's The American Railroad Passenger Car ( LJ 6/1/78), and it is done with the same care and thoroughness. The book is primarily technical in nature, with many drawings and details of construction. As such, it is an excellent reference work, of invaluable help to historians, railroad enthusiasts, and model railroad hobbyists. However, the author also includes excellent chapters on the economics of freight cars and railroads in the 19th century. Locating the data for this book was difficult; few primary sources were available, and journals provided much of the data. The photographs give good illustrations of the freight cars and the times. This is essential for historical, railroad, engineering, and hobby collections.

Review
"This extraordinarily comprehensive tome is for anyone who lived through the glory days of rail freight or simply wants to know more about it... A book that while eminently readable will serve as a standard reference for decades." -- American Heritage
"Beautifully written... Unrivaled access to archives of documents, drawings, and photographs... A fascinating account that takes the reader into the real world of 19th-century railroad operations." -- George A. Kennedy, Railroad History
"The American Railroad Freight Car is a remarkable work. Although it features encyclopedic qualities, it is thoughtfully organized, illustrated, and written. As might be imagined, White has conducted an enormous amount of research, tapping a remarkable variety of primary sources... White has again produced a definitive tome... No one knows the subject better than he." -- H. Roger Grant, Business History Review

A truly great deal.
By Moses
There are some exhaustive reviews already posted here, so I won't repeat what has been already said (and I agree with all of it). I will simply say that I think it's an extraordinary value for a car reference of this magnitude. A truly great deal.

There is no other comparable work on freight cars
By Demosthenes
The author, John H. White, Jr., was for many years the curator of land transport at the Smithsonian Museum. His knowledge of the subject matter is encyclopaedic, and he clearly loved his work. This monogram, and its two volume companion on the American Railroad Passenger Car, stand alone as books of their type. Well organized. Endlessly informative. It is very, very rare to find railroad publications that have been written by authors with the level of academic training in science, history, logical argument, and writing ability found in these works. Highly insightful explanations of the evolution of technology.
These books are labours of love, and it shows.

Much More Comprehensive Than The Title Suggests
By Blue Dog
This book is supposed to be about freight cars, and back to early ones at that. It does a splendid job of that.
But, there is a large portion of the book that precedes the freight cars and is about American railroads in general. This part is covered in depth. And, the author is capable of writing from a high level and painting a big picture of railroading that is among the best I have ever read.
Some of these topics include traffic, rates, the division system, interchange of cars, union influence, and standards. The car interchange issue, for example sounds like it would be really, really boring, but the writer handles all of his subjects in a way that you come away fascinated and saying to yourself, "That really makes sense." There is a story of a town in Ohio that had one railroad on the east side and another on the west side, but goods traveling through had to be ported across town by horse, never by rail, in order to maintain the jobs in that town.
The drawings in the book are very good. I have purchased Car Cyclopedias from various years of interest to me for very detailed drawings on almost every conceivable subject from plans to parts. The drawings here in this book are a good place to start.
I highly recommend this book. It is expensive and well worth the price. This from a judicious buyer, some might even say a tightwad, who always looks for the best bargain. This is the best book on the subject and I can't think of a second.
