Great Thriller By a Master of the Genre

Harlan Coben has a tendency to create mulitiple plot threads that never seem like they will ever come together. This book is no exception.

In his new book, Coben, explores a problem in today's society. Privacy. He explores how the internet changed everything. Now, that anyone can post anything they want about you and there isn't much you can do.

At the center of these themes is the Baye family (pronounced "by"). Mike and Tia have recently installed a spy program to keep an eye on their sixteen-year-old son, Adam. They do this after a friend of Adam has recently commited suicide. After a cryptic IM, Mike tries to keep Adam home but then he runs away. So begins the search for the teenager. The search takes Mike into the seedy part of the Bronx.

Meanwhile, a killer is at large and killing what seems to be random women. The reason behind it all will keep you guessing until the end. Also, a patient of Mike and his partner needs a kidney transplant and the mother holds a devestating secret. A father tries to come to terms with the fact that he cannot keep his daughter from harm after a popular teacher embarrasses her in class. We also see the police working the killer's case.

All threads converge very nicely into a sweet bow. Some are a little too forced but all in all, the suspense never relents and Coben once again keeps you guessing until the very end when the final secret is revealed.

A complex jigsaw that marks a change of pace

Harlan Coben specializes in writing intricate and suspenseful mysteries that keep you turning pages late into the night. His first (and to my mind, his best) standalone murder mystery was "Tell No One". Since then he has written several more novels which have been increasingly similar in plot. I was pleasantly surprised that "Hold Tight" marks a departure in formula, in that it doesn't center on an ancient murder case or the long ago disappearance of a family member. While this does mean that the book struggles a little to find its own momentum, at least Coben is trying something different instead of giving us more of the same.

"Hold Tight" juggles a number of different stories, all of which in some way center on the theme of parents trying to protect and/or understand their children. While initially they seem to be quite disparate plotlines, eventually the connections between them become apparent and it is this process of putting the jigsaw pieces together that is the most satisfying part of reading "Hold Tight". One of the things that I really like about Harlan Coben's writing is that there are never any loose ends or things that get left unexplained.

"Hold Tight" is a little slower in pace than his other novels and at times it gets confusing keeping track of so many people, but it's still is a satisfying mystery that keeps the suspense going right until the final pages.

an excellent read

I have read all of Harlan Coben's books - I was totally addicted to Myron, Win & Esperanza and at first, was disappointed that his new books did not include these favorite characters. But once I read the first non-Myron book, I had a different opinion about Coben's literary skills. I believe he not only develops interesting and pertinent plots and subplots, but does so with a commanding literary skill. I do not believe the Myron books were as skillfully written as his recent books.

I could not put this book down once I started reading. It took hold within the first pages and I felt this is the best book he has written. I especially like how he develops subplots that seamlessly come together until there is only one plot. I also like the way he chose a topic that is very prevalent to every parent today - internet, text messaging. Before the advent of this technology it was easier to keep track of your child/teenager without totally invading their privacy. With this technology, it becomes almost impossible to know what your child is doing.
I can't wait for his next book! or the TV series being developed on Myron.

Great book!

This was exactly what my hubby and I were looking for to help spice up our sex life. Lots of new and fun ideas. I'm not very creative nor adventurous, so doing these "exercises" has stretched me beyond my comfort zone more than a few times. But it has been so good for us as a couple.

This is an amazing book! A must get for all couples out there! I was at first very skeptical, thinking that it had some outrageous ideas that required acrobatics and/or whips and chains...with maybe a tolerance for pain. However, after reading several reviews, I decided to give it a try...and I love it. My husband ADORES it! :) Let me assure you that it doesn't require any special moves or any tolerance for pain (red rooms of pain are not my thing at all). All that it requires is you being willing to try some new things out...and some confidence.

After sixteen years of struggling with the lies and stories of three addicted children I knew I must have endured for a reason. That reason.... to help others to figure out what it happening to their friend or loved one and offer advice. I wrote the book for this purpose.

About the Author

Robert L. (Bob) Mitchell is a vice president of quality assurance and regulatory affairs for a major medical device company in Orange County, California. Along with his wife of thirtytwo years, he raised three children in a solid Christian home, each of whom experimented with and were addicted to drugs for a time. Bob now has two children and four grandchildren. Bob and his wife Angie were always involved in church and both of their boys achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. This story is evidence of how drugs and addiction know no boundaries. It could be your story. Bob prays that it is not.

An eye-opener! Couldn't put it down!!!

I'm a career-mom of 2 young children and reading this book was such an eye-opener for me and my husband! The author was so candid, telling it like it is, what it's really like to be around and to love addicted children. The end of each chapter had a "lessons learned" section that was so helpful for reiterating all those key points I didn't want to forget. Raising kids in a good, moral Christian home, being in good schools & neighborhoods with extremely devoted parents, still didn't protect their family from the evil of drug addiction. I am so glad I read this book while my kids are still young.

I was so touched by the love these parents had for their children going on the 'front lines' to help them. It was also so reaffirming to read the author's connection to the spiritual aspect of all the lessons their family endured.

The author's account in Chapter 6 was so vivid, I felt like I was there in that garage too. I simply couldn't put the book down! Having Hannah's personal account in this book was so important...seeing things from her perspective - it made my reading experience even more real. I am rooting for Hannah and I hope we will get a readers' update on her success story.

So many lives can be saved & changed by reading this book. I strongly recommend it to anyone but especially for parents of younger children who may not have any issues yet but who can benefit from the guidance and insight this book offers.

but I was totally pleased to see how their faith sustained them

This book tells a life story that should be a novel. Once you start reading it, you will keep reading to find out what happens. The eye opening part of this book is that it is true life story of a Christian family whose 3 children found their way into drug abuse. I thank God that has a parent of grown children I never had to experience the tragedy of this book, but I was totally pleased to see how their faith sustained them, and shows there is hope in any terrible life event, if you trust in God. Every parent of young children should read this, or if you have a drug abuse problem. Also if you are a person of faith, this book will build that faith. Thank you Bob and Hannah for taking on this difficult task, and creating such a wonderful book

I'm not for sure about this book. I got it for my daughter for her college classes that she sent me a list of books she needs for the up coming semester in the winter for her spring classes. I'm guessing she likes it. She getting good grades in the class and hasn't said anything to me about any problems with the book.

Fascinating

This is not a typical I-went-here-and-found-this travel book. It focuses heavily on wildlife, especially the author's underwater adventures. It not only describes the country and its people and cuisine, but interesting tidbits, for example, about medicines found in the forests (or underwater) there.
I just finished this book and found every chapter interesting. The author goes to places she describes as "unpronounceable, unknown and virtually unreachable." The chronicle of her voyages is compulsively readable and you look forward to her next venture, say to Kapingamarangi, and sharing it with her.
I also enjoyed the photos and quotes about travel.

Excellent Resource

I'm using this book to study for my ACE Certified Personal Trainer exam. I had previously read books from ACSM and NSCA and although the material is very similar, what I like about this book is that each chapter has questions at the end to test your knowledge, so you can go back and zero in on your areas of weakness. One review stated that ACE is "all about money"...WRONG...ACE is the only not-for-profit certification organization out there, and is consistently rated as one of the top 5 Certified Personal Trainer certifications in the nation. The book is very technical, and there is ALOT of terminology, not unlike the other books I've read on exercise science/physiology. ACE may not be the most prestigious CPT out there, but their study system is alot more structured than ACSM and NSCA which basically gives you books and leaves you on your own. Material is up-to-date, and based on research. It's dry reading in the sense that you'll wonder why you even have to know some of the material, but nonetheless, it is very informative. I have taken graduate-level courses in Health and Fitness and this book is just as good as the books used in my classes.

ACE, the WORST - Read before you waste your time with ACE Books

Ace offers the worst studying system that I have ever tried. Their manual is a joke...

Always avoid ACE Books/Manuals if you are trying to become a personal trainer. Why?

1.The material they offer will not help you with the test.
2.Their customer support is just a front so they can get you to buy more.
3.Money is their number 1 priority, therefore their products & services stink.
4.Confusing and unprofessional writing. If they want to sell books, they should hire a real writer.
5.After you purchase this you will feel cheated big time.

One of the only detailed book on the subject.

I have had a very hard time finding technical books on the subject, and so far, this is the only one I could find. There is a lot of content and very interesting examples. The pictures and diagrams are good and efficiently support the text. I wish some chapters were a little more practical, but overall, this is (one of) the most detailed book out there. I recommend this book to anyone interested in spacecraft computers.
