I am still reading this book on my kindle and find it every intersting. I have heard the "Confucius said" all my life but never really knew much about him. This book tells about his life, his students and the things the Master taught his students. I would recomend it for all who are interrested in the religion he taught as well as his belief.

Not current fashion, but...

This is the translation by Leonard A. Lyall, from 1909. As such, it uses the older Wade-Giles romanization. I prefer Ames & Rosemont from more recent translations, but this is very representative of its turn-of-the-20th-century type.

Ancient wisdom

The truth, scholars emphasize, is the truth, no matter what its source, even if the speaker is of a different race, religion, sex, or culture. This being true, people should pay attention to The Sayings of Confucius.

Confucius was born in 550 BCE. The Jesuits who carried his teachings to Europe called him Confucius, although his name was K'ung Fu-tzu. This book's introduction describes his turbulent time and the people and rulers of the period. It was a time when the country was broken into independent empires, each virtually powerless. Confucius held some government positions, but spent his later years in study and teaching, and gained many disciples. He studied history with the hope that he could find a way to help his people and country, and wrote books called Book of History and Spring and Autumn, and edited Book of Poetry. He died in 479 BCE at age 71.

Confucius did not write The Sayings of Confucius. Some scholars think that it was composed by a disciple of his based on what his teacher actually said. However, there are passages that speak of events long after his death. The general consensus is that the book was composed by students or admirers around 400 BCE. The following are a sample of sayings:

* Smooth words and fawning looks are seldom found with love.
* Put faithfulness and truth first; have no friends unlike thyself; be not ashamed to mend thy ways.
* A gentleman that does not seek to eat his fill...may be said to love learning.
* Not to be known is no sorrow. My sorrow is not knowing men.
* A gentleman puts words into action first, and follows them with words.
* Learning without thought is naught; thought without learning is dangerous.
* To know what we know, and know what we do not know, is wisdom.

Not all of the sayings are wise; some are trite. There is some repetition of thoughts told with different words. Some thoughts are difficult to understand. But these facts should not stop people from reading the book and gainig new ideas.

Dr. Sharif Mowlabocus' work Gaydar Culture shows us the transformative impact of the Internet upon a very particular minority culture, and in doing so teaches us a great deal, not only about that culture, but about the Internet itself. The Internet has enabled many minority communities to come together in a context in which they are, often for the first time, in a majority.

The culture the author discusses is gay urban male culture, largely, though not entirely, as represented in England. This topic, of course, might alienate some potential readers. If such readers turn away, however, they will fail to understand a unique and substantial impact of the Internet which empowers many minority groups, not only gays.

On the whole, we think this an important contribution to Media Studies, and obviously to Gay Studies as well. Any reasonably open reader will find it extremely informative on both counts. Anyone with a serious interest in the impact of the Internet should also read it, and anyone with a gay friend or family member will find it offers many insights into a culture probably otherwise closed to them.

About the Author

Wayne Teasdale was a lay monk and best-selling author of The Mystic Heart: Discovering a Universal Spirituality in the World's Religions; Bede Griffiths: An Introduction to His Interspiritual Thought and A Monk in the World. As a member of the Bede Griffiths International Trust, Teasdale was an adjunct professor at DePaul University, Columbia College, and the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. Wayne Teasdale was coeditor of Awakening the Spirit, Inspiring the Soul: 30 Stories of Interspiritual Discovery.

Wonderfully Written, Authentic Spirituality

I was required to buy this book for a class I was taking at the university entitled "Religion and Music". My professor was Dr. Don Beck who is an expert on this topic and has produced both a published book and a cd of Hindu devotional music. The book came highly recommended from him, and now that I have read it I would wholeheartedly agree! This is a wonderful book regardless of what spiritual path you are on, and in particular if you are looking for a way to re-entergize your own practice. The book explains how one can use the power of mantra as a spiritual practice, and it is written by an author who has both a Christian and Hindu background. He thoughtfully incorporates aspects of many religious traditions to accomodate all readers, and he is thoroughly knowledgable on this subject. He writes clearly and simply, and at the same time he gets you excited about the subject matter.

Honestly, I thought this book was going to be filled with New Age fluff, but it offers genuine advice on how to practically get started with this wonderful practice of reciting mantras. I was pleasantly surprised, and I think anyone with an interest in deep religion or music will greatly enjoy this book.

I had the privilege of taking a workshop with Russill in the summer of 2004, which is how I was introduced to his work. His excellent book "The Yoga of Sound" has proved highly complementary to that experience, but it is also a powerful work with no trouble standing on its own.
Yoga has become extremely popular in the Western world, but the aspect of yoga that focuses on the power of sound - the power of mantra and chant - has not transfered as well from the realms of Hindu mysticism. The book explores the reasons for this and sets the practice of mantra in a wider context, adaptable not only to those from any religious and spiritual background but to the hectic pace of modern life. Mantra is brought further into a 21st-century setting through the accessible and fascinating discussions of quantum physics as they apply to sound. The book is also a practical manual, teaching the reader how to use yogic mantra with the help of an included CD.
Russill Paul is a truly gifted teacher, and his spirit of devotion and eagerness to share the joy of the power of mantra shine through in this beautifully written book.

Chanting is an art - and for those of us from a Western background, it can feel a bit otherworldy or "foreign". I have always been interested in chanting and mantras but too intimidated to try it.

Russill Paul has put together a book and CD set that helps to demystify chanting and make it more accessible for all audiences - no matter what your spiritual or ethnic background. This well written book clearly explains the basics and theories behind chanting - and it provides exercises to get you started immediately.

These exercises help anyone to begin chanting in a confident manner. I am tone deaf and have no musical talent whatsoever - yet I am able now to practice mantras with a keener ear. I am already feeling the effects! (Hindu mantras are believed to help with many issues from removing obstacles, spiritual advancement and even mundane problems.)

The Yoga of Sound is a practical book which can get you on your way to a daily mantra practice. I would also recommend the books by Thomas Ashley Farrand as a supplement to this book. That being said, Paul's book seems to be more complete and I felt more inspired by it.
