Absolutley amazing

Sophia has been away from home for a few years she has led a rather different life. Her parents were never really parents and a tragedy takes her way from the only home she has known for a few years. Upon her return to her home she finds out that many things have changed. Sophia has always had these terrible nightmares of things that go bump in the night how will she deal with the fact that they are real? How will she deal with the fact that everyone in her family seems to know things about what is going on but keeping secrets from her? Lucas has never met anyone like Sophia and is hell bent on having her for his own. Sophia and Lucas and the whole town of Sweetwater come together to try and stop a supernatural force that is trying to do some very bad things. Lucas and Sophia's relationship is very entreating to watch unfold and when it finally takes off watch out! This was a wonderful read I truly enjoyed it and cannot wait for the next book.

PHENOMENAL!!!!

I absolutely loved this story.Extremely intriguing..full of mystery and steamy scenes.Sofie moves back home after 2 yrs.Only to have the town she adores in turmoil. With the help of family and friends,they band together to put a stop to these issues. But as time moves forward Sofie comes to realize that supernatural beings are real.Help comes to their aide at several different angles..One is the hot irresistable badass Lucas Santiago.As their battle continues, things heat up between Sofie and Lucas..Rivi Jacks defintely kept me guessing...as questions got answered,many more popped up.This story sucked me in imediately. I anxiously look forward to book 2!!!

Whoa....What a RUSH!!

I read this book in kindle format. Other than the info the blurb gives, I had no idea what to expect. That is sometimes the fun of reading new authors. Oh my goodness, what a story this one is!

I will admit that it did take me a bit to adjust to the writing style used. Once that became easier I felt myself becoming engrossed in the tale. I feel like I came to know Sophie Reece very well, just like a sister or a close cousin. Her friend Emma Rae is a riot, everyone needs a pal like her! I found the Walker family to be very believable, it was fun getting to know them all. I could envision the environment, I felt their fears. It was refreshing to see an author give true 'courting' experiences to the leading lady! That Sophie is given time to search herself and know what she is looking for. Glad that she has standards for herself. When she encounters Lucas, I was thrilled for her! I kept thinking "Girl...what are you waiting for? Quit stalling!" I have never paid much attention when the bloggers ask 'Who is your fav book boyfriend?', now my answer would be Lucas Santiago!

Mostly what I appreciated as I read this, was that I constantly NEEDED to know more. This is a very involved story-line, there is just so much going on! Just the supernatural beings that are introduced, the WAY they are brought in to the tale...none of it is simple. I am grateful that it took time to get some of the answers, for the everyday details that helped create a more tangible world. It became a very...personal experience. This is in NO WAY a "wham-bam-thank you-ma'am" sort of book. One might say this book is one kick-butt fore-play session, with the main event still waiting behind the curtain.

That said, Rivi Jacks...I am eagerly waiting for book 2, like with the jitters and fidgety fingers... :)

One of the Best Books on Islam

(Caveat: This is a review of the 1995 publication. This 2004 one has additional notes on contemporary Islam. I think my review is still valid.) There are a lot of books out there on Islam and the number is growing. This book was published in 1995 (2004), before the great spike in Islamic and Arabic studies hit Universities all over. Having said that, there is something remarkable about how David Waines gives clearer insights on Islam than the more tailored works of the post-9/11 era.

Perhaps that is what makes this book one of the better introductions to Islam. Waines doesn't base Islam on the "five-pillars" which in reality are not theological pillars in Islam at all but just ethical pillars of obedience. Waines digs into Islamic theology, which is the best 'introduction' to Islam. Waines looks at the history of the schools of Islamic theology and explains well their origins.

If your understanding of Islam does not include what Ash'ari and Mu'tazilite doctrines are then you need to read a book on Islam that doesn't just introduce the practice but the teaching that then influences the practice. Waines is it. Even if scholars may not agree completely with Waines' take on all the elements he presents, the fact that he presented them all gives him great credit.

Waines doesn't leave Sufism and Shi'ism out to dry either like so many Islamic works focusing on what they consider the important 'orthodox' teachings. Sufism is very widespread. Shi'a Muslims make up over 10% of all Muslims. Waines allows an entire chapter to trace the beginnings of each branch touching not only on history but theology.

Lastly Waines takes the theological discourse and applies it to the 19th and 20th century in order to understand the reform movements in Islam. Even if Muslim theology was pretty well established in all schools by the 12th century A.D. there have still been movements within the streams that have influenced the modern practice of Islam.

At 280 pages this is well worth the read and takes the place of a dozen other books of fifty pages or less.

Probably the best introdcutory textbook

I have examined parts of all of the introductory textbooks on Islam. This one by David Waines remains among the best. Occasionally I teach about Islam. Therefore, I must review the introductory books every few years to see if I am still using the best book. In addition to being far more reasonably priced than other introductions, such as those by Frederick Denny and Daniel Brown, it is also sounder. David Waines does not feel a need to indulge in speculations regarding the "origins" of Islam, something that mars Denny's first chapter. Nor does Waines feel the need to defend any parts of Islam. He just tells it straight and this is a great relief.

Among the various chapters, Waines is strongest when it comes to theology. The chapter on Sufism may be the weakest part of the book. The chapter on Shiism is always something I feel needs to supplemented, since Waines does not fully explain the deep theological differences between Sunnism and Shiism. If you are looking for a text that gives an outline of history, this is not the best book. But really history is the easiest part to supplement. None of this is to denigrate the book. I would not even say that these are necessarily "weaknesses". They just happen to be the parts where Waines does not focus as much as other authors might.

For anyone who wants to get a first introduction to the general outline of Islamic teachings, this is an excellent place to begin. It is very good to complement it with something along the lines of S. H. Nasr's The Heart of Islam: Enduring Values for Humanity or Joseph Lumbard's Submission, Faith & Beauty: The Religion of Islam.

Introductory Primer to the History and Development of Islamic Theology

I do not have much to add in the way of substance to the excellent reviews by "C P Slayton" and "Basil." As they detailed, this book provides an academic introduction to Islam that focuses more on the history of Islamic thought than the traditional topics of a more conventional "political" history. A few chapters remain devoted to historical topics, such as the standard historical summary of Islamic origins, brief discussions of the three Islamic "Gunpowder Empires" (Safavids, Ottomans, and Mughals), and an illuminating chapter in the 2nd edition discussing modern developments, especially related to what is generally called radical Islam or Islamic fundamentalism. There is a chapter devoted to the Sufis and one to Shi'i Islam, but neither goes into great detail.

The reasons for the less than stellar three-star review are twofold: 1) Except for the final chapter on modern developments, I felt the treatment of the various topics was too cursory, especially the four Sunni schools of law and the Sufis. I recognize this criticism is perhaps unfounded as this book was likely intended for a college classroom setting which could necessitate less detail; 2) The latter half of the digital edition of the book has a surprising number of punctuation and spacing errors. There are missing commas and periods which make comprehension much more difficult. I had to give some sentences a more scrutinizing second look in order to determine where commas and periods belonged because otherwise the sentences made no sense. I normally overlook issues with digitizing a text, but there were too many to ignore in this book.

Overall, this is an adequate introduction to Islamic theology, but I would recommend one supplement their reading with more thorough works, if not choose a more thorough book from the outset.

Excellent Book on the cause of Diseases and Illnesses

I learned an interesting fact from Art Mathias...It says in Isaiah 53:5, 'By His stripes we are Healed.' Jesus Christ took 39 lashes (whippings) before going to the Cross of Calvary. According to the AMA (American Medical Association) there are 39 major diseases which all conditions stem from. Coincidence? I don't think so. This book is sure to open your mind about the root causes of illness and how to find the path of healing from God through specific prayers. However, it's important to have The Biblical Foundations of Freedom, to understand and use the prayers for healing, a must read!

Much needed information

I suppose most people will acknowledge that negative emotions affect physical health, but if they knew the scientific documentation for it, and learned how to deal with those emotions, the resultant healings of serious chronic diseases would lessen the burden on our medical services. In His Own Image gives that documentation, explains the hows and whys, and addresses specific diseases. It is not a difficult read, nor a difficult concept to understand. The book has a Biblical outlook which supports the theory.

What an Eye Opener of truth! Unforgiveness can cause many medical problems in our bodies!

This is really a break through to see that those negative emotions; bitterness, rejection, fear, unforgiveness, low self-esteem,
hate, being ashamed, etc., will build up in the body and cancer, heart problems, you name it will form in our bodies. Now those
kind of medical problems will get a person's attention. Think how much turmoil and pain could be avoided if we all just asked for
healing of those negative emotions and forgave that parent or family member. friends, etc., and we just asked God to remove
the memory from our minds. There's a connection of every medical problem to an negative stronghold that we haven't let go of
in our hearts. I got right to work and let go of rejection, bitterness, control, fear, unforgiveness. I feel so much lighter and no longer
weighed down. I highly recommend this book, in fact the other products that Art Mathias has written too!

Horatio Alger wrote wildly popular dime novels in the mid to late 1800s about poor boys making good. He escaped this life by joining the Navy at age 17. Within 5 years time he became an offi cer and aviator and went on to complete a 21 year Navy career. In time he obtained a university degree (with honors), the only member of his family to even attend college. Only 2 of the 10 children even graduated from high school, himself and a sister. "Join the Navy and see the world" the recruiting poster said, and see the world, he did. He has been on 6 continents and in over 40 countries. He was also on the front line of the Cold War from near its beginning to near its end, which included a year in Viet Nam as a helicopter pilot. As a helicopter pilot, he also helped retrieve the astronauts from the sea after their return to earth. With the same determination and grit that propelled him in his Navy career, he entered private business after retiring from the Navy, which has made him a wealthy man. This well written book should be an inspiration to anyone who enjoys a good rags to riches story.

"Puttin On Airs" has so many topics and themes that the reader will wonder if multiple authors cooperated to write this. However, there is only one author here, Ben Bradberry, a man deemed a maverick who made himself successful despite overwhelming odds against him. Here is the story of Bradberry's life, a man who came from the very bottom level of the socio-economic ladder as one of ten impoverished children from Louisiana. His story would end as a self-made multi-millionaire and seasoned world traveler. Yet "Puttin' On Airs" is much more than a rags to riches story. It is an in depth examination of what Bradberry witnessed during a twenty one year naval career at a time when the United States was deeply embroiled in the Cold War as well as the morass of Viet Nam. Great pains are taken by Bradberry to reveal his experiences there in the closing year of the war, an American endeavor he declares both disastrous and unnecessary. While the author felt it was a grave error for American involvement in S.E. Asia, he nevertheless volunteered out of both patriotism and to perform his duty as a professional officer. Ultimately, Bradberry's maverick spirit would shine forth and his fortunes would truly blossom in private industry. Today, in his seventies he is a successful business owner with no plans to retire. You will be treated to his rare insights about the Cold War, Viet Nam, Bradberry's thoughts on education in this country, race relations, divorce, politics, traveling, and most interestingly, an explanation as to why the history of the Nazi Third Reich and the Holocaust is erroneous with the German hierarchy wrongly being vilified.

Born to parents with extreme indigence in rural Louisiana, Ben Bradberry believes his father would tell him that even today he is still "puttin' on airs." Physically and emotionally abused, Bradberry and his nine siblings were constantly reminded by their semi-illiterate father to accept their destitute position in life, and any attempt to improve in any form would pretentiously be "puttin' on airs." By absorbing himself in reading any books he could get his hands on, diligently studying the bible and associating himself with anyone that could teach or assist him in breaking the mold, i.e. teachers and doctors, Bradberry would eventually go further in life than his wildest expectations. His big break which enabled all that followed was his 1955 enlistment in the U.S. Navy, which he expressed was a welcome escape from a dead end existence which he was not the least reluctant to leave behind. The same maverick tendencies that led him to the top rungs of personal income in the private world were the same traits that got him in trouble several times over in the Navy. Before Viet Nam, Bradberry would take part as an instructor pilot as well as a participant in operations to retrieve astronauts from the sea after their return from space.

Despite a dashing career as a helicopter aviator and officer, Bradberry would write criticizing letters to the naval higher ups of perceived wrongs he witnessed. Examples of which were the unreasonable Navy tactic of using nuclear depth charges against enemy submarines, the sadistic use of inhumane officers to administer Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape schools, and the questioning of bureaucratically inefficient and wasteful rules he witnessed while he ran the maintenance department of the Fleet Aviation Support Unit in Viet Nam. Bradberry arrived in Viet Nam in August of 1971 and was assigned to the Naval base at Binh Thuy in IV Corps. Long before he arrived there, Bradberry concluded that American involvement in Viet Nam was wrong and that the obsession with the spread of communism became almost religious in nature. Furthermore, the idea of stamping out communism all over the world was a tall order ultimately leading America into many ill-advised adventures, with Viet Nam being the most prominent and disastrous. Bradberry debunks the Domino Theory as fallacious logic, citing as proof the fact that ultimately South Viet Nam did become communist without any consequences to the United States whatsoever.

The author makes incisive comments on the brutality of Viet Nam with U.S. progress being measured in the absurd theory of "body counts," Agent Orange and the breakdown of discipline between blacks and whites. Also discussed was the failure to adhere to dress codes, smoking of marijuana and the practice of fragging overzealous commanders. Bradberry also comments on the corruptness he witnessed in Saigon, widespread prostitution and the fear of what would happen to the South Vietnamese who assisted the U.S. after the American departure. Bradberry summed up his Viet Nam experience there by asserting that not only did the practice of body counts encourage atrocities, but that to be a successful commander there was to check your critical thinking at the door when you came in. To be promoted in Viet Nam, Bradberry insisted one must do the job they were given and not ask too many questions which couldn't be answered. Between being in charge of FASU, flying non-combat missions for HAL-3 (Helicopter, Attack, Light) as well as being in charge of Binh Thuy base security, Bradberry mentioned the absurdity of this war in what he deemed "the Viet Nam merry-go-round." He explained this as follows; "At any given time here, a third of the troops are leaving the country, a third just arriving, and the other third are doing all the work. It's a hell of a war."

Aside from being the only member of his immediate family ever to attend college, he received his degree with honors. With a 21 year Naval career under his belt, Bradberry retired from the military to try his hand at private industry. His rise to fortune in the real estate and dental business is nothing less than meteoric. Richly detailed with photographs, "Puttin' On Airs" could almost be a traveler's guide, as Bradberry chronicles his journeys through 6 continents and over 40 countries. However, it isn't until the author visited the Concentration Camps in Eastern Europe as well as some of the destroyed German cities such as Dresden that he began formulating his theories on the Third Reich and World War II. While he wets the reader's appetite by offering the genesis of his opinions, Bradberry saves his conclusions in a second book entitled; "The Myth Of German Villainy." He also leaves readers with a sobering admonition; "In my lifetime, the U.S. has gone from being a Christian country of English speaking North Europeans with a predominant Anglo-Saxon culture to a polyglot country of babbling foreigners, most not white, with a variety of religious affiliations. The combination of Anglo-Saxon culture and free enterprise capitalism made this country great. Multi-culturalism and Marxist socialism will be its undoing." Jean Peeters is professor of linguistics and translation studies at University of South Brittany, France. He is particularly interested in questions of how foreignness manifests itself in translation, how it relates to social relations and how it is accommodated.
Jandhyala Prabhakara Rao is professor of linguistics at the University of Hyderabad, India. He is the Coordinator of the Centre for Study of Foreign Languages, School of Humanities. He has a keen interest in the relationships between language, society and culture.
