Since 2009, Dan Ryckert's life has been well documented. Whether through his writing, live appearances, tweets, or thousands of hours of videos and podcasts, his work has been seen by many. He's set two Guinness World Records, earned the ire of legendary baseball players, penned two novels about an alligator fighter pilot, raised thousands for charity via custom Super Mario Bros. levels, and works a side job as a professional wrestling manager. These are the stories that people already know.
Before jumping headfirst into the public eye, Ryckert's history was just as unique. He's been a Catholic schoolboy and an insufferable movie theater employee. He's befriended the insane and almost been stabbed. Time and time again, he's taken long shots that have inexplicably paid off in ridiculous ways. Dan Ryckert's history of unlikely events didn't start in 2009. They were happening for 25 years prior to that, and the details can be found in The Dumbest Kid in Gifted Class.

It's funny. It's dumb. It's Dan.
By Eduardo Paulo F. S. Costa
One of the biggest problems with autobiographical books is that the author's voice tends to change when moving from spoken to written word, regardless of the presence of a ghost writer. This makes the book feel artificial and detached from its subject matter, and the distance makes it hard to believe in or even empathize with the author.
I'm glad to say that is not a problem in "The Dumbest Kid in Gifted Class". I've been following Dan Ryckert's work for nearly six years now, and one of the things that amazes me the most is his ability to switch between two different voices: one that is thoughtful and smart; and another that is impulsive and really, really dumb. He is very good at channeling these two sides of his narrative and painting a picture of the situations portrayed in the book.
The book focuses on lesser known episodes of his life: tales from college, going to Catholic school, and pulling pranks are just some of the things you will find in it. Ryckert deliberately avoids topics that have been discussed in Game Informer's Replay and Super Replay shows, or Giant Bomb's Giant Bombcast, Danswers, and the podcasts with his dad Paul, although some inevitably find their way into the book. This is both good and bad: it gives his longtime fans new stories, but the lack of more of the old stories would have been helpful to readers who are not familiar with Ryckert's life. I know it is unlikely that people who do not know Ryckert will buy the book, but having more stories about how weird he is with food, the dynamics between him and his dad, or the spontaneous one-liners and reactions of his grandpa Joe would have been very welcome.
Potential readers will also like to know that the book is laugh-out-loud funny, and everything you would expect from Ryckert. I would guess that even people who do not know him would find this entertaining and at least be curious enough to look up some of the content he has been featured on over the years.
All things considered, "Dumbest Kid" is a light, fun read, and I highly recommend it. The fact that the Kindle edition has slight formatting issues or that Ryckert's discourse at times seems a little too cruel when talking about perfectly innocent people are certainly bummers and distractions, but they do not mar the amount of fun and enjoyment the reader gets from the book. Fans of Dan Ryckert should definitely buy this book, as it is the closest thing to everything you wanted to read from him since "Anxiety as an Ally". People who have no idea who he is are going to like it, too, but will feel a little lost without a good introduction to his character and circumstances.
TL; DR: Dan Ryckert is the Jesus of dumb. Buy this book. Read this book. It's funny.

Way too relatable
By Jake Ditton
As someone who was 6 years behind Dan Ryckert at the same town (Olathe South though not East for high school), same interests, same love of videogames, same love of movies, I've never read something so relatable. Reading a book set in my hometown is something special because no one writes books about suburban Kansas towns. Written very similar to his podcast discussion Dan weaves tales of his life that if you didn't know who the guy was, just simply all seems untrue. But for listening to Dan’s wild stories from his podcasts, there was nothing else I could do, but believe him.
As someone that also struggled with talking with girls, much of Dan's stories mirrored if not mimicked my own experiences. Dan's attempts to talk to girls not only made me cringe with laughter, but forced me to relive my own social inadequacies from the same awkward JR High time period. Thanks for making me remember those experiences. I’m going to go cry myself to sleep now.
If you're a fan of Dan or just enjoy stories that seem just a touch unbelievable, take a look here.

Maybe you will understand why I recommend this book so strongly
By Amazon Customer
I don't have any interest in pro-wrestling. I never watched The Rock or Hulk Hogan, I don't understand the difference between the WCW and the WWE, and I certainly don't understand any of the storylines (past or present). So when I say that a story about Dan's experience seeing a Wrestling PPV event in person really got to my core... Maybe you will understand why I recommend this book so strongly. There are stories of his horrendous misunderstanding of what "pranking" entails, his formative time working at a movie theater, and numerous others that are fascinating for various reasons. At times, I found myself nodding along to his inner workings, thinking "yep, this is what I would have done..." and at others - "Sweet JESUS, this guy is nuts!" within the space of just a few paragraphs. Ryckert has a writing style that equates to a campfire storyteller, under the influence of a six pack (or two). This book is not going to change your life, but it will absolutely make you laugh. What a worthwhile purchase.
