Great Book

If you are really are interested in mushrooms and want to know what your looking for then this, and the companion books, are a must have! Don't let the "technical" terms stop you from buying these books because you will need to know them if you are serious about this this subject. I have over a half dozen books and this subject and NONE of them are as detailed.

Very Technical

The abundant use of very technical microbiological terminology makes this difficult reading for anyone not already familiar with the science of microbiology.

That said, it is well illustrated with good photos and drawings. Definitely not a good starting point for the beginner.

The best Analytical Mechanics ever

This is my second review of this book, I gave five stars to the first edition, while my only cons (below in quotations) was the price (the book was out of print and a used copy cost at least thousand dollars!):
"My only criticism is about the price. It is not that this book isn't worth it; after all, it is the bible of analytical mechanics, no doubt, but even the holy bible costs two orders of magnitude less, thus the price becomes a barrier between this superb book and the potential reader, which is unfortunate."
Well, the problem was fixed; it is still not the cheapest book, but for 1400 pages of analytical beauty, for the most authoritative book in analytical mechanics, it is a fair price.
This reprint is very well formatted, and the binding is hardcover, as a classical book of this magnitude deserves.
In a nutshell, it is an excellent book for self study as well as the best reference for the analytical minded engineer, scientist and researcher. It is the mechanics book you want to have ready on your desk!

If you are a theoretical-minded dynamicist (mathematician, physicist or engineer), this is the one book you want with you on an isolated island (and if you have more space in your suitcase, take also Tensor Calculus and Analytical Dynamics). I hate to use hyperbole; therefore I'll just call it a fantastic book; which, in this case, is not a hyperbole at all. It is a 1400 page book, dense with beautiful mathematics, deep insight and criticism, comprehensive historical remarks, and general philosophy. Frequently it is even entertaining. There is a good balance between rigorousness and clarity, there is a meticulous use of notations, an extensive literature survey (even original references from French German and Russian), while the style is humble (which is hard to find these days in high level books). In short, it is a literature per se, and in my opinion, the best, and most comprehensive book, ever written on theoretical mechanics. If one wants to understand the deep theoretical foundations of mechanics, this is the book, and it is very readable.
The book uses the classical and reliable tensor calculus. The good news (to those who are scared of this animal) is that there is a self-contained introduction to tensors, so the reader doesn't have to open any other book to understand the notations. The use of tensors is specified, however, to the book. This author's other book, Tensor Calculus and Analytical Dynamics, is a definite solid source for tensor analysis, and I highly recommend it to the theoretically minded. But the author doesn't just give the tiresome technical details, the book is also full with geometrical explanations and with many self-explanatory plots.
A large part of the book is about the theoretical foundation of numerous approaches to the derivation of the equations of motion, under various constraints, holonomic, non-holonomic and others. As with many other issues, the author is very careful with definitions, and criticizes sloppy definitions and inaccuracies in other references, something that contributes to a deeper understanding of the reader. The book presents the most comprehensive analysis of constraint dynamics I know of. And there are many theoretical tools, such as the transpositional relations the important Frobenius integrability theorem, and more. Then it presents integral approaches, an extensive treatment of the Lagrangian, and variety of variational principles. In addition, there is a comprehensive review of Hamiltonian dynamics, including canonical transformations/perturbations, the beautiful Noether theorem (integrals of motion based on symmetries of action integrals), and more. The part on the Hamiltonian, humbly called "introduction" is in fact equivalent to a whole book on this subject, and it is very well presented. The book also presents some analytical solution methods to classical equations in non-linear dynamics. There are also many interesting, methodical (and non-trivial) examples.
Just a concluding remark. One may argue that a dynamicist needs only one working method. So a small book, presenting, say, Kane's method, is sufficient. I strongly disagree. First, problems in dynamics are different and require different formulation methods. Second, all methods are inter-connected, and a serious dynamicist must see the forest for the trees (and vice versa). Third, the greatest scholars for hundreds of years gave us many analytical tools and insight, and we shouldn't ignore them. This book answers brilliantly all above three arguments.
This book deserves more than 5 stars; but that is Amazon upper limit.

This book is worth the price of one hundred other books

This is, by far, the best single (most comprehensive) volume ever written in the English language on the subject of Analytical Mechanics.
This book has a 70 page !! bibliography covering, really, the entire modern literature on analytical mechanics including original works
in German, Russian, French, and Chinese.
Professor Papastavridis is a true master of mechanics and a throwback to another era when professors were paid to be professional
scholars. He stands right alongside the other modern masters of mechanics such as Synge, Hamel, Lur'e, Sedov, and Truesdell.
I have a collection of technical books in the 1200 volume range and If someone put a gun to my head and told
me that I could only keep one book, I would keep this one. This book is optimal for a graduate student in mechanical or aerospace
engineering. Even the 3 excellent texts by Donald Greenwood (the de facto standard for ME/AE students over the years) do not nearly
cover the same depth and breath of material. This book gets my highest recommendation.

Another great book by Richard Koch

I have read all the books on 80/20 by Richard and all of them have extended and helped my thinking in business and throughout my life in general. I would classify myself as lazy and intelligent (if I do say so myself). What this book allows you to see through the 10 styles of management is a blueprint for self-development. Loved it!

A must read for anyone interested in the subject

I "never" give a ten. But out of respect, this gets a ten. The author was executed by the Nazis after the Ghetto Uprising. The Notes were hidden, later found, and were assembled into a book.
Not only is this book invaluable as a source of historic perspective, it is a spellbinding book to read. I especially recommend this book to those non-Jews, like myself, whose understanding and respect for what happened needed some growth.
All the more erie, I read this book while walking the streets where it happened. You cannot help but be deeply moved by this book, its story, and its people.
I urge anyone with the slightest interest to push Amazon to get it for you. I have bought two copies, it takes time, but they can do it. It is worth the effort.

Holocaust Horror

As we each sit in our little world each day perhaps having pity on ourselves. This book should be a guideline to keep us from self-pity. The author fairly reports from diaries gathered throughout the Holocaust Horror. He does not only blame Nazi Germans but Jewish Police. This is a bold, honest reflection into the eyes of children, adolescents, parents, as they were waiting for their fate. This book made me smile about humanitarism even when they truly did not have alot to share. This book made me scared for what the power of humans can do to weaken spirits. It made me cry to realize the horror they felt. I cheered hoping the author would go unharmed. I wept when I realized a man and his family perish because of a cause they firmly defended. True heroism.
Unquestionably, this is one of the best written books I have read pertaining to the tragic historic event. It is an easy reading book however, it is hard to put down once you start.
I will cherish my book always.

Historical Perspective on the Ghetto

This book presents a factual chronological statement on the conditions, daily tribulations, and perils of the Warsaw Ghetto. It is written in a documentary style rather than an emotional diary, thus providing a basis to compare and contrast against other "diaries". THIS SAID, it is a moving statement on Warsaw Jewry and their ability to overcome impossible odds, eventhough the overwhelming majority perished. The plethora of historical revisionists that now claim the Holocaust was a hoax must FIRST contend with "Notes"( aginst which they will lose). A truly powerful work.

About the Author
Robert Barron (STD, Institut Catholique de Paris) is auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He founded Word on Fire, a Catholic ministry of evangelism, and previously served as rector of Mundelein Seminary and president of the University of St. Mary of the Lake. Barron has written numerous books, including" Catholicism "(over 100,000 copies sold), "Exploring Catholic Theology", " The Priority of Christ", "2 Samuel "in the Brazos Theological Commentary on the Bible series, "The Strangest Way: Walking the Christian Path" (winner of a Catholic Press Association Book Award), and "Heaven in Stone and Glass".

A Well-Articulated Path

In "The Strangest Way: Walking the Christian Path," Robert Barron argues for a Christianity rooted in spiritual praxis, not abstraction. Barron believes that Christian spirituality - traditionally expressed in movement, practice, and apprenticeship - has been worn thin by accommodation to modernity and become a faint echo of secular culture or a privatized set of convictions. He regards the deculturalization of Christianity as beginning in the subjectivity, rationalism, and suspiciousness of Cartesian philosophy. This cultural mindset was in turn taken up by Christian apologists like Schleiermacher, Tillich, and Rahner who reduced Christianity to something best understood as interior, subjective experience.
The antidote to this development, Barron believes, is a return to spiritual practices that celebrate the playful, embodied, patient, and irreducibly complex working of the mind. According to Barron, we must "plow, climb, will, act, decide, push our way" to insight. To embrace Christianity as a world and a form of life, Barron delineates three paths of spiritual practice. The first involves "finding the center" and is achieved by prayer, pilgrimage, use of religious articles, and fasting. The second, "knowing you're a sinner," is walked by means of confession, truth-telling, and forgiveness. The third, "realizing that life is not about you," is discovered through discernment, works of mercy, nonviolence, and liturgy.
An especially attractive feature of this book is Barron's use of literature to exemplify and expand on his three paths. The selections are aptly chosen, with Evelyn Waugh's "Brideshead Revisited" used for the chapter on "finding the center," Dante's "Purgatorio" for "knowing you're a sinner," and Flannery O'Connor's "The Violent Bear It Away" for "realizing that life is not about you."
Barron's analyses are generally well-done but there were several lapses. I question how one could write a detailed and extended explication of "Brideshead Revisited" without once mentioning there was a character called Lady Julia Flyte? Less serious perhaps, but something that has always bothered me about "The Violent Bear It Away," is the lack of emphasis on the drowning death of the young Bishop. By focussing only on Bishop's baptism by young Tarwater, Barron joins the author and other critics who don't delve into the subject of Tarwater's moral accountability for his death.
One final observation that I feel compelled to make. In his otherwise brilliant treatment of "attachment" as addiction, Barron makes several disparaging remarks about "a culture that puts a premium on good feelings and attempts to deny and medicate depression." Only someone who has never experienced or observed the depredations of clinical depression could make a such an insensitive comment about the medications that allow otherwise ravaged persons to live productive and godly lives.

Walking the path: Good reading for Lent

Fr. Barron sets out three paths by which to walk "the strangest way" - those of finding the center (making Christ the center of our lives); knowing you're a sinner; and realizing your life is not about you. In describing each path, the author draws intelligently on theological and literary sources to give us a sense of the richness and profundity of the Christian faith. The book is not primarily a polemic against the dumbed down, accommodating, secularized, New Agey, or syncretistic strains of modern(ist) Christian spirituality, although these tendencies are duly noted by way of making the contrast to an alternative orthodox, adult spiritual practice.

In this respect, Barron distinguishes the spiritual search approach, whereby we seek the divine, to the "hound of heaven" understanding in which God's love pursues us. In contrast to an emphasis on the subjective, the interior, the psychological, the private experience, Barron emphasizes the Christian path as one walked in communion with the Church on earth in which the liturgy, the summit and source of Christian spirituality, unites us with the heavenly liturgy. It is a path that involves, especially in Lent, practices like prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, the physical and earthly as well as the spiritual and supernatural--combined in the Incarnation, and in Christ's real presence in the bread and wine made with human hands.

In all this, Barron achieves at least two things supremely well in my view. As the title suggests, he makes the familiar strange, helping us see with new eyes how different Christianity is, with its representation, not of human bliss but of a crucified man as the expression of God's broken heart, his outpouring of love as well as of our sinfulness and need for it.

Secondly, the book offers both an intellectually rich and satisfying orientation to Christian, specifically Catholic, spirituality and at the same time a guide to walking the Christian path with specific practices to follow as we do so.

This wonderful, challenging book is an excellent accompaniment to Fr. Barron's DVD, Untold Blessing: Three Paths to Holiness which covers the same material in lecture format that is somewhat more popular. There is a study guide to accompany the DVD. Fr. Barron also presents the second path, knowing you're a sinner, in another DVD, Seven Deadly Sins, Seven Lively Virtues, a superb meditation on Dante's Inferno (The Divine Comedy, Volume 1, Hell).

I have read The Strangest Way and I admit I shared another reviewer's unease about the way depression and its treatment were mentioned. Still, Fr. Barron is the most helpful theological and spiritual guide I know of in the U.S., so I would not be dissuaded from buying, studying, and using this book by one unfelicitous phrase that needed qualification.
