Revealing the astounding mammalian diversity found on the largest Philippine island, The Mammals of Luzon Island is a unique book that functions both as a field guide and study of tropical fauna. The book features 120 fully illustrated species profiles and shows how the mammals fit into larger questions related to evolution, ecology, and biogeography. Luzon’s stunning variety of mammals includes giant fruit-eating bats; other bats so small that they can roost inside bamboo stems; giant plant-eating rodents that look like, but are not, squirrels; shrews that weigh less than half an ounce; the rapidly disappearing Philippine warty pig; and the long-tailed macaque, Luzon’s only nonhuman primate.
While celebrating Luzon’s remarkably rich mammal fauna, the authors also suggest conservation strategies for the many species that are under threat from a variety of pressures. Based on a century of accumulated data and fifteen years of intensive study, The Mammals of Luzon Island delivers a message that will appeal equally to scientists, conservationists, and ecologically minded travelers.

A Magnificent Book
By Jim Cootes
Let me start this off by saying my knowledge of Philippine mammals is minimal (at least before reading this book). My interest is in orchids of the Philippines, and the wonderful natural diversity that can be found in the Philippines.
This book is a major contribution, to our knowledge of the mammals of the island of Luzon, in the Philippines. It is it is written in an easy to read and simple to understand style. The illustrations are clear and concise illustrating each species perfectly. Not only are there images of the many mammals, but also of their various habitats.
The book is in two parts: Part One discusses "The Biogeography of Diversity" and is divided into 8 chapters beginning with "The Mammals of Luzon" as known between 1895 to 2012; next is a chapter on the Climate and Habitats; followed by Discovering Diversity; then Geological History and Fossil Mammals; chapter 5 is about Producing Diversity: Speciation and Diversification; following is a chapter on Habitat Disturbance and Invasive Species; next is Conservation of Luzon's Mammalian Diversity; and Part one finishes off with "Synthesis: Biogeography Theory and the Mammals of Luzon."
Part Two is of "Natural History of Luzon Mammals." It is in this part of the book, where all the known mammals of Luzon are discussed, and briefly described. With each description there is a colour drawing of the species concerned, plus a map of the island of Luzon showing where the species occurs. For some species there are colour photographs of the animal taken in natural habitat. For a number of the species there is only an illustration of the head.
If you are interested in mammals, this is a must have book and it will embellish any libray.

Bless my library, I could never afford this book ...

Bless my library, I could never afford this book and likely would not otherwise have read it. It's a fairly technical book, some of it beyond my limited background in the subject. It is informative, though.
Luzon is the big island where Manila is located-of the thousands in the country. Heaney is part of a team that has studied mammals on the island, so he--and they--know the subject well. Luzon has quite varied topography, including numerous mountain areas, so the growing population (42 million people on Luzon at this point) may affect lowland and arable areas hugely but mammals persist and in some areas prosper. The island has some interesting residents, but a relative poverty of native carnivores or large mammals. Most of the diversity is provided by bats, cloud rats and earthworm mice. There is a native deer and a native pig, and humans apparently long ago introduced civets and macaques. There are of course the usual intrusive species of rats and mice and such, but these have not wiped out much of the native fauna--the book speculates that the native species are used to stress from a natural regime of frequent typhoons, volcanic activity and earthquakes.
The book is really two parts. The first is almost a textbook, discussing environments, change, various habitats, habitat change, human pressures (such as timber cutting, clearing for agriculture, poaching, pollution), and then a guide to the species--the bats, rats and mice mostly. The descriptions are short but well done. It's not a pocket guide you'd take on a walk in an upland forest, but it gives a vivid sense of the animals.
The book is rather optimistic about the future. Heaney thinks that conservation would become more of a concern if educational programs were coupled with a sense of pride in what is unique to the island. Average family size is dropping and fully a quarter of the work force works outside the country, the remittances home increasing prosperity and easing human pressure on the environment.
