RUEY S. TSAY, PhD, is H.G.B. Alexander Professor of Econometrics and Statistics at The University of Chicago Booth School of Business. A Fellow of the American Statistical Association, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and Academia Sinica, Dr. Tsay is author of Analysis of Financial Time Series, Third Edition and coauthor of A Course in Time Series Analysis.

Unexciting but useful

As the Russians say, "the veteran horse plows a straight but shallow furrow". The book's preface acknowledges an overlap with the earlier "Analysis of financial time series" (AFTS), pointing out the novelty of included examples. I would call "overlap" an understatement, and describe "Introduction to analysis of financial data with R" (IAFD) as a subset of AFTS, illustrated with examples, implemented in R. I may have wished for something fancier than the oh-so-nineties repertoire of ARIMA and GARCH - the marginal exceptions show up in the sections on ACD and EVT - but accept that the book is meant to be a textbook in a master's-level course. (Yet is priced at over $100! This made the choice between four and three stars easy). I am unimpressed with its usage of R: the ARMA/GARCH analyses are quite repetitive, the plotting is basic, data manipulation altogether absent, an early encouraging use of quantmod package does not develop at all. (If you visit the book's web page - and you will have to, to get the scripts that, for example, estimate GARCH flavors; in the book, it's just "source(..)" - you will count nine R packages used: fGarch, MASS, evir, quantreg, quantmod, TSA, fracdiff, fBasics, mnormt). The occasional typos - the amusing "Merry Lynch" has been caught in the errata, but others remain - add to the impression of a path-of-low-resistance approach. Even so, given the author's caliber, you get a useful, quality book. I would suggest taking a look at IAFD and the two books by David Ruppert, to see which one(s) you prefer.

That would be fine if the author had presented more examples of how ...

(As a disclaimer, I have an advanced degree in signal processing and image analysis.) This appears to be a textbook for an advanced course in finance. I had hoped it was a book for investors who have an interest in programming and writing their own portfolio management software in R. Instead, it focuses on being a book that covers many of the advanced time series analysis methods used in financial modeling. That would be fine if the author had presented more examples of how the methods were applied to financial modeling and how the results were used. It would have been helpful to also have more comparisons of the pros and cons of the different methods.

What I found lacking in this book was more description of the application of the methods described. The presentation is: here is a method for analyzing a time series and here is some R code (sometimes). It assumes that the reader already understands the derivation/origin of the method being presented from a signal processing/mathematics standpoint. The text does a poor job of explaining the role of each method in financial modeling. How would one apply a given technique and exactly for what purpose? So, the book seems to be written for that narrow audience who knows the derivation of the methods presented and knows the application as well. Equations are presented with a terse explanation of their parameters.

Finally, the book cries out for a good editor. Dr. Tsay does not write clearly, unfortunately, and in many instances the syntax of the book is cumbersome, making the meaning difficult to discern.

Very dense and technical.

This is a really, really dense and technical read, especially for a book that calls itself an "introduction". I'm a graduate student in analytics but have been unable to get anything out of this book because it is so high-level and filled with unreadable equations. I'd only recommend it for those who have a very advanced understanding of statistics and mathematics (calculus and beyond), since that seems to be the assumed baseline for readers.

I have Hashimoto's and one must do the elimination month in or to find out what ones triggers are. There really is no other way around your thyroid (and adrenal) problems. With that being said, who wants to give up everything "good" for 30 days and still get your family their meals too?

Enter Karen's cookbook and action plan. If you are exhausted and feel like crap... This book will become your bible! I have named her the patron saint of all those who suffer from Hashimoto's.

Clearly she is a genius. She "gets" the what, where and why's of each and everything one could ever need, who is silently suffering thru their 30 days. Because you have this disease, you need to find your triggers and reinvent what goes on with your diet. This is your new pathway to food and how it will help you. Consider it a primer.

She explains why you need to take action with this plan. Why certain foods are off of your diet. Why you need to track your symptons and then give you a chart to do it with. What to stock your pantry with. Shopping list for each week and every week. For delicious meals that serve four... For each meal of the day. And she tells you what to expect within this diet change, because for us, we will feel better each week.

Then she explains in detail what to do after the 30 days are up. How to reintroduce the 10 foods you took out and how to tell if it is indeed a trigger. Plus, you get another chart to track these Symptoms too.

All of this is important. However, it doesn't mean much if you don't like what you are eating. I was so surprised at how great Tasting everything was. We are talking about three meals a day for 30 days and then some. Recipes that you will reach for again and again - after - your 30 days are up. I would have been lost without her cookbook. The book does all of your thinking for you and avoids all of the hassles... Easy peasy!

Very disappointed - misrepresentation.

I am very disappointed with this book. I thought I would be getting a cookbook that would help me manage the Autoimmune Protocol and provide me with recipes that would help me cook for myself and my family. Well, the book starts off with a 3 day cleanse, where as AIP recommends 3 weeks. Also, right from day 1, they tell you to buy 2 dozen eggs and have an egg salad recipe. Eggs are forbidden in true Hashimoto's AIP, so why are they filling these recipes with so many eggs? I'm doing the 3 week AIP cleanse as recommended and I can only make about 4 recipes in this book, and that will still require some modification. So disappointed and feel that this was poorly represented. This should be a Paleo cookbook and not for Hashimoto's.

Deceitful, full of recipes using ingredients that cause issues in people with autoimmune problems.

Not what I expected. There are a lot of recipes taking up pages that use, nuts, night shades and eggs. When dealing with autoimmune issues like Hashimoto's those are things you need to eliminate and try to reintroduce at a later time. The author has you eating eggs on the 31 day elimination phase. I feel like I wasted my money on this purchase!

The timber merchant is concerned with the ability of a forest to yield saleable lumber. The interest here is in the size of the larger trunks with some concern for the kinds of trees. At a less destructive level the scientist aims to compre hend the forest from many different points of view. The forester himself, in conjunction with the taxonomist, will wish to analyze the floristic composition of the forest and perhaps account for species diversity in an evolutionary time scale (e.g., FEDOROV, 1966; ASHTON, 1969). The evolu tionary biologist in his turn may be concerned with repro ductive strategies in forest trees (e.g., BAWA, 1974), espe cially in a comparative way.

The essays in this volume analyze war, its strategic characterisitics and its political and social functions, over the past five centuries. The diversity of its themes and the broad perspectives applied to them make the book a work of general history as much as a history of the theory and practice of war from the Renaissance to the present. Makers of Modern Strategy from Machiavelli to the Nuclear Age takes the first part of its title from an earlier collection of essays, published by Princeton University Press in 1943, which became a classic of historical scholarship. Three essays are repinted from the earlier book; four others have been extensively revised. The rest--twenty-two essays--are new.

The subjects addressed range from major theorists and political and military leaders to impersonal forces. Machiavelli, Clausewitz, and Marx and Engels are discussed, as are Napoleon, Churchill, and Mao. Other essays trace the interaction of theory and experience over generations--the evolution of American strategy, for instance, or the emergence of revolutionary war in the modern world. Still others analyze the strategy of particular conflicts--the First and Second World Wars--or the relationship between technology, policy, and war in the nuclear age. Whatever its theme, each essay places the specifics of military thought and action in their political, social, and economic environment. Together the contributors have produced a book that reinterprets and illuminates war, one of the most powerful forces in history and one that cannot be controlled in the future without an understanding of its past.

Makers of Modern Strategy , first pub lished in 1943, deserved and demanded updating. The 28 essays in the new vol ume7 more than in the original range from excellent to outstanding. They reflect the skills of a cross-section of leading military historians. But re viving a classic is a difficult task. Some original contributions were discarded, some rewritten, some left virtually in tact. Old and new frequently coexist awkwardly, as when Hajo Holbom and Gunther Rothenberg compete for 19th- century Germany. The editors' reluc tance to impose a common format add ed to an intellectual diffusion most visible in a split between biographic and thematic approaches. As a result, this revision cannot equal its predecessor's status as a standard text. As an antholo gy, however, the work is brilliantly suc cessfuland that is no mean achieve ment. Carl Von Clausewitz defined strategy as the use of combat, or the threat of combat, for the purpose of the war in which it takes place. This formulation, which a modern historian has characterized as both revolutionary and defiantly simplistic, can be amended or expanded without difficulty.

Newer is Not Necessarily Better

This second version of the book is disappointing. I would have thought that it being edited by an historian as good as Peter Paret would have improved on the original, which was edited by Robert Earle. However, it is weaker both in scholarship and accuracy, especially John Shy's essay on Jomini. Old myths are resurrected about the Swiss renegade whose own works are generally historically inaccurate.

Many of the older, more professional, historians, who are unfortunately no longer with us were much more careful in their research and writing, hunting down sources that newer historians either refuse to look for or refuse to use. they also were more blunt, calling a spade a spade, and weren't worried about offending people or in 'revisionist' (read inaccurate) history. Political correctness was unknown to these stalwarts.

Books of this type are highly useful. If you are looking for this particular volume, get the first version edited by Earle, even if you have to go looking in second hand book stores or on the internet in used book services. I did, and it is well worth the effort.

Good Resource

I purchased this book as it was required for USMC Command and Staff Course, but it is a good resource for anyone who wants a selection of articles and pieces from a wide range of time periods who has an interest in military strategy. The book is divided into eras and within each era there are a number of articles. As a result, it is fairly easy to find what you want without a huge hassle. It doesn't go into extreme detail on any one topic or era, but is a great resource for a general overview and enough of an understanding that you feel pretty good about the topic.
