The Dumbest Kid in Gifted Class, by Dan Ryckert

Since 2009, Dan Ryckert's life has been well documented. Whether through his writing, live appearances, tweets, or thousands of hours of videos and podcasts, his work has been seen by many. He's set two Guinness World Records, earned the ire of legendary baseball players, penned two novels about an alligator fighter pilot, raised thousands for charity via custom Super Mario Bros. levels, and works a side job as a professional wrestling manager. These are the stories that people already know.
Before jumping headfirst into the public eye, Ryckert's history was just as unique. He's been a Catholic schoolboy and an insufferable movie theater employee. He's befriended the insane and almost been stabbed. Time and time again, he's taken long shots that have inexplicably paid off in ridiculous ways. Dan Ryckert's history of unlikely events didn't start in 2009. They were happening for 25 years prior to that, and the details can be found in The Dumbest Kid in Gifted Class.

It's funny. It's dumb. It's Dan.
By Eduardo Paulo F. S. Costa
One of the biggest problems with autobiographical books is that the author's voice tends to change when moving from spoken to written word, regardless of the presence of a ghost writer. This makes the book feel artificial and detached from its subject matter, and the distance makes it hard to believe in or even empathize with the author.
I'm glad to say that is not a problem in "The Dumbest Kid in Gifted Class". I've been following Dan Ryckert's work for nearly six years now, and one of the things that amazes me the most is his ability to switch between two different voices: one that is thoughtful and smart; and another that is impulsive and really, really dumb. He is very good at channeling these two sides of his narrative and painting a picture of the situations portrayed in the book.
The book focuses on lesser known episodes of his life: tales from college, going to Catholic school, and pulling pranks are just some of the things you will find in it. Ryckert deliberately avoids topics that have been discussed in Game Informer's Replay and Super Replay shows, or Giant Bomb's Giant Bombcast, Danswers, and the podcasts with his dad Paul, although some inevitably find their way into the book. This is both good and bad: it gives his longtime fans new stories, but the lack of more of the old stories would have been helpful to readers who are not familiar with Ryckert's life. I know it is unlikely that people who do not know Ryckert will buy the book, but having more stories about how weird he is with food, the dynamics between him and his dad, or the spontaneous one-liners and reactions of his grandpa Joe would have been very welcome.
Potential readers will also like to know that the book is laugh-out-loud funny, and everything you would expect from Ryckert. I would guess that even people who do not know him would find this entertaining and at least be curious enough to look up some of the content he has been featured on over the years.
All things considered, "Dumbest Kid" is a light, fun read, and I highly recommend it. The fact that the Kindle edition has slight formatting issues or that Ryckert's discourse at times seems a little too cruel when talking about perfectly innocent people are certainly bummers and distractions, but they do not mar the amount of fun and enjoyment the reader gets from the book. Fans of Dan Ryckert should definitely buy this book, as it is the closest thing to everything you wanted to read from him since "Anxiety as an Ally". People who have no idea who he is are going to like it, too, but will feel a little lost without a good introduction to his character and circumstances.

TL; DR: Dan Ryckert is the Jesus of dumb. Buy this book. Read this book. It's funny.

Way too relatable
By Jake Ditton
As someone who was 6 years behind Dan Ryckert at the same town (Olathe South though not East for high school), same interests, same love of videogames, same love of movies, I've never read something so relatable. Reading a book set in my hometown is something special because no one writes books about suburban Kansas towns. Written very similar to his podcast discussion Dan weaves tales of his life that if you didn't know who the guy was, just simply all seems untrue. But for listening to Dan’s wild stories from his podcasts, there was nothing else I could do, but believe him.

As someone that also struggled with talking with girls, much of Dan's stories mirrored if not mimicked my own experiences. Dan's attempts to talk to girls not only made me cringe with laughter, but forced me to relive my own social inadequacies from the same awkward JR High time period. Thanks for making me remember those experiences. I’m going to go cry myself to sleep now.

If you're a fan of Dan or just enjoy stories that seem just a touch unbelievable, take a look here.

Maybe you will understand why I recommend this book so strongly
By Amazon Customer
I don't have any interest in pro-wrestling. I never watched The Rock or Hulk Hogan, I don't understand the difference between the WCW and the WWE, and I certainly don't understand any of the storylines (past or present). So when I say that a story about Dan's experience seeing a Wrestling PPV event in person really got to my core... Maybe you will understand why I recommend this book so strongly. There are stories of his horrendous misunderstanding of what "pranking" entails, his formative time working at a movie theater, and numerous others that are fascinating for various reasons. At times, I found myself nodding along to his inner workings, thinking "yep, this is what I would have done..." and at others - "Sweet JESUS, this guy is nuts!" within the space of just a few paragraphs. Ryckert has a writing style that equates to a campfire storyteller, under the influence of a six pack (or two). This book is not going to change your life, but it will absolutely make you laugh. What a worthwhile purchase.

Amazon.com Review
Penzler Pick, June 2001: This is Daniel Woodrell's third book set in the Ozarks and, like the other two, Give Us a Kiss and Tomato Red, it peels back the layers from lives already made bare by poverty and petty crime, exposing the reader to the raw everyday hopes and fears of the poor and the helpless.

Told through the voice of an overweight 13-year-old boy named Shuggy Atkins, this is the story of Shug; the one person who loves him, his mother Glenda; and her boyfriend Red, a brutal and ignorant man. Red hates Shug but uses him to break into houses to steal drugs and anything else that can be sold. Glenda makes a meager living looking after the local cemetery and spends her time trying to keep Red amused and away from Shug, whom he loves to humiliate but whom she adores. Glenda is Shug's only champion. She calls him Sweet Mister as she continually boosts his confidence and promises a better life for him, if not for herself.

But when Glenda sees a beautiful, green Thunderbird with leather seats and its driver, Jimmy Vin Pearce, a chain of events is set into motion that will end in violence and bloodshed. Glenda must keep hidden from Red her infatuation with Jimmy Vin's money and fine clothes while she and Shug dream separate dreams of making a new life away from the violence.

Woodrell writes books that are small in volume but large in scope. It is impossible to put down this story of less than 200 pages until the final tragedy unfolds. --Otto Penzler

From Publishers Weekly
Woodrell (Tomato Red) excels at depicting the seedy side of Southern living, and in this brooding coming-of-age tale he revisits the hardscrabble Ozarks town of West Table, Mo., his dark, insistently realist prose packing a visceral punch. Overweight 13-year-old Shuggie Atkins, sharp and cynical for his age, lives in a ramshackle house situated in a "bone yard" with his perpetually drunk and dreamy mother, Glenda, and his savage stepfather, Red. Despite Red's hot temper, Glenda's tendency to behave foolishly and Shuggie's frustrations, their lives settle into a rough-hewn rhythm: Red comes and goes as he pleases; Shuggie tends to the graveyard grass and helps Red steal painkillers from helpless cancer patients; and Glenda sips her "tea" cocktails and flirts with Shuggie. Then balding but classy Jimmy Vin Pearce roars into their lives in a shiny green T-bird and begins an affair with Glenda. Overcome by jealousy, Shuggie must decide should he betray his mother or grant her happiness? Woodrell displays his characters in an unforgiving light, never succumbing to the urge to romanticize them. Through unsparing prose and deft characterization, he conveys the harsh philosophy best summed up in one of Glenda's rare bits of motherly advice: "You wake up in this here world, my sweet li'l mister, you got to wake up tough. You go out that front door tough of a mornin' and stay tough 'til lights out have you learned that?" Woodrell's merciless realism is shot through with humor and rural wisdom; his work may not be to everyone's taste, but his bleak world is rendered with consummate artistry. (May 21)Forecast: Woodrell is a cult figure in England and elsewhere in Europe, where he was on the short list for the 2000 Dublin International Literary Award. Count on good reviews of this novel to raise his profile here.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-Shuggie Akins, an awkward 13-year-old, lives with his mother and Red in a caretaker's house on graveyard grounds. Red's been married to Glenda since Shug was born, but it's uneasily, tacitly understood that he is not the boy's biological father. A small-time crook, the physically and verbally abusive man steals everything from televisions to shipments of silk blouses. For recreation, he forces Shug to creep into the houses of terminally ill people and rob them of their prescription drugs. At one point, Shug witnesses the funeral of a small boy, one of the victims of Red's thieving. One night, Red gambles away Glenda's stolen silk blouse and demands that she remove it in front of Shug and the winner of the bet. Glenda seems to dote on her son, but never enough, of course, to remove them from the situation. She calls him her "sweet mister"-sort of a cross between the clich‚s of a "true gentleman" and a "knight in shining armor." She's physically affectionate with him, and her behavior infuses Shug with a kind of seething, uncomfortable lust. While his relationship with Red is openly brutal, it is the relationship with his mother that is the more dangerous and fascinating. Woodrell is an absolute master at building tension in relaxed prose, and the novel has a haunting and wonderful force. Events churn to a head when Glenda meets a slick, citified man with a shiny Thunderbird, and decides to leave Red-and Shug-for the promises he offers. Sweet mister's death, for the record, is a figurative one, yet it feels more tragic than a literal one.

Chilling
By Colin Paterson
Having read and admired several of Daniel Woodrell's books, I was very pleased to see that this one had been released.
As with the previous "Tomato Red", this one is well-written and wondrous in the simple, unadorned tone of the narration. However both of these books are difficult to gush over.
These are dark gems. And they lack the allure that the common reader expects.
When we are moved to feel joy or sorrow by an author, we have no trouble considering that genius is involved. With Woodrell though, the emotions are more complex. And he can stir up things which we might prefer to have left hidden and forgotten.
This is definitely genius. Especially when someone such as Woodrell accomplishes this with a subtlety that is remarkably profound.
In this book, we are given the sad story of thirteen-year-old, overweight Shug Atkins. His is about the furthest thing from an "aw shucks" coming-of-age tale you can get.
Shug and his mother Glenda live in a shack on the grounds of the cemetery they maintain. Here they are plagued by the abusive Red. Red may or may not be Shug's biological father -- he probably isn't but this has never been made clear to Shug. Despite that, Red acts the father role and displays some of the most despicable ways possible for a grown man -- he is definitely an inappropriate role model.
Glenda has always relied on her looks even though they haven't gotten her very far. She's about little more than sex and as age advances has little in her life but maintaining an anaesthetic level of drunkenness. Far from being a perfect mother, she is still Shug's most likely ally -- a relationship that has all the possibilities for the perverse one can imagine.
Shug's world is full of dysfunction. He has been exposed to drug and alcohol abuse, hardened criminality, illicit sexual behavior and all manner of wickedness. But he doesn't know any better. And in the course of this novel, things go from bad to worse. In the end, the situation is beyond help.
Where "Tomato Red" impressed me with a story of what tragedy might happen when people fail to follow society's norms, this book shows what happens to people who live by the norms and meet tragedy by tangling with people who do not play by those rules.
I felt stunned after reading this book. Honestly. I sat and thought about it and couldn't shake it. It was like having heard a bomb go off nearby -- too close to feel secure.
This is certainly a remarkable book.

Down He Forgot As Up He Grew
By sweetmolly
Have you ever truly, physically "ached" with pity? When I closed "Death of Sweet Mister," I shut my eyes and hoped to forget Shugg Akins, but knew I never would. I just sat there dry-eyed and hollow. This is quite a testament to author Daniel Woodrell's skill, but at a price I'm not certain I wanted to pay.
Shugg aka "Morris" aka Sweet Mister is fat and thirteen, a bit of an outcast with his peers (because he's fat? poor? at the bottom of the poor white trash social scale? -- we don't know.) Shugg, our narrator is bright, quick, and a pragmatist through and through. He goes along to get along. His only champion is his mother Glenda, a pretty lady whose looks didn't get her very far, whose only weapons are persistent sensuousness and an ever-present silver thermos containing rum-laced "tea." Shugg's nominal father (probably not) is Red Akins, a cruel, brutal, truly evil man whose purpose in life is drinking, drugging and make certain Shugg and Glenda's lives were spent in abject humiliation. Red is not smart, but he is a shrewd and cunning, formidable foe. "Foe" is the wrong word for Red; you'd no more oppose him than an evil force of nature. I once read of an Australian Wandering Spider, one of the most venomous spiders in the world who is so aggressive that if you try to kill him, say with a broom, he climbs right up the broom handle and goes after you, and isn't satisfied with one bite--he keeps on biting till he's through. Red is a subhuman Wandering Spider.
Red and his pal Basil drag Shugg with them to steal drugs from terminally ill people and doctors' offices, the theory being if Shugg gets caught, as a juvenile, he will only be reprimanded. Shugg complies in his sheer terror of Red, and descriptions of this overweight, clumsy boy trying to be a second story man are both pathetic and ironically funny. What Shugg lacks in physical aptitude, he makes up for in clever quick wittedness far beyond anything Red would understand.
When Glenda has a torrid affair with a man who has a green T-Bird, the inexorable tragedy must play itself out. Everyone is in place: murderous Red, loyal Basil, and Shugg who has been taught to love his mother too much and knows he has not a song, but a scream, in his heart. Glenda's Sweet Mister is gone.
Woodrell is powerful, concise and unsparing. "Death of Sweet Mister'" is compelling, well-written, but not for everyone. With a tragedy, there are no alternate endings.

of incest. I knew he'd finally get to it and wow!- he does it with such smooth and seamless prose and just the right amount of tension that he rivals James M. Caine's renderings on such a shadowy subject. As with previous works, Woodrell proves he's a writer's writer with this dark portrait (reminds one of Faulkner's Sanctuary) of southern culture on the skids. Woodrell's style is so economical and subtle that the tension build-up throughout the novel doesn't hit until the final scenes and then it hits you right between the eyes, sharp and swift, like you're a frog being gigged by some redneck, hillbilly swilling cheap beer and looking for trouble beneath a pale moon.

An Introduction to Numerical Methods: A MATLAB Approach, Third Edition, by Abdelwahab Kharab, Ronald B. Guenther

Highly recommended by CHOICE, previous editions of this popular textbook offered an accessible and practical introduction to numerical analysis. An Introduction to Numerical Methods: A MATLAB Approach, Third Edition continues to present a wide range of useful and important algorithms for scientific and engineering applications. The authors use MATLAB to illustrate each numerical method, providing full details of the computer results so that the main steps are easily visualized and interpreted.

New to the Third Edition

  • A chapter on the numerical solution of integral equations
  • A section on nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) in the last chapter
  • Inclusion of MATLAB GUIs throughout the text

The book begins with simple theoretical and computational topics, including computer floating point arithmetic, errors, interval arithmetic, and the root of equations. After presenting direct and iterative methods for solving systems of linear equations, the authors discuss interpolation, spline functions, concepts of least-squares data fitting, and numerical optimization. They then focus on numerical differentiation and efficient integration techniques as well as a variety of numerical techniques for solving linear integral equations, ordinary differential equations, and boundary-value problems. The book concludes with numerical techniques for computing the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a matrix and for solving PDEs.

CD-ROM Resource
The accompanying CD-ROM contains simple MATLAB functions that help students understand how the methods work. These functions provide a clear, step-by-step explanation of the mechanism behind the algorithm of each numerical method and guide students through the calculations necessary to understand the algorithm.

Written in an easy-to-follow, simple style, this text improves students’ ability to master the theoretical and practical elements of the methods. Through this book, they will be able to solve many numerical problems using MATLAB.

A good text to start with.
By Andrew
The book provides a solid start for Numerical Methods, especially for those learning Matlab while having their first introductory course in Numerical Methods.

My recommendation is to read through the chapter and play with the code(the book comes with a CD with all m-files used in the book on it). If you are just learning Matlab, try changing the code to do different things and see what happens. Create an m-file or two that checks the slope across the curve created and plot a few of the arrays in the text.

The worst thing you can do with this book is try and avoid the code, even if Matlab is new and frustrating. The introductions are rather theoretical (especially for the Junior level undergraduate who is just entering or who hasn't had proofs), but if you work at it the text will make sense.

I give it four stars for the somewhat theoretical introductions, but this was my first real introduction to Matlab and Numerical Methods. I can say after working through the book it prepares you well for future mathematical work and a background in Matlab makes it easy crossover to Maple or pick up c/c++.

It's a very good book, but the code they use is very advanced programming, when the same code to complete the calculations can be written much simpler, and easier to understand.
Overall awesome book for understanding the principles but don't expect to learn matlab from it.

There are just too many typing errors which can be extremely annoying. You try to follow examples and keep getting the wrong answer only to find one of the plus signs is a minus sign and then when you look at the selected answers to see if you are doing it right it might be showing you "the solution for number 4" but you come to realize nope its actually the solution for number 5. It is a terrible textbook in my opinion.

God's Rule - Government and Islam: Six Centuries of Medieval Islamic Political Thought, by Patricia Crone

Patricia Crone's God's Rule is a fundamental reconstruction and analysis of Islamic political thought focusing on its intellectual development during the six centuries from the rise of Islam to the Mongol invasions. Based on a wide variety of primary sources―including some not previously considered from the point of view of political thought―this is the first book to examine the medieval Muslim answers to questions crucial to any Western understanding of Middle Eastern politics today, such as why states are necessary, what functions they are meant to fulfill, and whether or why they must be based on religious law.

The character of Muslim political thought differs fundamentally from its counterpart in the West. The Christian West started with the conviction that truth (both cognitive and moral) and political power belonged to separate spheres. Ultimately, both power and truth originated with God, but they had distinct historical trajectories and regulated different aspects of life. The Muslims started with the opposite conviction: truth and power appeared at the same time in history and regulated the same aspects of life. In medieval Europe, the disagreement over the relationship between religious authority and political power took the form of a protracted controversy regarding the roles of church and state. In the medieval Middle East, religious authority and political power were embedded in a single, divinely sanctioned Islamic community―a congregation and state made one. The disagreement, therefore, took the form of a protracted controversy over the nature and function of the leadership of Islam itself. Crone makes Islamic political thought accessible by relating it to the contexts in which it was formulated, analyzing it in terms familiar to today's reader, and, where possible, comparing it with medieval European and modern political thought. By examining the ideological point of departure for medieval Islamic political thought, Crone provides an invaluable foundation for a better understanding of contemporary Middle Eastern politics and current world events.

This rich and wide-ranging book... is stimulating and provocative... [Crone's] lucid style aims to make a complex, ostensibly alien, tradition intelligible to the general reader as well as to the Islamic specialist.

(Times Literary Supplement)

The book is a masterpiece on the history of the tension existing between religion and politics.

(Peter von Sivers Middle East Journal)

The author, a distinguished Islamic scholar, cuts through a welter of misconceptions.

(Robert Lebling Saudi Aramco World)

Patricia Crone gracefully covers the first six centuries of Islamic political thought.

(Zouhair Ghazzal Historian)

Students today... will benefit greatly from this welcome study of early Islamic political thought.

(Ronald J. Stansbury Christian Scolar's Review)

Review

The book combines erudition with analytical brilliance. The author knows how to make sense of things, highlight them, and put them in perspective. Readers should come away with a satisfying depth of understanding of the full range of medieval Islamic political thought.

(Michael Cook, Princeton University)

Bringing Clarity to a Murky Topic
By Robert Lebling
Middle Eastern governments are getting plenty of scrutiny in the West these days. Think tanks, journalists and other analysts are devoting much time and attention to forecasting the future shape of political institutions throughout the Arab and Islamic worlds.

But how can we understand where these institutions are going if we don't know how they developed? For the average Westerner, the history and theory of Islamic government remain shrouded in polemic, propaganda and cultural mythology.

The author, a distinguished Islamic scholar known for straight talk and surprising insights, cuts through the welter of misconceptions and describes the birth and evolution of government in the Islamic Middle East. Writing unpretentiously, making connections to modern-day life, Crone explores how rival versions of the Islamic community or umma developed over time, and how the nature and role of the caliphate changed through history.

She explains the influence of Persian and Greek political thought on Islamic government and on the great Islamic thinkers, like al-Farabi and Ibn Rushd. She shares perceptive insights on the role of religion in government.

While the Christian concept separates religion and state (i.e., God and Caesar), in the Muslim tradition "the umma was a congregation and a state rolled into one." Crone recognizes the difficulties modern Muslims face in dealing with the secularization issue - a problem she says will remain contentious for a long time to come.

Excellent showcase of immense mutability
By SeanG
This is a great treatment of Islamic political thought from the founding of Islam to the end of the medieval period. It is written with the standards of professional scholarship, with extensive documentation and references, and some interesting nuggets and arguments in the notes. However, I doubt this would limit the interest for a general audience, as the markings of scholarship are pretty unobtrusive.

Of course, one of the main reasons a general readership would care is to get some context and underpinnings for the political relationships that Westerners are becoming more and more interested in. _God's Rule_ does serve that purpose well. It also shows the dizzying variation in the political thought of various branches and sects of Islam. For theories of the obligations of the state; the proper legitimation of rulers; the relationship between state, society, and religion; the role of "civil disobedience" (to use an anachronistic term); the state and warfare; etc., Crone shows that Islam is incredibly mutable. That in itself is a valuable insight, as we think today about the possibilities for institutional change from autocracy in the Islamic world and the political arrangements that do exist.

Of course, the book is not written with an eye to current events, and it is also excellent as a treatment of the history of political thought in its own right. The time period covered includes an era in which an Islamic empire was the ascendant political unit in the world. More generally this is a large and politically important region of the world at the time. For these reasons its political thought compels our interest.

One minor complaint: I wish Crone had given more emphasis to the size of the various Islamic sects she surveys. Sometimes it is easy to forget that some of the individual communities covered were very small.

This would not make such a good introduction to the history of the Islamic world in general. _History of Islamic Societies_ by Ira Lapidus is a good place for something like that. But it would probably make an excellent 2nd or 3rd book for someone interested in Islamic history.

The book reveals what is really required to teach English in Italy: how to find employment, how to get a work visa, how to negotiate the government bureaucracy, and what to expect in your daily teaching environment. Teaching English to foreigners is not easy, and the author makes sure you know what you're getting yourself into before you pack your suitcase.

I also corresponded with the author by email and he took a personal interest in trying to help me find a job and also put me in contact with other teachers in Rome so that I could learn from their experiences. Well worth the price, even in hardcover, although the eBook is cheaper.

I have recommended this book to all the students on my TEFL course.

Book too Expensive for the Information
By Angela Montano
I have purchased other books on the same topic. Although this book was much more expensive than the others, I decided to purchase anyway because after reading the reviews, I thought it was going to offer new, helpful information. Well, for the extra $25-30 cost, it really doesn't. I did not find any additional information to make the book worth the $50 cost. I am disappointed.

Designed as a practical desktop reference, this official publication of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis is the largest collection of hypnotic suggestions and metaphors ever compiled. It provides a look at what experienced clinicians actually say to their patients during hypnotic work.

A book to be savored and referred to time and again, this handbook will become a dog-eared resource for the clinician using hypnosis.

Good as a Secondary Resource
By Charlie
The Handbook of Hypnotic Suggestions and Metaphors seems to be on the shelves of many aspiring and accomplished hypnotherapists. I have read almost all of it, utilized some of the methods, and have spoken with many hypnotherapists who have read and used it. The general consensus is that the book provides some good ideas, some very good ideas, some mediocre ideas and a few worthless ones. I have certainly expanded my methods from using it. For people who already know hypnosis, this book is useful as an adjunct. I provides many approaches and scripts, but I have found that all need to be adapted based on the client, the hypnotherapist and the context. This means you need to know how to adapt them, and this "how" is beyond the scope of the Handbook. However, the Handbook does not promise to teach people how to modify scripts and methods, so that is not a shortcoming of the book. If someone wants to know more about the art of hypnosis and how to adapt various materials, you need to read a book or take a class which is specifically about that.

The biggest strength of the Handbook is that it provides a large amount of material and covers many types of application. The biggest weakness is that several of the scripts include language that violates some of the rules of suggestion. For example, there are several suggestions that are given in the negative, such as "do not think of orange..." This kind of mistake is only a problem for people who have limited training in hypnosis. People with proper training read these mistakes, note them and correct the script. People with limited hypnosis training do not recognize many of the mistakes and will use scripts with mistakes. I suspect that such mistakes occur because many of the chapters were written a long time ago and/or because the authors trained differently. While the Handbook has some shortcomings, they probably do not cause many problems because many people will still benefit from scripts which are imperfect. Hypnosis is a powerful approach and most of the time it takes more than a few "nots" to mess a session up.

The Handbook is a good secondary resource for approaches to and scripts for hypnosis. Most people I know refer to the Handbook when they working with a new type of problem (e.g. bed wetting) in order to get some general ideas about how to work with the problem. So, as a secondary reference, it gets FOUR STARS. I give only THREE STARS over all because I think too many people rely on it as a primary source of information, rather than as an ancillary reference.

Essential text for the hypnotherapist
By RCKJ
Corey Hammond has artfully combined the works of skilled hypnotherapists into a comprehensive text which details the many uses and techniques of hypnotherapy. Fondly called by myself and my colleagues, "The Big Red Book", it remains one of the few texts I refer to on a daily basis. It stimulates my own creativity as a clinician and provides thought-provoking and incredibly useful solutions to difficult clinical problems. I recommend this work highly.

Business is Beautiful: The Hard Art of Standing Apart, by Jean-Batiste Danet, Nick Liddell, Lynne Dobney, Dorothy MacKenzie, Tony Allen

Accepted wisdom tells us that business should come before pleasure, or that the two should never be mixed. Business, it seems, was never intended to be pleasurable. During an economic crisis, in particular, business is easy to portray as a cold, unforgiving environment. But business isn’t like that. Business is people—people who come together to achieve more than is possible individually. Achievement is easily measured through profit, but value is a much bigger concept. Beyond profit, businesses have the ability to make valuable contributions to society. A man in Denmark has turned his love and compassion for his deaf wife into a business that helps millions, as well as makes millions. A doctor has set up a new model hospital to provide affordable healthcare in India. Business provides countless examples of companies that have achieved greatness; companies for whom profit is necessary but not a sufficient condition for success. These stories and the business lessons (often immeasurable) they provide are brilliantly captured in this highly original book.

Business as art rather than science
By Jonathan Gifford
The central argument of Business is Beautiful is the heretical idea that perhaps we have reached the end of the line with the approach to business dictated by the dreary methodology of management science. `We've dissected the subject of business to death with the cold, dispassionate scalpel of statistical analysis,' argue the authors.

Businesses seek to inspire emotions in us: joy, surprise and desire, for example. The businesses that fail to inspire us in this way will fail. Successful businesses engage us in an emotional, rather than in a rational, way. Apple never said that its computers were better than other computers because of any particular feature or benefit; they said `Think different' and, `The people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones who do,' and they left it to us to decide if this was the kind of company that we would like to do business with.

Management scientists will no doubt attempt to analyse emotional intangibles, and are probably busy inventing measures that will help them to quantify `joy' and `desire'. We could continue to invest more money and to develop ever more complex technologies in the search for the elusive, scientifically-proven route to business success. Or, as Business is Beautiful refreshingly suggests, we could admit that there are `intangible drivers of commercial success that defy measurement.'

Just as art and science are not entirely incompatible, the authors argue, so neither are business and human interests. `If you don't take your business personally, then each day you come into work you will die a little. You must bring yourself into work.' Business, the book is arguing (and as you may well guess), is (or could be) beautiful.

The authors identify five qualities that they believe are exhibited by successful businesses, and argue that these are not `measurable' in the usual sense: Integrity, Curiosity, Elegance, Craft and Prosperity.

It's a good list. We may have other qualities that we would add; the core point is that these are not `metrics'. There is no system that can be followed that will deliver elegance, or craft or - by implication - prosperity, by which the authors mean a general prosperity of the whole community, rather than the enrichment of a few directors and shareholders.

The book goes on to illustrate this general philosophy and these specific business qualities via interviews with executives and founders from an impressive selection of businesses - many familiar: 3M; Conde Nast; Arup; BMW - and some less well known (at least to me): the Parisian electric car-sharing enterprise, Autolib'; the customer-obsessed Brazilian retail chain Pao de Azucar; Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospitals, who are developing a new business model for delivering affordable heart surgery in Asia and Africa.

Some of the quotes from the interviews with these companies' spokespersons could have used a little more editing, but it is never a bad thing to have verbatim quotes from successful businessmen and women, talking about why they believe their businesses are successful.

The book has the kind of production values that you would expect from a book that promotes elegance and craft.

A thoroughly enjoyable read and another step towards an intelligent, twenty-first century model for business.
