Following the Italian surrender in September 1943, a number of aces continued to take the fight to the Allies as part of the Luftwaffe-run ANR, which was equipped with far more potent equipment such as the Bf 109G, Macchi 205V and Fiat G.55. Flying these types, the handful of ANR squadrons continued to oppose Allied bombing raids on northern Italy until VE-Day.

The desert fighters.

Feeling a definite win in the west, Benito Mussolini felt that joining the war with Germany he could take credit and the spoils in the victory over England. That would prove to be a very fatal choice, for in the years to come Italy would be subjected to harsh fighting, heavy bombings from USAAF bombers, and a divided country for the Axis or Allies when the Americans stormed Sicily, then Italy itself.

Not using very good aircraft--namely the CR.42, Mc.200 and G.50--the Italians lost heavily against the Allies in Africa and the European theatre. The book explains about pilots who fought in CR.42s in the African front with the Germans and their Bf-109s, to the Mc.202/-205 and G.55 in the defense of Italy. I liked how the authors set the book up, explaining about the background to war, the theatres the pilots fought in, the air groups, then the aces. I found this a joy to read--all 85 pages. In appendices the authors give you a full list (or almost) of Italian aces. I am keeping this book secure in my library of 30 and counting Osprey books.

Italian Aces of World War 2

A fascinating review of an often overlooked subject that is long overdue. I knew the Italian Air Force fought with bravery and tenacity during the war, but had no idea they had produced over 50 pilots who scored five or more victories! Not only do the authors, Giorgio Apostolo and Giovanni Massimello, give the reader an overview of the war, but also organization of the air force by wings (Stormos). A Stormo analysis consists of breakdowns by Gruppos (Groups) and Squadriglie (Squadrons). Also a Squadriglie by Squadriglie review of types flown, the Fiat G.50 and G.55, also the Fiat G.32 and G.42 series, the last biplanes flown in the war! And fighter types produced by Macchi and Reggiane. Tragically, we learn of the executions of pilots who flew "up north" for the Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana, or ANR, by their fellow Italian citizens as reprisals after the war had ended because they had sided with Mussolini. The color profiles are superb, as we have come to expect from this series, 40 different fighters flown by the aces. My only complaint is the lack of color profiles concerning pilot uniforms and flying garb, but judging by the photos,(many never before seen), the Italian pilots wore whatever was comfortable for the theater of operations at the time. In closing, a "must have" for any modeller or historian!

That anything publishable would come out on this subject is a wonder. In this case, it took a supreme level of dedication by the authors to produce this volume. Many other reviewers have given it 5 stars, so I'll avoid repeating them.
The main virtue to me is the meticulous search for historical truth. Not easy, when facing incomplete official records that also were subject to shifts in method. The authors chose to go after ORIGINAL sources. While this limits their being complete (a bit much to expect in any ace study), what you do get has withstood their rigorous methodology: Brief ace profiles; an overview of Italian fighter operations; fresh photo illustrations; high quality a/c profiles -- that you can trust.
There isn't much in English on Italian air ops, nor aces. So this entry not only breaks new ground for English-speakers, it is as authoritative as the best of any in the Osprey series.

About the Author
Dirk M. Guldi completed both his undergraduate studies (1988) and PhD (1990) at the University of Cologne (Germany). Following postdoctoral appointments at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (USA), the Hahn-Meitner Institute Berlin (1992), and Syracuse University, he joined the faculty of the Notre Dame Radiation Laboratory in 1995.
He was promoted a year later from assistant to associate professional specialist, and remained affiliated to Notre Dame until 2004. Since 2004, he is Full Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Pharmacy at the Friedrich-Alexander-University in Erlangen. His research interests focus on the fundamental structural and electronic requirements for ultrafast charge transport and optical gating in carbon nanostructure arrays of donor-acceptor ensembles and in nanostructured thin films to address issues that correspond to the optimization and fine-tuning of dynamics and/or efficiencies of solar energy conversion.

Nazario Mart?n is full professor of Organic Chemistry at the University Complutense of Madrid. His research interests span a range of targets with emphasis on the chemistry of carbon nanostructures involving fullerenes and carbon nanotubes, pi-conjugated systems as molecular wires, and Electroactive molecules, in the context of electron transfer processes, photovoltaic applications and nanoscience. He is currently a member of the Editorial Board of Chemical Communications, and the Regional Editor for Europe of the journal Fullerenes, Nanotubes and Carbon Nanostructures. He has received the DuPont Award for Science in 2007. He is a fellow of The Royal Society of Chemistry, vice-director of IMDEA - Nanoscience Institute, and the President of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry.

I'm a grown up and I love this book!

I've read this to my kids twice now and it's fabulous! They love anything to do with The Wimpy Kid series, including the movies. It was fun to watch the films and then read how they were made.

Like all of Kinney's books, The Movie Diary is written in a very friendly, conversational tone. In easy to understand terms, he describes some of the basic ins and outs of casting and filming a movie. He describes many of the roles of cast and crew and helps the reader understand how much work goes into a 90-minute flick. He includes lots of color pictures as well.

Very enlightening and entertaining. I highly recommend this book if you have a Wimpy Kid fan in your life.

Cheaper than Scholastic

My son came home from school with the Scholastic book order. There was a four book set of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. He already had two of the books in the set. I went on line with Amazon.com. I ordered four new hard back cover books for cheaper than what I could have ordered from Scholastic and received the books that he wanted within two days. Also, the movie of Diary of a Wimpy Kid had just come out in our area so this was perfect timing. The movie was great but the books are even better. I recommend reading the book first. I am a teacher assistant in my son's school in second grade. He is also in second grade and although the books are based on a kid in middle school this age group loves them. My son is a reluctant reader and these books have been wonderful in getting him to read more. He loves the pictures and comics throughout and the author has done an outstanding job with these books.

The "Wimpy Kid Movie Diary" is an excellent book that should be a part of every Diary of a Wimpy Kid series collection. It describes, in detail, how the movie was made and the complexities of making a movie from this type of cartoon stick figures style of book. The book details the in's & out's of the movie making process, difficulties, on-set experiences, casting, all the behind the scenes stories, and a lot more.

Between Jeff Kinney's narrative and the great pictures, you really get a sense of what went into making the movie and how complex the process was. It makes both the book and the movie become more alive and interesting. Considering the incredible success of the movie, this is a great book for teaching in schools for drama, education or just general information. An very enjoyable read!

Complete primer on lead generation and nurturing

For social media marketing courses aimed at lead generation and nurturing, Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah offer a complete primer on the subject. Their Inbound Marketing book provides a cradle-to-grave formula for applying social channels, SEO and content marketing as a substitute for outdated outbound marketing techniques.

The book, in my opinion, qualifies academically as a primary reading for select undergraduate level courses focused on lead nurturing. The recommendation is based on the following:

1) As pioneers in the field, the authors provide a convincing argument why marketing should be taught using non-interrupting, permissive approaches to trust building. Especially at a time when scholars and practitioners are bombarded with complex optimization strategies, brand storytelling trends, ever changing mobile marketing strategies and costly engagement tactics, this book serves as a refresher as to why we got here in the first place. Concepts like building remarkable content, using your website as a marketing hub, designing effective landing pages and strategic placing the right calls to action are often lost in today’s overcrowded library of content marketing books.

2) The book is well organized to fit a funnel strategy especially useful for sales personnel. Early chapters deal with getting found by prospects through quality content, social media and legitimate SEO tactics. Subsequent chapters take readers through the sales conversion process while updating us on visual content and software tools. Most books take the opposite approach, thereby making the case for revenue generation rather weak. This book’s focus on attracting, tracking and building trust at the right stage in a buyer’s decision cycle is a far better approach to convincing skeptical social media adopters that inbound marketing produces results.

3) As experienced marketing automation providers, Halligan and Shah offer credible and proven examples of tracking and advancing prospects through the sales funnel.

4) The book is one of few oriented to entrepreneurs seeking start-up adoption of inbound marketing.

Actionable, theoretical, and transforming

The work of Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah have not only changed marketing forever, but changed selling as well. As a sales leadership coach, I help my clients pick up where marketing leaves off to get new business faster. Companies that embrace what the pages of Inbound Marketing explain end up transforming their entire sales model. They get a lot more prospects with a lot less effort and cost, and must reconfigure the sales team to accommodate. These new Inbound prospects have their own set of challenges from a sales perspective but it's a high-class problem for most companies. This book is as much hands-on and actionable as it is marketing theory. I particularly liked the chapters on converting visitors and prospects into leads. Getting the "calls to action" right is critical and nobody gets this better than these two Hubspot guys. I'm not sure how you can be working effectively anywhere near the marketing and sales departments at your company without the information that Brian and Dharmesh have shared with us in the pages of Inbound Marketing.
