I agree this book is amazing.

In a poetic, yet detatched way, Maya Angelou captures the heart of her struggles growing up female and Black during the Depression. Her style and description draw in the reader and keep her spellbound even during the most painful scenes. You feel deeply for the author and her little brother as they drift through their lives living for a bit of affection. Neglected by their divorced parents, Maya and her brother get sent to Arkansas at ages 4 and 5 to live with their grandma and handicapped uncle. Although life is hard and love not demonstrated, Maya learns much from her grandma and uncle.
The theme of this book is the quest for the child to be loved by the adult. Maya feels inferior. She feels ugly and compares herself to her magical brother Bailey. Both children are starved for true affection and daydream a white movie actress on the screen is their long lost mother.
Maya and her brother are eventually united with "Mother Dear" in St.Louis when she is eight. Unfortunately Mother's boyfriend begins to abuse Maya(...). This is graphically portrayed in the book. Maya's feelings of not belonging and not being truly loved are compounded after the abuse.
I admire all the autobiographical books by Ms.Angelou. She has achieved a lot in her life for a person who started out in such a sad situation.
This book should be read and re-read.

Misleading Warnings

Going into my freshman year of high school and my first honors english class I was told by my church to beware of the evil book they would force me to read-- I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.

It was protested because of the vivid picture painted of her sexual abuse.

After reading it I can only shake my head at the people who warned me of this book. By refusing to read it because of something horrible happening to someone you fail to really realise that things of that nature happen.

Reading this book was an eyeopener to me-- to understand just where people like Maya come from. I was riveted throughout this book. Easily it is one of the better books I've read.

An adult review--and one teacher's viewpoint

May I tell you why I choose to have my ninth grade students read it? I have noticed a lot of reviews by young people, which I applaud, but an adult perspective might be helpful.
I don't particularly feel the need to defend its merits. (I am not articulate enough to do justice to that task.) As with any book, some will love it and some won't. Guaranteed, it will make you uncomfortable at times, because one chapter describes the rape of a young person--which is painful for any compassionate human being to hear. Plus, there are other sexual issues, largely stemming from the earlier assault, but also because she is a teenager in the last phase of the book. Such questions about love and sex are characteristic of the teenage years. Many young people, as well as adults, are confused about such topics. While these are generally the most controversial segments from the book, the fundamental lesson of the book goes far beyond the survival of one victim. I won't supply you with the answers as to what one should take away from the text. It is a personal experience for each of us.
We can all learn from Maya's honest account of her childhood journey. We can all try on her experiences and live vicariously through her for a while, and see how it changes our own perspective on what it means to be a human being.
I'll be the first to admit, this book is a challenge for all my students in one way or another. Some because they are white and live in the northern US. Some because they are male and it's difficult to view life through a woman's eyes. Some because of the adult vocabulary and extensive use of figurative language. Some of these experiences are so remote from their own, while others are very close to home. It helps them to see how much we actually do have in common with those who at first seem very different. They all can benefit from reading it, if they give it a chance. (Adults may be better equiped to appreciate fully this text. However, young people can take so much from it. Maybe one day, we can have an abridged version, so it is still rich in language and meaning, yet condensed so more young people can access its many gifts.)
Beyond the darkness of some of those experiences (discrimination, rape, humilation and fear) lies a powerful sense of hope, dignity, determination and resilience. One of my favorite aspects of the book is its emphasis on the power of education, language and literacy. Throughout Maya's life--books, poetry, impassioned voices have all inspired her. Her autobiography is a moving tribute to a literate way of life and an enduring legacy to that tradition.

Short and snappy as it is, Stephen King's On Writing really contains two books: a fondly sardonic autobiography and a tough-love lesson for aspiring novelists. The memoir is terrific stuff, a vivid description of how a writer grew out of a misbehaving kid. You're right there with the young author as he's tormented by poison ivy, gas-passing babysitters, uptight schoolmarms, and a laundry job nastier than Jack London's. It's a ripping yarn that casts a sharp light on his fiction. This was a child who dug Yvette Vickers from Attack of the Giant Leeches, not Sandra Dee. "I wanted monsters that ate whole cities, radioactive corpses that came out of the ocean and ate surfers, and girls in black bras who looked like trailer trash." But massive reading on all literary levels was a craving just as crucial, and soon King was the published author of "I Was a Teen-Age Graverobber." As a young adult raising a family in a trailer, King started a story inspired by his stint as a janitor cleaning a high-school girls locker room. He crumpled it up, but his writer wife retrieved it from the trash, and using her advice about the girl milieu and his own memories of two reviled teenage classmates who died young, he came up with Carrie. King gives us lots of revelations about his life and work. The kidnapper character in Misery, the mind-possessing monsters in The Tommyknockers, and the haunting of the blocked writer in The Shining symbolized his cocaine and booze addiction (overcome thanks to his wife's intervention, which he describes). "There's one novel, Cujo, that I barely remember writing."

King also evokes his college days and his recovery from the van crash that nearly killed him, but the focus is always on what it all means to the craft. He gives you a whole writer's "tool kit": a reading list, writing assignments, a corrected story, and nuts-and-bolts advice on dollars and cents, plot and character, the basic building block of the paragraph, and literary models. He shows what you can learn from H.P. Lovecraft's arcane vocabulary, Hemingway's leanness, Grisham's authenticity, Richard Dooling's artful obscenity, Jonathan Kellerman's sentence fragments. He explains why Hart's War is a great story marred by a tin ear for dialogue, and how Elmore Leonard's Be Cool could be the antidote.

As his diehard fans know, King is a member of a writers-only rock 'n' roll band (Amy Tan is also a member), and this recording starts off with a sampling of their music. It may sound unsettling to some, but King quickly puts listeners at ease with his confident, candid and breezy tone. Here, King tells the story of his childhood and early influences, describes his development as a writer, offers extensive advice on technique (read: write tight and no bullshit) and finally recounts his well-known experience of being hit by a drunk driver while walking on a country road in 1999 and the role that his work has played in his rehabilitation. While some of his guidance is not exactly revolutionary (he recommends The Elements of Style as a must-have reference), other revelations that vindicate authors of popular fiction, like himself, as writers, such as his preference for stressing character and situation over plot, are engrossing. He also offers plenty of commonsense advice on how to organize a workspace and structure one's day. While King's comical childhood anecdotes and sober reflections on his accident may be appreciated while driving to work or burning calories on a treadmill, the book's main exercise does not work as well in the audio format. King's strongest recommendation, after all, is that writers must be readers, and despite his adept performance, aspiring authors might find that they would absorb more by picking up the book. Adult/High School-By the time King was 14, the scads of rejection slips he'd accumu-lated grew too heavy for the nail in the wall on which they were mounted. He replaced the nail with a spike and went on writing. This straight-up book inspires without being corny, and teens suspicious of adult rhap-sodies to perseverance will let down their guard and be put at ease by the book's gritty conversational tone. The first 100 pages are pure memoir-paeans to the horror movies and fanzines that captivated King as a child, the expected doses of misadventure (weeks of detention for distributing his own satirical zine at school; building an electromagnet that took out the electricity of half a street), and hard times. King writes just as passion-ately in the second half of the book, where the talk turns to his craft. He provides plenty of samples of awkward or awful writing and contrasts them with polished versions. Aptly Titled

I enjoyed this book thoroughly, and took my time reading it. I could "hear" Mr. King's "voice" in my head as I read this on my iPad Kindle app. I felt like I was reading something from a friend---as if he had written a personal letter to me--- to give me an understanding of what he went through to become the person he is today. I think that his directives about the "how-to's" and "don't do's" were very practical. I breathed a sigh of relief when I got the feeling that writing classes and clubs are kind of a waste of time. Just write, is what I think he was telling me, I mean, his audience. I will probably read it again. What I got from his personal, real-life-lessons is this: Read a lot. Read good stuff. Write all the time. Find a place and write. Don't share your stuff unless you share it with someone you can trust. Go with your gut. Write all the time (I said that already because he said it or inferred it frequently). Don't use the same adjective over and over. Stick to the point. Don't over-do it on the descriptions. Let your audience see the movie you see in your head, because if you write it well, they will. I am glad this wasn't a "point by point HOW TO WRITE a story or a book" book, because really, writing isn't something you can do easily from a bulleted list. Writing is something you do from your heart, and you keep doing it until it's right and good. And then when that person you trust reads your stuff and offers some criticism, you can take it for what it's worth and use it or not.

The Grail Book

The Grail Book, it is that good. Let me start by saying I have read dozens of books "on writing" and they are all mostly the same. They talk about plotting your book, outlining it, which voice to use, first person, second person, etc. In essence they all talk about the mechanics of writing which is all fine and good if you are planning to write a "literary novel" which nobody will ever read and you will be lucky to make a single $100 bill out of. If you want to write mainstream popular fiction; however, (you know the kind that actually sells) then this book is for you.
King believes that book ideas are not plotted, rather they are found much like a lost relic or bone is found in the ground. He sometimes starts writing with no clue of the eventual ending of the story. The book literary makes itself. For example in the book Green Mile King was not sure whether the arrested criminal (who was actually innocent) would die or live in the end. The story or (fossil) literary wrote itself.
If you can have just one book on the craft of writing I recommend this book. It was the techniques in this book which led to the inspiration of my own book, "The Gambler," by Steven Black.

Stephen King Lives and Writes Through Situations

My primary writing project during the past year has been to write a memoir. Being new to the genre, I started by publishing my father’s memoir, enrolled in an online writing course, read numerous writing books, and reviewed a few good memoirs. Stephen King’s book, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft, touches on each of these activities.

The breadth of this memoir comes as a surprise—what is a memoir of a craft anyway? King divides his memoir into several parts, including:

• C.V. (17-101).
• What Writing Is (103-137).
• On Writing (141-249).
• On Living: A Postscript (253-270).
• And Furthermore, Part I: Door Shut, Door Open (271-284).
• And Furthermore, Part II: A Booklike (285-288).
• Further to Furthermore, Part III (289-291).

His chapters are preceded by three forewords and, in spite of its length, this memoir reads quickly—but not too quickly. Still, the breadth of this work comes from the way that King weaves his life and his craft together—a visitor to the King house might be advised to forbear exploring the closets! What the heck; let’s explore.

King is an author and a household name. He has written numerous (35+) books, many of which have also appeared in film. As an example, his breakout work, Carrie, sold first as a paperback novel (1973) and was released three years later as a horror film.

Interestingly, Tabitha, King’s wife, rescued an early manuscript of Carrie from the trash, as King recalls:

“I had four problems with what I’d written. First, … the story didn’t move me emotionally. Second, ... I didn’t much like the lead character. Carrie White seemed thick and passive, a ready-made victim. … Third, … [I] was not feeling at home with either the surroundings or my all-girl cast of supporting characters. … Fourth, … the story wouldn’t pay unless it was pretty long. … I couldn’t see wasting two weeks, maybe even a month, creating a novella I didn’t like and wouldn’t be able to sell. So I threw it away.” (76-77)

But, confronted with his Ideal Reader (Tabitha) telling him that this manuscript had promise, King went back and gave Carrie his best shot.

This notion of an Ideal Reader is interesting. King writes for his wife, Tabitha, who happens also to be an author, which seems most fortunate because she can articulate her opinions to King in actionable language. King explains:

“Call that one person you write for Ideal Reader. He or she is going to be in your writing room all the time: in the flesh once you open the door and let the world back in to shine on the bubble of your dream, in spirit during the sometimes troubling and often exhilarating days of the first draft, when the door is closed.” (219)

King sees the Ideal Reader as particularly helpful in judging story pace—“the speed at which your narrative unfolds”—and the details to include in your backstory—“all the stuff that happened before your tale began but which has an impact on the front story” (220-223).

Part of the back story in King’s memoir evolves into front story in his postscript where he describes in detail his experience of being run over by a Dodge van in June of 1999, while walking down a country road in rural Maine (253-255). This story of his near-death experience might have been just an interesting aside, except for the fact that King had motivational problems in finishing this memoir back in that summer (265). I suspect that his life story suddenly became a slightly higher priority, having been thrown 14 feet in the air (259) and improbably lived through the experience.

Before I wrap up this review, let me make one more observation. King has an interesting view of plot. He describes plot as too big a hammer (a jackhammer) for normal use by fiction author and he prefers to motivate his characters through stressful situations (164). If you believe that we act out of our identities, then no two characters will respond the same way to a given tricky situation. How a story evolves out of a situation is therefore interesting and potentially surprising because people discover the character in themselves as they are challenged by life’s situations—we are ultimately strangers to ourselves; that is, until we are not. The thrill in the thriller is therefore hard to duplicate with a plot-line where the author already knows where the story will go and how it will get there—it is better to scrape the plot and discover the character the same way that a reader might. Therefore, King looks for strong situations and explores interesting what-if scenarios to challenge his characters and writes intuitively about how they respond (169).

Stephen King’s memoir, On Writing, is an interesting and helpful book for wannabe and experienced authors both, because he explores both writing and the writing life. Film buffs might also read this book to garner the backstory on his films, many of which are now cult classics. Personally, I read this book mostly because I like to read and love to write—perhaps, you do too.

It's a good book. I have a 502 in the mid-year Corvette I bought and I don't intend to rebuild the engine, but this book answered a lot of questions I had about the design and history of this motor. It also had some good information on how to care for and keep that motor running right.

Just a tech manual but he covers all the stuff you need to know that isn't in a regular shop manual. Things like where to put extra sealant. All the differences between the different Engines. Very detailed pics. Some are so close up you have to take a second to figure it out and get oriented. Also has a lot of very useful appendixes. well worth the money.

Give this a try even if you hated book 3.

I see a lot of down voting of this volume due to book 3 which I think is unfair. The first two books were awesome, while book 3 was... not. Book 4 goes back to the feeling of the first two books and seems to be much better written and plotted out.

-Spoilers-

The only reason I don't rate this as 5 stars is the edit hammer being too common. The author goes and explains away things that happened in book two and undoes basically everything that people had issues with. I may be mistaken and this was his intent all along, but all I can say is this is my perception of the matter. I would have been much happier with a rewrite of volume 3 that led into this volume.

Much better then 3r'd book, in fact its almost as good as First 2 books.

Some area's which could do improvement:
1. Final battle was very "unsatisfying". Compared to MC's Epicness in 1st 2 books, here even after learning 1000+ year magic, his attacks are simple to mild. You need to put better creativity here.
2. I just couldn't feel the complexity and aliveness of Ironsoul. Its like it was a cardboard set-up. The battle description was too mild and 1 Dimensional, so they just didn't feel real. I remember reading "Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time with its super descriptive battle scene's which depict the Epicness/reality of the war. Here it was just not realistic enough.

I think, if what I think is important who knows?, that the author used this book to reverse all of the erors of his third book. Everything that happens here reverses what happened and leaves the characters somewhat further developed but back together happy and sound. I always like a book about the underdog winning. (Good guy wins, gets the girl, kills the bad guy) Greek tragedy are not for me. I want the geek to get the supermodel and kill the arch villain while becoming king.

About the Author

Robert Sedgewick is the William O. Baker professor of computer science at Princeton University. He has held visiting research positions at several advanced research laboratories and serves on the Adobe Systems board. He is also the coauthor (with Kevin Wayne) of Introduction to Programming in Java and Algorithms, Fourth Edition (both from Addison-Wesley).

Kevin Wayne is the Phillip Y. Goldman senior lecturer in computer science at Princeton University, where he has taught since 1998. He is an ACM Distinguished Educator and holds a Ph.D. in operations research and industrial engineering

from Cornell University.

Robert Dondero is a lecturer in computer science at Princeton University. He has taught there since 2001, earning eight excellence in engineering education awards, and a lifetime achievement award for excellence in teaching. He holds

Great way to start programming

Prof Sedgewick's books have always been the best resource to learn algorithms. One of the best books for beginners with a great companion website: http://introcs.cs.princeton.edu/python . This book is a prelude to those advanced books which use Python and contains a lot of interesting programming problems. I have adopted this book for the basic course I am teaching this semester. The price of the book is extremely high which might hamper the book being used widely.

Odd Selection of Authors for Such a Great Topic

This book was written by three very distinctly different authors, which had it's own bipolar quality to it. One of the authors is quite technical and enjoys digging deep into Python with the enthusiasm of a puppy with a new ball. Another author likes to show the readers how to create and play games using Python and has a great flare for taking the pages from simple steps to wonderful creations. The last author is the grumpy professor that just just want you to shut up and listen to his lecture. That author knows way too much about Python but not enough about teaching new learners.

In a weird way, it all balances out.

It's like the old good cop, bad cop, psychopath cop thing.

There is quite a bit of math in this book but then again, most programming books are heavy into functions, arrays, patterns and other mind numbing topics. Thanks to the bipolar nature of the writers, the reader isn't overburdened with too much math at any given time. The math also builds on itself to show you how you get from point A to point 74.b14 of quadrant strray.create.id [i+j]. See how easy that is?

I'm not a math guy, which is why I have too many speeding tickets and spend too much at the grocery store. I did enjoy this book, though. This is a computer science book written from an academic community that just so happens to cover Python. In my opinion, if you really want to learn Python, you should look at another book. This is the type of book you get assigned in school, not one you buy because you want to learn how to code.

Python is a hackers language. It is simple, clean and easy to work with. This book makes it appear to much more complicated than it needs to be. Sure, the games are fun to work through and the theory portions are nice to know but it doesn't get into the heart of Python's strengths as a language.

Introduction to Programming in Python gives a great overview of some simple possibilities built into the language but it doesn't show you the real engine under the hood of that monster car. If I were looking at a method for learning Python by reading books, I would place this one as my third or forth book to read. It is almost a reference book because it tries to sell specific parts of Python to an academic audience. Most of the Python folks I know would not be interested in this book unless they were teaching first or second year college course on Python.

There are examples on how to build vector drawings, find the quickest path through a maze, validating a doubling hypothesis and sorting (lots of sorting). I thought I was at the laundromat doing all that sorting. The authors included plenty of code to tool around with. Some of the critical parts of the code are listed on the authors web site.

Note to authors around the world: Don't put important parts of your book on a public web site because books get passed down and often have a longer life expectancy than you web site. Missing code sucks, give us a CD or even a micoSD card that has the code on it.

Expect to find the usual exercises at the end of each chapter. This seems to be the formula for all books these days. I was reading Green Eggs and Ham with my daughter and there were practice questions plug in there too.

The book sits at 771 pages and is well written but would not be my first choice for learning Python. The charts and diagrams helped to illustrate information but nothing spectacular. I do like green eggs myself.

Loved the treatment of CS1

I came across this book by coincidence - I was taking a refresher course on Algorithms via coursera, and needed to buy the Sedgewick's Algorithms book.I saw this book during my search, and jumped at the chance, mostly because I was keen to pick up Python, and more importantly refresh myself with CS1. The book did not disappoint, it's thoughtfully written, provides great explanations, and some wonderful examples/problems from various disciplines. Sedgewick et al, makes this learning experience superb in my opinion. I hope they produce their famous Algorithms book in Python too.

A lucid, beautiful novel with a sincere and sarcastic tone

Solal is the son of the chief rabbi of Cephalonia. He is on his way to become a highly recognised diplomat for the United Nations. He then falls for a sweet and beautiful French catholic girl, just on the eve of WWII. They get together, passionate, ignorant of their families' disapprovals. But the growing antisemitism affects Solal's love and behaviour, and he becomes sarcastic, irritable and guilty, in spite of Aurore's efforts to keep their love alive.This is written in a beautiful, original style by a wonderful and sincere author who deserve international recognition. His tone gets you to the insights of human brain, which he analyzes with an incredible lucidity. Read it !
