Inspired by the Texas State raid on the Fundamentalist Church of Latter-day Saints in 2008, authors Stuart A. Wright and Susan J. Palmer decided to collect data on all the raids of this kind that have taken place in Western-style democracies over the last six decades. They thus established the first archive of raided groups and then used it see if any patterns could be identified. Their findings were shocking; there were far more raids than expected, and the vast majority of them had occurred since 1990, reflecting a nearly exponential increase. What could account for this sudden and dramatic increase in state control of minority religions?

In Storming Zion, Wright and Palmer argue that the increased use of these high-risk and extreme types of enforcement corresponds to expanded organization and initiatives by opponents of unconventional religions. Anti-cult organizations provide strategic "frames" that define potential conflicts or problems in a given community as inherently dangerous, and construct narratives that draw on stereotypes of child and sexual abuse, brainwashing, and even mass suicide. The targeted group is made to appear more dangerous than it is, resulting in an overreaction by authorities. Wright and Palmer explore the implications of heightened state repression and control of minority religions in an increasingly multicultural, globalized world. At a time of rapidly shifting demographics within Western societies this book cautions against state control of marginalized groups and offers insight into the reasons why the responses to these groups are often so reactionary.

Stuart A. Wright is Professor of Sociology and Chair of the Department of Sociology, Social Work and Criminal Justice at Lamar University. He has previously published five books, including Armageddon in Waco (1995), Patriots, Politics, and the Oklahoma City Bombing (2007) and Saints under Siege: The Texas State Raid on the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints (with James T. Richardson, 2011).

Susan J. Palmer is an Affiliate Professor in the Religion Department at Concordia University and Member of the Religious Studies Faculty at McGill University. Fun, fun, fun!

Every child I know - my students, my children, my nieces and nephews - loves this book. The repetive refrain is perfect for beginning readers and the rhythm of the language engages young readers immediately. Your child will want to hear the story over and over. Non-readers will make up their own story but the refrain is easy and fun for them to remember and "read".

In this title, Patricia Hubbard uses rhythm and fun to introduce colors. Children are quickly reciting the repetitive refrains with smiles on their faces as this book is introduced. G. Brian Karas' illustrations are colorful and imaginative providing good visualizations to Hubbard's imaginative, colorful ideas. The book uses a familiar crayon box to describe things that can be seen or drawn with each color. Preschoolers through beginning elementary school children love this book!

E P I C F A I L U R E disguised as a prank cook book! The joke is on YOU if you buy it!

Crockpot "dump" meals? Honey Teriyaki Chicken that instructs you to cook the chicken 4-5 hours, remove from the pot and shred with slotted spoon (what does it matter what I shred it with?)?!! The impression is that you DUMP specified ingredients in a crockpot and VOILA! Decent, easy meals to come home to. If I HAD time to prepare meals, I'd buy a regular cook book. And THIS is by an "Amazon.com BEST selling author"? How can THAT be?!! Salsa Chicken; put chicken and salsa in crockpot. Wow. Stellar. Ranch Pork Chops; 2 cans cream of chicken soup, 4-6 pork chops and "1 packet of Ranch." Ranch SALAD dressing? Ranch flavored Lay's chips? Ranch BBQ sauce? Ranch WHAT?!!! Russian Apricot Chicken! Folks, THIS one is so good, he put it in the same book TWICE!!!! Lastly, the piece-de-resistance? Creamy Garlic Broccoli! Ingredients: 2 cans of cream of chicken soup [see a pattern developing here?] 4-6 pork chops, 1 packet of Ranch...no wait. That can't be right...same ingredients as the previous page of Ranch Pork Chops....except NO mention of Garlic....OR broccoli!!!? >:o

Somewhat misguided by thinking this was another crock-pot book by a similar name, I was VERY, very disappointed. Besides that, it was even still a BAD bargain, considering the booklet size, and not even from a new book selection.

Sweet and uplifting.

This book was written in the 1930's so the languge is sometimes kind of old fashion, but the messages are sweet and uplifting. Followers of Unity spirituality should enjoy and appreciate this little book of letters from Myrtle Filmore. Some of them touched me in a very personal way.

I have read quite a few of the Unity brochures but for some reason had missed out on some of these letters. Living with a chronic health problem I found Mrs Fillmore's letters to be uplifting as well as hopeful. I'm going to see if they will provide me with some healing of my own. I feel blessed to have found these!

This gives some insight as to the healing methods that she adopted and so tirelessly passed on to others. I only wish she'd written her own autobiography before she decided to pass on.:)
