The starting point to understanding; and a treasure chest

This book is an ingenious collection of translations woven together, sometimes one line from one source with pages from another, to form a continuous homogeneous narrative using only original materials. Here history and theology become exciting and fascinating, and very real. There are no comments from the author, only authentic texts; yet thousands of mosaics fit together to form a true vision, a feeling that one has actually experienced the events and the ideas. The reader feels as if he has lived and seen several centuries of history first hand.
The book begins with passages from Doughty's "Arabia Deserta" to set the stage and then carries the reader from pre-Islamic times up to the Seljuks in the actual words of the historical players: prophets, peasants, believers, unbelievers. soldiers, princes, cooks, doctors, mystics, and miscreants. It should be read from beginning to end because the material builds upon itself. The book contains the cream: the most compelling, instructive, and genial passages from the original Arabic and Persian sources: fables, stories, poetry, speeches, history, theology, mysticism--even humor and all the spice of life. In a painless fashion the reader, even one without any background, begins to feel a familiarity with a civilization because he sees the first occurrence of an idea and its subsequent reappearance in changing times and places in an amazingly accessible way. Harun al-Rashid acts and reacts, utters statements, in an understandable context that the reader recognizes and "remembers" from centuries before because the reader was there when it all began. The reader is himself the continuity of consciousness as he sees cities rise and fall. The result is an extraordinary, rich education about the Islamic world in considerable depth achieved in a short time and very enjoyably. Indeed, it is a book to be read for pleasure and entertainment, a scholarly thousand and one nights.
Interspersed in the text is about 1/10th of the Koran in the best translation ever made, one which conveys mystery and beauty. Schroeder's "Muhammad's People" is a magisterial introduction to Arabs and the Islamic world. It is a sourcebook with a difference because of how all the material works together so successfully to make scholarship read like a gripping novel. It is an anthology of translations, some reworked by Schroeder. some translated by him for the first time but is nevertheless a work of genius in its own right by an author with remarkable insight and intelligence.

Muhammad's people

I bought this to read for a course I was taking on the three Abrahamic religions. I found the book not only informative ( how little most of us know about Islam!) but also very interesting and not difficult reading. It is not a text book. Although it is a long book, it does not have to be read all at once, for one chapter or topic does not depend upon another, and, indeed, it is good to read over a period of time, in order to be able to reflect upon each topic and how the Western World may -- or may not--regard it differently..

What was he thinking?

This is the most frustrating book I have purchased in years. It is supposed to be an anthology, but the author has taken bits and pieces from numerous previous writers and rewoven them into his version of history. Whether or not it is accurate and from "original sources" is difficult to determine, because he does not make clear exactly which parts come from whom. For example, I wanted to read the appendix on medicine, titled The Body and the Doctor. It is the equivalent of a chapter, all supposedly quotations, but here is his entire explanation of sources for the chapter: "From Sari's elegy on the physician Thabit ibn Qurra; Avicenna's Canon of Medicine (about 1000); Awfi's Collection of Tales; the thirteenth century Syrian physician Ibn Abi Usaybi'a; Clinical Observations by Razi(about 900); and from an elegy on the physician Ibn Masawayh (died 857). That is NOT how a serious scholar cites references.
The author's attempt was apparently personally meaningful for him. I cannot imagine why he did not properly present his references. If he had, his book would be useful.

I enjoyed this final installment in the Hidden trilogy

I enjoyed this final installment in the Hidden trilogy.

I liked how things turned out with the story lines the trilogy spun. I thoroughly enjoyed the character development of our main characters (along with a couple of minor ones).

I will say that there were several questions about the aftermath of everything that were left unsaid in this final book. I would ask the author to please strongly consider writing an epilogue to update this book with at the end. There were just so many unanswered questions.

Some of the questions I had were (SPOILER ALERT):

How did things go with Ryann's mother after the ending? Did she get better? Did she remember anything? Now that Ryann & her grandmother were welcome at Altum & would be visiting there often (and Ryann likely living there at times), will they let Ryann's mother in on the family's secret heritage? What will she know about Davis & all he did to them as well as how does she feel/react about the news if she's informed?

How did the Light Elves react to the news of Ryann's & Lad's engagement? Will she be accepted as Queen? Will they announce that she's only 1/4 human?

What will they do about Davis' right hand man, Audun? He is obviously just as bad (possibly worse?) as Davis.

What about Ryann's adopted father's relationship with her mother? If he was glamoured accidentally, will their relationship fizzle out once he begins drinking saol water as well? Or is he truly in love with her mother? Regardless of if their love is true or not, how will his behavior change once the glamour has worn off?

Good but I felt a bit dissapointed

I really loved this series but have to say I was slightly let down by the conclusion.

Spoiler alert****

I expected a little more at the end. It was a bit predictable and you essentially knew how it had to end it was just a matter of how it would happen. I felt like there was all this build up with Lad and Ryan and I expected a wedding or bonding at the end and got neither. Especially after all the confusion she had with her relationship with Nox. It just seemed a little disjointed and rushed for that last epilogue and I wanted more. I know it is young adult and there cant be too much but I needed something more than a proposal. Even if it had jumped ahead a year or two to include it.

A truly captivating love triangle, sometimes square, for this magical Elven story. Perfect for any age group, a sweet and inspiring young love story. This series has been exciting to read and must be read from the beginning. The novella, Sway, is an insight into Vancia's life - a great addition to the series. The author keeps you on your toes guessing who Ryann chooses and how the "big" plan goes down. These teenagers are making very adult decisions about the future of their people yet get to behave like the kids they are. The innocence in their actions mixed with the seriousness of their endeavor makes the story intriguing. The creativity behind the Light and Dark Elves is beautiful. Her storyline involves the power of addiction (not drugs), the influence of technology and the magical Saol water. The theme touches on many current topics and events, while having a little fun with pop culture (a few movie references might make you giggle). I needed to read a fun and powerful story, this was it. Thank you Ms. Patrick for sending a review copy my way.

The dramatic growth in computing power over recent years has been accompanied by the development of methods that help to solve these problems. The purpose of this book is to provide a practical guide to the skills required to put these techniques into practice.

Practical applications of the methods are illustrated using data on health from the British Health and Lifestyle Survey (HALS), the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS), the European Community Household Panel (ECHP), the US Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) and Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). There is a strong emphasis on applied work, illustrating the use of relevant computer software with code provided for Stata. Familiarity with the basic syntax and structure of Stata is assumed. The Stata code and extracts from the statistical output are embedded directly in the main text and explained at regular intervals.

The book is built around empirical case studies, rather than general theory, and the emphasis is on learning by example. It presents a detailed dissection of methods and results of some recent research papers written by the authors and their colleagues. Relevant methods are presented alongside the Stata code that can be used to implement them and the empirical results are discussed at each stage.

This text brings together the theory and application of health economics and econometrics, and will be a valuable reference for applied economists and students of health economics and applied econometrics.

Good Book with a Serious Problem

This is quite a good book with lots of interesting information and helpful Stata code. However, it has one serious flaw that seems to have been carried over from Jones' book "Applied Econometrics for Health Economists". That is, the present book makes extensive use of data from surveys. These surveys incorporate stratification, clustering, and -- presumably -- unequal probabilities of selection. Rather than taking the design characteristics into account, Jones and his coauthors analyze this data as if it came from a simple random sample. As a result, the estimates they derive are likely to be biased, with overstated significance levels. This is a shame, since it is quite easy in Stata to adjust estimates for the characteristics of sample design.

In today's multicultural and multireligious societies, humour and comedy often become the focus of controversy over alleged racist or offensive content, as shown, for instance, by the intense debate of Sacha Baron Cohen's characters Ali G and Borat, and the Prophet Muhammad cartoons published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten. Despite these intense debates, commentary on humour in the academy lacks a clear way of connecting the serious and the humorous, and a clear way of accounting for the serious impact of comic language. The absence of a developed 'serious' vocabulary with which to judge the humorous tends to encourage polarized debates, which fail to account for the paradoxes of humour. This book draws on the social theory of Zygmunt Baumann to examine the linguistic structure of humour, arguing that, as a form of language similar to metaphor, it is both unstable and unpredictable, and structurally prone to act rhetorically; that is, to be convincing. Deconstructing the dominant form of racism aimed at black people in the US, and that aimed at Asians in the UK, The Rhetoric of Racist Humour shows how racist humour expresses and supports racial stereotypes in the US and UK, while also exploring the forms of resistance presented by the humour of Black and Asian comedians to such stereotypes.
