Leonard J. Brooks is Professor of Business Ethics & Accounting at the Rotman School of Management of the University of Toronto. He is Executive Director of the Clarkson Centre for Business Ethics & Board Effectiveness, Director of the Professional Accounting Centre, the Master of Management & Professional Accounting Program, and the Master of Forensic Accounting Program (formerly the Diploma in Investigative & Forensic Accounting Program). Professor Brooks served 14 years on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Business Ethics and as Founding Editor of Corporate Ethics Monitor, a pioneering bimonthly publication. He has published articles on ethics issues in the Journal of Business Ethics, Accounting Organizations and Society, Canadian Accounting Perspectives, and Business & Society. He authored BUSINESS & PROFESSIONAL ETHICS FOR ACCOUNTANTS, 2E; ETHICS & GOVERNANCE: DEVELOPING AND MAINTAINING AN ETHICAL CORPORATE CULTURE, 4E; and PRINCIPLES OF STAKEHOLDER MANAGEMENT: THE CLARKSON PRINCIPLES. Professor Brooks also authored/edited the research monograph CANADIAN CORPORATE SOCIAL PERFORMANCE. Prior to joining the University of Toronto, he obtained his CA designation (in 1970) and subsequently became an audit manager and Director of Manpower for Touche Ross & Co. (now Deloitte) in Toronto. Professor Brooks served as a member, then chair, of the Chartered Accountants' national Board of Examiners and chair of its national Syllabus Committee. He was named a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (FCA) of Ontario in 1982. These professional designations were converted to CPA and FCPA in 2012. He consults with individuals, corporations, governmental and non-governmental organizations and serves as an expert witness and frequent media-commentator. Professor Brooks is also a former director of the Canadian Centre for Ethics & Corporate Policy and a former president of the Canadian Academic Accounting Association.

Paul Dunn is an Associate Professor of Business Ethics and the Chair of the Organizational Behaviour, Human Resources, Entrepreneurship and Ethics department at the Goodman School of Business, Brock University. Dr. Dunn holds two degrees in philosophy: a bachelor's and a master's, both from the University of Toronto. He also holds a doctorate in accounting from Boston University. He is also a CPA and was a practicing chartered accountant in downtown Toronto for a dozen years. Dr. Dunn's research focuses on corporate governance and corporate social responsibility. His work has been published in a variety of scholarly journals, including Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Management, Business & Society, Journal of Management and Governance and Business Ethics Quarterly. He sits on the editorial boards of the Journal of Business Ethics and Business & Society and is an active review more than a half-dozen other scholarly journals. He is the Treasurer of the Social Issues in Management division of the Academy of Management as well as serving as the Treasurer for the Society for Business Ethics. He has been interviewed on TV, the radio, and in the press in Canada, the United States and Sweden.

Tedious

This is one of the worst textbooks I have ever read, and I have read a lot (Bachelors, Masters in Accounting, Juris Doctorate).

There is a big focus on the philosophy of ethics and the philosophers themselves. While this information is not "unuseful" it certainly doesn't lend itself to the sort of practical situations that people in the business world face. I understand that the goal was to provide a general framework within which one could evaluate a business ethics question, but it seems like a bit of an esoteric way to accomplish a very practical end.

Ethics education in business school is obviously very important in the wake of Enron, WorldCom, etc. I believe concrete examples and guidelines are much more helpful than philosophy in this particular instance. I found it particularly troubling because many of my classmates were younger than I and the philosopical lean of this book seemed to fly right past them.

Horrible Text Book

If you professor has chosen this book he must be getting a kickback or hasn't read it. Important concepts are just thrown in with "filler". Very hard to get important information quickly....not a good reference....written like a novel. Lots of redundancy...book could easily be a forth of the size with better structure and writing.

Hard to understand text and writing style

I was not a big fan of this textbook.
I felt the text was very convoluted and hard to understand at times.

I did not like the writing style or the way various concepts were explained.

I relied on the lecture and professors handouts for learning the material as I did not like the way the material was presented in the text.

Two Down... I Think I'll Go for a Third

At first I thought I'd just read the first book in the series to satisfy my curiosity. After all, I'd heard about the "Wheel of Time" for quite a while. I had mixed feelings about Book One, but, after reading Book Two I'm getting into the story more. Character development is critical to my enjoyment of a story -- especially one so long as the WOT. I'm pleased to report that even though many of them remain sketchy, Jordan is certainly developing the characters more. Further, many of Jordan's characters start out young and naive. Through the course of the story, those characters grow up. I like that.

Finally, I think the writing is consistently good. Occasionally, Jordan will come up w/ a phrase or a description that is elegant and striking. Those gems are worth noticing.

I have read some reviews that criticize this series as being too derivative of the "Lord of the Rings," and I think I understand that complaint. I do see similarities, and some of them are unfortunate. At the same time, the concept of an epic battle between Good and Evil transcends the LOTR, so it seems a bit unrealistic to write this series off because of places where the WOT veers a bit closer than I'd like.

In particular, I think Jordan's main characters are quite distinct from Tolkien's. And more to the point, the battle in WOT is between the Hero and the Face of Evil (capitalized here because they represent archetypes). OTOH, in the LOTR, the main thread of the story focuses on the destruction of an artifact. So, at this point at least, I see more than enough distinction between the stories to hold my interest.

So I guess I'll give Book Three a try.

Good book in a GREAT series.

Second novel in one of the greatest series ever written. Not the best in the series, but not the worst either. If you've read the first and you are considering continuing, you really should. If you haven't read the first, start with "The Eye of the World". As one progresses through the series more and more characters are added which may be daunting for new readers of fantasy, but all the characters stories are interesting and move the plot along nicely.

Names of places and people can be confusing for those not used to fantasy writing, but the author conveniently provides a pronunciation guide at the end of the novel that can easily be referenced (although the presence of such a thing is telling in-and-of itself).

This series as a whole has everything one could wish for from high fantasy: action, magic, politics, history, relationships, character growth, triumph, betrayal, hope, tragedy, comedy. Not as dark as A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones), not as light as Narnia, not as magical as Harry Potter, not as political as Malazan, and not as historical as Lord of the Rings. However, what this series accomplishes is a blend of all of these in a masterful work of art that is unrivaled in balance across themes.

RIP Robert Jordan, may your work be preserved from the turning of the wheel to delight future generations, time without end.

Character and story development unbelievable

5 star rating bc of ability to develop characters and connect what seem to be a "neverending" story. I find myself wanted to dive back into this fantasy world multiple times a day. Lan, Nynaeve, Minnesota, and Loial are my favorite characters. Although it seems cliche to say, these are a mixture of every single fantasy book or story I have read and combined all in one book.

I asked my friend for a recommendation for a book, and one specifically that hadn't been made into a movie. I've read a movie was once supposed to be made for Wheel of Time, but efforts were unsuccessful. Although a movie is enticing, there is really no need to ruin such a magical story. Amazing books! I recommend to everyone who loves sci-fi, fantasy.

Beginners guide

This book planted a few good seeds of thought however these insights are spread out between pages of basic observations and depressing illustrations. The author should get his hands on some better games (or at least a few from this century) and keep writing because FREEPLAY has a hint of wisdom that could be developed into the classic it wants to be if the author familiarized himself with modern trends. Perhaps if the author was building gaming PCs with his kids or something then the Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance reference on the back would be appropriate, but in its current state I feel that is not an accurate comparison to make.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has found solace in video games who need some kind of inspiration. The book aims to guide the reader to "maximum euphoric bliss, " achieved when we get into Flow with the game.But don't be fooled into thinking this is a self-help book, because it's not. It won't tell you how to get to that state of Bliss. Rather, Shapiro offers his observations a sage wisdom, like aather, for us readers to take as we will. The advice of this book is the sort many could stand to hear. Video games are an increasingly central part of our lives, and provide spiritual opportunities that perhaps go unnoticed by the average player.

So embrace your inner gamer, pick up a controller, and become one with your avatar. The path to Bliss is right there on the screen before you.

Unique insight to video game psychology

While I was most interested to read something on a subject that has hardly been touched (at least from the perspective of the general public) I was fairly disappointed about a third of the way through. While it seems like the book starts out with good points at the beginning of each chapter, it quickly descends into philosophical babble that may be best to leave to the philosophers or psychologists. If the goal was to write a book that is nearly unreadable by the book's topic demographic, then one might consider it a success. Additionally, it is painfully obvious that the author is merely a casual gamer who has touched few games during this decade.
