12 Edition Review: Not a Guidebook but an excellent source of Real GMAT Questions

I started GMAT Club - online MBA community; my GMAT score is 750 (49, 42), and here are my thoughts about this book:

Strengths:
1. 907 real GMAT questions retired from past tests
2. Practice questions are organized by level of difficulty
3. Practice questions follow actual GMAT test patterns (it's great to have one's ear trained, esp. in verbal)
4. Contains a 100-question diagnostic test

Weaknesses:
1. Does not include any test-taking strategies
2. Though it has a few short review sections for each area, they are weak and very unfriendly
3. Questions are predominantly low to medium in difficulty which is often not representative of questions one encounters on the test
4. There is a 66% overlap with the previous version (11th edition)

* Why is this book valuable/must-have?
The Official Guide is published by the creators of the GMAT and therefore it is the only source of actual GMAT questions representative of what you will see on the test.

* Why is the book not sufficient by itself?
This Guide contains only questions and lacks insightful information about the test, a math/verbal concept review section, or any test-taking strategies. To get up to speed, you will need to get a study guide such as Kaplan Premier Program or Princeton Review's Cracking the GMAT Cat.

* How should this book be used?
This book should NOT be used as a study-guide. It is a collection of questions - think of it as a way to practice your test-taking strategies but not a way to learn them.

* What if I own a previous edition of this book?
If you have the 11th edition, the only difference between the two is 300 new questions, or about 30%. Most test-takers agree that 300 new questions is not a compelling enough reason to own both editions, as the 11th edition offers enough practice. If you do need additional practice questions, get the Math or Verbal workbooks instead as they each have 300 questions.

* What is a recommended study plan using The Official Guide?
There are a number of approaches that work - here is one that most find reasonable:

Step 1: Buy a GMAT Guide from Kaplan or Princeton Review. Get familiar with the test and brush up on fundamentals (math and grammar); also these books will give you a good base for test-taking and timing strategies.

Step 2: Take a GMAT Prep (2 free tests downloadable from MBA.com) - but don't waste these; these are free but very valuable tests. Take 1 after you go through the Guidebooks and save the second one for later. These tests will be representative of your GMAT score (plus/minus 40 points).

Step 3: (Optional - if you want a 650+ score) Get a specialized Math and/or Verbal workbook from Kaplan, the 8-book set form Manhattan GMAT and do a deep dive into the fundamentals - this is what will help you crack the test - solid knowledge of Math and Grammar.

Step 4: By now you should have a good understanding of question patterns, strategies, and timing. Start working on the Official Guide and honing your skills - this is especially important for Critical Reasoning questions that have certain unspoken patterns and rules that only the Official Guide offers - work through the questions to train your ear. Keep in mind that these questions are on the easier side if you are aiming for 650+.

OVERVIEW of OFFICIAL GUIDE

The Official Guides for GMAT Review contain retired real GMAT questions, and are an essential component of your GMAT preparations. The GMAC places questions in order of increasing difficulty, based on its assessment of difficulty. The Quantitative Official Guide has no overlap with questions in the main Official Guide.

The 2017 edition of this book contains 45 new questions out of the 300 total questions, representing 15% new content. These are new questions that we have not encountered before; they are not questions recycled from older GMAC resources. One formatting change in the 2017 edition is that all questions are now numbered from 1 to 300, whereas previously Problem Solving and Data Sufficiency were numbered independently.

PROBLEM SOLVING

This guide contains 176 Problem Solving questions. The GMAC classifies question difficulty into three categories as follows:
Easy – 85 (48%, 3 more than 2016)
Medium – 52 (30%, 5 fewer)
Hard – 39 (22%, 2 more)

The Problem Solving section contains 26 new questions, with difficulty of Easy / Medium / Hard as follows: 17 / 5 / 4. This is in lieu of 26 questions from the 2016 edition that have been removed, with difficulty of Easy / Medium / Hard as follows: 16 / 8 / 2. The GMAC has also downgraded two questions from Medium difficulty to Easy.

GMAT Genius classifies question difficulty into five categories. Our assessment skews slightly more towards the center, but contains notable differences from the GMAC. Our difficulty assessment is only 70.7% correlated with the GMAC’s assessment, clearly showing that there is subjectivity involved in assessing question difficulty. Here’s our breakdown:
Super Easy – 22 (13%, 1 fewer than 2016)
Easy – 56 (32%, 5 more)
Medium – 63 (36%, 4 fewer)
Hard – 28 (16%, same)
Very Hard – 7 (4%, same)

ONLINE INTERFACE

The book includes an access code (see inside back cover) that provides 12-month usage of an online version of this Official Guide. Since the GMAT is a computer-based test, we believe that it is advisable to work though the questions online. We recommend that you use Exam Mode rather than Practice Mode, since we recommend that students practice using timed question sets that replicate test day conditions.

The online practice interface has improved significantly from last year’s version. The publisher implemented most of our recommendations. In particular, note the following improvements:
1) The test interface more closely resembles GMATPrep.
2) Exam Mode is now default mode, and you cannot skip questions in Exam Mode.
3) The overview screen shows the number of questions answered and that remain unanswered, for each question type and difficulty level.
4) All questions now indicate the corresponding book number, for easier cross-referencing.
5) The system now has a significantly longer period before it logs-out your session.
6) All session timing is now fully accurate.

Our only significant concern with the online interface is that the system limits you to 10 saved sessions. Once you reach this limit, you must delete at least one saved session in order to keep practicing. But doing so puts all the questions from that saved session back into the unanswered question pool. As such, we recommend that you separately track which question types / difficulties you have already completed. Furthermore, we suggest completing all Easy questions in a maximum of 10 sessions, advancing to Medium questions in max 10 sessions, and finally focusing on the Hard questions in max 10 sessions towards the end of your prep.

If you have any suggestions for further improving the online interface, please let us know and we will pass your input on to the publisher of the Official Guides.

OTHER NOTES

The Official Guides are for practicing with real GMAT questions, not for learning the underlying concepts. The book contains a 40-page Math Review section that provides a very high-level overview of the math concepts tested on the GMAT. This math review will be highly inadequate except perhaps for the most advanced math students. We recommend that you use additional study materials to learn the math concepts.

Although all questions include answer explanations, many GMAT test takers are far from satisfied with these explanations. The explanations can be brief and hard-to-understand for non-advanced students. Furthermore, certain explanations are convoluted and overlook more efficient approaches.

CONCLUSIONS

The Quantitative Official Guide has two primary weaknesses, in our opinion:
1) An insufficient amount of difficult practice questions, particularly based on GMAT Genius’ assessment of difficulty
2) Math answer explanations that are too often either brief or convoluted

Despite these flaws, the Quantitative Official Guide is an essential source of GMAT practice, and nicely supplements the main GMAT Official Guide for additional practice questions. We believe that every GMAT aspirant must use this book (or the prior edition). For these reasons, we give this book a 5-star rating. For the best value, we recommend purchasing this book as part of The Official Guide to the GMAT Review 2017 Bundle + Question Bank + Video. If you already have the 2016 edition of this book, however, the replacement of 45 questions is not sufficient to make this book worth purchasing.

The Official Guide is published by the creators of the GMAT and therefore it is the only source of actual GMAT questions representative of what you will see on the test.

*** Why is the book not sufficient by itself?
This Guide contains only questions and lacks insightful information about the test, a math/verbal concept review section, or any test-taking strategies. To get up to speed, you will need to get a study guide such as Kaplan Premier Program or Manhattan GMAT's 8 guides.

*** How should this book be used?
This book should NOT be used as a study-guide. It is a collection of questions - think of it as a way to practice your test-taking strategies but not a way to learn them.

*** What if I own a previous edition of this book?
If you have the 12th edition, the only differences between the two are 157 new questions and IR section overview (there is an online companion for IR). Most test-takers agree that 157 new questions is not a compelling enough reason to own both editions, as the 12th edition offers enough practice. However, if you are taking the test after June 5th, you do want this book for the IR section.

*** What is a recommended study plan using The Official Guide?
There are a number of approaches that work - here is one that most find reasonable:

Step 1: Buy a GMAT Guide from Kaplan (will take about a month to cover it). Get familiar with the test and brush up on fundamentals (math and grammar); also these books will give you a good base for test-taking and timing strategies. This is enough for a 600-level score. I would also recommend to everyone to get GMAT Roadmap by MGMAT. It is a great book packed with common sense and student wisdom on how to best approach the GMAT.

Step 2: Take a GMAT Prep (2 free tests downloadable from MBA.com) - but don't waste these; these are free but very valuable tests. Take 1 after you go through the Guidebooks and save the second one for later. These tests will be representative of your GMAT score (plus/minus 40 points).

Step 3: (Optional - if you want a 650+ score) Get a specialized Math and/or Verbal workbook from Kaplan, the 8-book set form Manhattan GMAT, or Veritas Prep Guides and do a deep dive into the fundamentals - this is what will help you crack the test - solid knowledge of Math and Grammar. You should also look into the MGMAT Foundations of GMAT Verbal and MGMAT Foundations of GMAT Math.

Step 4: By now you should have a good understanding of question patterns, strategies, and timing. Start working on the Official Guide and honing your skills - this is especially important for Critical Reasoning questions that have certain unspoken patterns and rules that only the Official Guide offers - work through the questions to train your ear. Keep in mind that these questions are on the easier side if you are aiming for 650+.

*** What are some of the good study suggestions?
- Start with a practice test (diagnostic test)
- You need quality time. It is really the quality time (morning for some and evening for others) that provides the most retention and results
- Don't skip or move past a section until you're able to solve 90% of the questions correctly (timed of course). That is if you want 700+
- Never solve questions without timing yourself (unless it is quick drills)
- Don't jump into the hardest areas first - build confidence instead with what you know and can demonstrate progress at
- Start every new day with the review of what you have learned the day before
- Make notes for everything you cover - it helps tremendously to retain what you have learned even though you may never read them. The process of making notes is a very helpful learning experience. If nothing else works - use it
- Finally, your practice tests are a usually a very good indicator of your performance. If you are getting 600 on your practice tests, there is about a 2% chance that you will get a 700 score. Do not be surprised when you score on real test a 600

A surprisingly good read

Charles Beauclerk writes compellingly about the complex life of John Ogdon, one of the twentieth century's great pianists. Although I knew Mr. Ogdon well, as his treating psychiatrist during his period in the United States, I learned so much more in the reading of the official biography. Not a reader of biographies, I was anticipating a tedious read--a familiar subject written with from the familiar angle most biographers take. Not so. I was gripped by the material and by the writing from the very first chapter. about John's rendering of the impossibly difficult work of Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji at Queen Elizabeth Hall on 14 July 1988. Reading it was as if I were hearing the music itself. Familiar with Beauclerk's work from Shakepeare's Lost Kingdom (Grove Press, NY, 2010), I found Piano Man to surpass his brilliant narrative. It reminded me of when I first read F. Scott Fitzgerald in college.

Beauclerk walks the line between focusing on John's illness and his genius in such a way that one is left with a balanced view, no small task, since both were described in high relief throughout the book. The unsung heroism of Mrs. Ogdon received proper recognition, finally, as one can see the magnitude of her responsibilities with John as well as her sacrifices of her own career.

I learned a great deal about music generally in reading this book, as Beauclerk demonstrates an authoritative voice in describing
the encyclopedic musicology of Ogdon. The research into Ogdon's background, education and musical culture which went into
the book is staggering, yet remains informative and engaging throughout. I must thank Richard Ogdon for asking Mr. Beauclerk to do this monumental and highly readable biography.

JOHN OGDON: PHENOMENAL PIANIST, BRILLIANT YET DAMAGED MIND

First, this is an important story, well told. Although a musician, I missed Ogdon's glory days, and so finding out about his phenomenal abilities was a new story for me. It is also the story of Ogdon the person, so it is a sometimes achingly sad story. First, Instant fame, then over booking of concert appearances; poorly understood and always mentally fragile, leading a life that would have challenged and exhausted a physically and mentally robust person. Ogdon could do things on the piano like sight reading orchestral scores and playing them with deep understanding and polish at first go that left other musicians gasping. Remembering everything he ever played, Ogdon was ready to sit down and perform it publicly. Finding out just before a performance that it isn't going to be Brahmas One as he had thought, he was both able and happy to do Brahms Two on the spot. There were devoted friends, but no one who knew what to do for him,. You read of problems turning into disasters, not even the professionals knowing how to deal with them, always financial pressure, and you think what a waste . John the person comes through as amazingly intelligent, not just in music, and fundamentally good. He could express music as few pianists could to his listeners, he just couldn't speak for himself.

Og's life: complicated but well played

So much depth in so many biographies is limited by tangible access to the subject in a variety of ways, many quite insurmountable. Robert Caro overcame the problem by massive research when he didn't have access to Lyndon Johnson. Norman Sherry had short access to Graham Greene in later years but largely re-traced his steps and found most of his acquaintances and friends so he was thorough in his preparation and delivery in his multi-volume bio. Ronald White produced a relatively pithy but expansive enough biography to touch the heart and mind of the reader without all the mundane details which can bog down such an endless subject as the life of Lincoln.

A reason for reading bios is simply to try to arrive at some sort of conclusion on the question of how genius is derived, expressed and lived. Beauclerk approaches a nearly perfect answer in documenting the penultimate pianist and reader of music notations in the Life of John Ogdon. He was able to do this so remarkable well because he achieves incisive insight into the man, his music and his mind thanks to a penetrating understanding, nearly complete access to Og's friends, family and acquaintances and, most importantly, a relationship from his early years as a child to John Ogdon including a longstanding friendship with his son. The insights are astounding, I believe, many by example, parable or recalled and reconstructed quotes. Most biographers play the quavers (eighth notes), efficiently Beauclerk hits hemidemisemiquavers (sixty-fourths).

While there were many raucous and even rebarbative moments in the Life, Og's a truly loveable, cuddly personality in spite of the mental challenges. He had to be exceptionally frustrating to those around him and even conniving and impossible, yet his character and personality (how he'd shake hands of each orchestra member, or remember a fan from two decades before--including the songs performed and the venue, or his photographic memory of entire pieces not played for two decades before) prevailed. When examining Lincoln, Sakharov, Nixon, one finds remarkable feats of memories of texts, equations or foreign policy details respectively wrapped in strong personalities even with some deficiencies of their own.

The origins of Baby Og's genius: the piano roll conditioned him to sight read complex pieces of music at age six, hooks the reader immediately. How fascinating to see a chubby six year old perform gymnastic feats with his tiny arms on a large piano to play Chopin. His later triumphs in Soviet Union, stages the world over and even in impromptu sessions simply because he loved to play hold the reader. As an amateur musician I was captivated; as a fan of playing prog rock and sometimes obscure songs (King Crimson's Night Watch or Premiata Forneria Marconi's fascinating tunes or the music of Focus) I could immediately identify with Og's obsession with Busoni or Sorabji. Then to listen to them as played by Og after my trip to the library or you tube and to hear his own compositions, I was completely blown away. Og was the composition and the piano--a magical merger.

In spite of all the turmoil of his mental states, it was clear also he and his wife have here a love story as presented so carefully revealed by Beauclerk. The relationships he had with managers, caretakers and booking agents is so well done and gives a superb look into all the sturm und drang one finds in a recording and touring artist of Og's stature. How he succeeded so much and so long was amazing. Og's life was a complicated, but well played song.

I don't want to spoil the read by playing too many notes so, this is not just a book for musicians, no matter how limited their talent, or simply those interested in the mental challenges Og owned. It is a book to read for examining the question of genius and how it's formed. It's a superlative tribute to a great, maybe the greatest pianist, of all classical music and the people around him as related by Beauclerk, a most perspicacious and accomplished writer.

Many astral projection books give you procedures for getting out of body, which generally result in some success. Ultimately, though, many adventurers in consciousness become disappointed in experiences that fail to live up to their pre-conceived notions of what should be happening. This often happens, Kurt Leland suggests, because they lack the knowledge that would help them appreciate what their adventures actually do signify and also as a result of insufficiently developed inner-senses that would allow them to better perceive, remember and understand their experiences.

Leland borrows from Jane Robert's Seth materials in defining the inner senses as "the channels through which the entire composition of any plane is appreciated and actually maintained. " He emphasizes the importance of developing these senses in order to better perceive and understand adventures in consciousness related to dreaming, lucid dreaming, out of body states and psychic experiences. For example, well developed relational inner senses would allow one to perceive the presence of other entities, to determine their nature, communicate with them and to clearly understand their communications. In his book, Leland offers a range of exercises geared towards developing these inner senses.

Many projectors vaguely understand the notion of their own multi-dimensionality without realising that there are several vehicles of consciousness beyond the etheric and astral bodies, including, using the terms from Theosophy that Leland utilises, the mental, causal, buddhic, monadic and divine bodies. Leland's own experiences have convinced him that by mastering the various energy bodies and related planes, adventurers in consciousness grow in understanding and achieve a spiritual evolution that brings them ever closer to Source.

Thus, he argues for astral projection as a spiritual pursuit and endorses the understanding that many oneironauts eventually arrive at: that events in our physical plane lives, and the emotional and mental habits we develop in response to these, impact our adventures in consciousness. Continually seeking out new techniques and new tools for astral projection will not solve the problems of infrequent or short lucid experiences or inability to consistently direct those experiences along desired lines. Instead, adventurers can work towards greater flexibility of consciousness (a key idea in Leland's work), which can be facilitated through better understanding of dreams and through the use of the exercises aimed at developing the inner senses. This will lead to satisfaction of the true impulse that lies beneath the desires for such adventures in consciousness, which is, "to know who we are, how we fit into the universe, and whether we have a special mission or purpose to fulfill," (p.39).

The best psychic development and astral projection book there is!

Let me just say something about myself first: I have read no less than two hundred (yes, two hundred; if you include books that I've skimmed through for the content then that would make it no less than a thousand) books on psychic development, astral projection, magick, aura viewing, psychic healing, theosophy, angels, witchcraft and everything occult. Ok, to say that this is the BEST is exaggerating and unfair to all the other equally elucidating and insightful books available. But I say it is the best because it will not only give you more results, it gives you a holistic approach which, because other how-to books lack, will truly aid your spiritual growth.

Although the author draws on the knowledge of other authors like Jane Roberts and other theosophical authors, his approach is truly unique and his own. This book is unique, unlike most other books that are centred on the same few concepts of psychic development. If you're not meant to develop your psychic abilities, you won't be able to, because practices that truly open up your inner senses will NOT appeal to you. You would be drawn to practices that only yield results after a certain level of mental and emotional cultivation has been achieved (most direct psychic development exercises like crystal gazing, psychic reading, meditation for the purpose of psychic development, aura viewing, etc) and hence, aren't likely to succeed. I speak from experience. So, if you really think you are ready and sincerely desire to know the truth, to understand this world and to rise up to the higher planes, then read this book.

Fascinating, gentle, and confirming lessons.

In my meditation room I have two plants. Lovely things, really. I have no idea what they are, but I have had them placed one by the other for months. When I decided to craft a second meditation room in my basement, I took one plant with me and left the other in place upstairs. I wanted "live" things in both places. Oddly, I had a sense that the plants were saddened by the move. I know, I know, to the skeptical reader this all sounds like mush, and I even dismissed it as such. During my meditation times in each room, however, I kept sensing each plant making the request to be reunited with the other. Strange, I thought. I'm going all soft. I'm going all "illogical." Going all New Age.

But not really...

Today my copy of The Multidimensional Human came and I read a few chapters right away. Early on in the book Kurt deals with the idea of universal conscious nets among all living things: plants, animal, human, and inorganic. Suffice to say I'm only on chapter three of this book and so much of my odd, unexplainable life experiences now make sense. This is the most fascinating, gentle, and confirming book I've read in a very long time. Just in time.

And yes, the plants are back together now and I'm not New Age...rather Old Age I suspect. We'll see.

Sometimes in big Hollywood movies they’ll have these crazy chase scenes where somebody jumps or gets thrown from a moving car. The person hits the ground and rolls for a bit. Then they come to a stop and pop up and dust themselves off, like it was no big deal. Whenever I see that I think, That’s rubbish. Getting thrown out of a moving car hurts way worse than that.

I was nine years old when my mother threw me out of a moving car. It happened on a Sunday. I know it was on a Sunday because we were coming home from church, and every Sunday in my childhood meant church. We never missed church. My mother was—�and still is—� a deeply religious woman. Very Christian. Like indigenous peoples around the world, black South Africans adopted the religion of our colonizers. By “adopt” I mean it was forced on us. The white man was quite stern with the native. “You need to pray to Jesus,” he said. “Jesus will save you.” To which the native replied, “Well, we do need to be saved—�saved from you, but that’s beside the point. So let’s give this Jesus thing a shot.”

My whole family is religious, but where my mother was Team Jesus all the way, my grandmother balanced her Christian faith with the traditional Xhosa beliefs she’d grown up with, communicating with the spirits of our ancestors. For a long time I didn’t understand why so many black people had abandoned their indigenous faith for Christianity. But the more we went to church and the longer I sat in those pews the more I learned about how Christianity works: If you’re Native American and you pray to the wolves, you’re a savage. If you’re African and you pray to your ancestors, you’re a primitive. But when white people pray to a guy who turns water into wine, well, that’s just common sense.

My childhood involved church, or some form of church, at least four nights a week. Tuesday night was the prayer meeting. Wednesday night was Bible study. Thursday night was Youth church. Friday and Saturday we had off. (Time to sin!) Then on Sunday we went to church. Three churches, to be precise. The reason we went to three churches was because my mom said each church gave her something different. The first church offered jubilant praise of the Lord. The second church offered deep analysis of the scripture, which my mom loved. The third church offered passion and catharsis; it was a place where you truly felt the presence of the Holy Spirit inside you. Completely by coincidence, as we moved back and forth among these churches, I noticed that each one had its own distinct racial makeup: Jubilant church was mixed church. Analytical church was white church. And passionate, cathartic church, that was black church.

Mixed church was Rhema Bible Church. Rhema was one of those huge, super�modern, suburban megachurches. The pastor, Ray McCauley, was an ex-bodybuilder with a big smile and the personality of a cheerleader. Pastor Ray had competed in the 1974 Mr. Universe competition. He placed third. The winner that year was Arnold Schwarzenegger. Every week, Ray would be up onstage working really hard to make Jesus cool. There was arena-�style seating and a rock band jamming out with the latest Christian contemporary pop. Everyone sang along, and if you didn’t know the words that was okay because they were all right up there on the Jumbotron for you. It was Christian karaoke, basically. I always had a blast at mixed church.

White church was Rosebank Union in Sandton, a very white and wealthy part of Johannesburg. I loved white church because I didn’t actually have to go to the main service. My mom would go to that, and I would go to the youth side, to Sunday school. In Sunday school we got to read cool stories. Noah and the flood was obviously a favorite; I had a personal stake there. But I also loved the stories about Moses parting the Red Sea, David slaying Goliath, Jesus whipping the money changers in the temple.

I grew up in a home with very little exposure to popular culture. Boyz II Men were not allowed in my mother’s house. Songs about some guy grinding on a girl all night long? No, no, no. That was forbidden. I’d hear the other kids at school singing “End of the Road,” and I’d have no clue what was going on. I knew of these Boyz II Men, but I didn’t really know who they were. The only music I knew was from church: soaring, uplifting songs praising Jesus. It was the same with movies. My mom didn’t want my mind polluted by movies with sex and violence. So the Bible was my action movie. Samson was my superhero. He was my He-�Man. A guy beating a thousand people to death with the jawbone of a donkey? That’s pretty badass. Eventually you get to Paul writing letters to the Ephesians and it loses the plot, but the Old Testament and the Gospels? I could quote you anything from those pages, chapter and verse. There were Bible games and quizzes every week at white church, and I kicked everyone’s ass.

Then there was black church. There was always some kind of black church service going on somewhere, and we tried them all. In the township, that typically meant an outdoor, tent-�revival-�style church. We usually went to my grandmother’s church, an old-�school Methodist congregation, five hundred African grannies in blue-�and-�white blouses, clutching their Bibles and patiently burning in the hot African sun. Black church was rough, I won’t lie. No air-�conditioning. No lyrics up on Jumbotrons. And it lasted forever, three or four hours at least, which confused me because white church was only like an hour—�in and out, thanks for coming. But at black church I would sit there for what felt like an eternity, trying to figure out why time moved so slowly. Is it possible for time to actually stop? If so, why does it stop at black church and not at white church? I eventually decided black people needed more time with Jesus because we suffered more. “I’m here to fill up on my blessings for the week,” my mother used to say. The more time we spent at church, she reckoned, the more blessings we accrued, like a Starbucks Rewards Card.

Black church had one saving grace. If I could make it to the third or fourth hour I’d get to watch the pastor cast demons out of people. People possessed by demons would start running up and down the aisles like madmen, screaming in tongues. The ushers would tackle them, like bouncers at a club, and hold them down for the pastor. The pastor would grab their heads and violently shake them back and forth, shouting, “I cast out this spirit in the name of Jesus!” Some pastors were more violent than others, but what they all shared in common was that they wouldn’t stop until the demon was gone and the congregant had gone limp and collapsed on the stage. The person had to fall. Because if he didn’t fall that meant the demon was powerful and the pastor needed to come at him even harder. You could be a linebacker in the NFL. Didn’t matter. That pastor was taking you down. Good Lord, that was fun.

Christian karaoke, badass action stories, and violent faith healers—�man, I loved church. The thing I didn’t love was the lengths we had to go to in order to get to church. It was an epic slog. We lived in Eden Park, a tiny suburb way outside Johannesburg. It took us an hour to get to white church, another forty-�five minutes to get to mixed church, and another forty-�five minutes to drive out to Soweto for black church. Then, if that weren’t bad enough, some Sundays we’d double back to white church for a special evening service. By the time we finally got home at night, I’d collapse into bed.

This particular Sunday, the Sunday I was hurled from a moving car, started out like any other Sunday. My mother woke me up, made me porridge for breakfast. I took my bath while she dressed my baby brother Andrew, who was nine months old. Then we went out to the driveway, but once we were finally all strapped in and ready to go, the car wouldn’t start. My mom had this ancient, broken-�down, bright-�tangerine Volkswagen Beetle that she picked up for next to nothing. The reason she got it for next to nothing was because it was always breaking down. To this day I hate secondhand cars. Almost everything that’s ever gone wrong in my life I can trace back to a secondhand car. Secondhand cars made me get detention for being late for school. Secondhand cars left us hitchhiking on the side of the freeway. A secondhand car was also the reason my mom got married. If it hadn’t been for the Volkswagen that didn’t work, we never would have looked for the mechanic who became the husband who became the stepfather who became the man who tortured us for years and put a bullet in the back of my mother’s head—�I’ll take the new car with the warranty every time.

As much as I loved church, the idea of a nine-�hour slog, from mixed church to white church to black church then doubling back to white church again, was just too much to contemplate. It was bad enough in a car, but taking public transport would be twice as long and twice as hard. When the Volkswagen refused to start, inside my head I was praying, Please say we’ll just stay home. Please say we’ll just stay home. Then I glanced over to see the determined look on my mother’s face, her jaw set, and I knew I had a long day ahead of me.

“Come,” she said. “We’re going to catch minibuses.”

My mother is as stubborn as she is religious. Once her mind’s made up, that’s it. Indeed, obstacles that would normally lead a person to change their plans, like a car breaking down, only made her more determined to forge ahead.

“It’s the Devil,” she said about the stalled car. “The Devil doesn’t want us to go to church. That’s why we’ve got to catch minibuses.”

Whenever I found myself up against my mother’s faith-�based obstinacy, I would try, as respectfully as possible, to counter with an opposing point of view.

“Or,” I said, “the Lord knows that today we shouldn’t go to church, which is why he made sure the car wouldn’t start, so that we stay at home as a family and take a day of rest, because even the Lord rested.”

“Ah, that’s the Devil talking, Trevor.”

“No, because Jesus is in control, and if Jesus is in control and we pray to Jesus, he would let the car start, but he hasn’t, therefore—�”

“No, Trevor! Sometimes Jesus puts obstacles in your way to see if you overcome them. Like Job. This could be a test.”

“Ah! Yes, Mom. But the test could be to see if we’re willing to accept what has happened and stay at home and praise Jesus for his wisdom.”

“No. That’s the Devil talking. Now go change your clothes.”

“But Mom!”

“Trevor! Sun’qhela!”

Sun’qhela is a phrase with many shades of meaning. It says “don’t undermine me,” “don’t underestimate me,” and “just try me.” It’s a command and a threat, all at once. It’s a common thing for Xhosa parents to say to their kids. Any time I heard it I knew it meant the conversation was over, and if I uttered another word I was in for a hiding—�what we call a spanking.

At the time I attended a private Catholic school known as Maryvale College. I was the champion of the Maryvale sports day every single year, and my mother won the moms’ trophy every single year. Why? Because she was always chasing me to kick my ass, and I was always running not to get my ass kicked. Nobody ran like me and my mom. She wasn’t one of those “Come over here and get your hiding” type moms. She’d deliver it to you free of charge. She was a thrower, too. Whatever was next to her was coming at you. If it was something breakable, I had to catch it and put it down. If it broke, that would be my fault, too, and the ass-�kicking would be that much worse. If she threw a vase at me, I’d have to catch it, put it down, and then run. In a split second, I’d have to think, Is it valuable? Yes. Is it breakable? Yes. Catch it, put it down, now run.

We had a very Tom and Jerry relationship, me and my mom. She was the strict disciplinarian; I was naughty as shit. She would send me out to buy groceries, and I wouldn’t come right home because I’d be using the change from the milk and bread to play arcade games at the supermarket. I loved videogames. I was a master at Street Fighter. I could go forever on a single play. I’d drop a coin in, time would fly, and the next thing I knew there’d be a woman behind me with a belt. It was a race. I’d take off out the door and through the dusty streets of Eden Park, clambering over walls, ducking through backyards. It was a normal thing in our neighborhood. Everybody knew: that Trevor child would come through like a bat out of hell, and his mom would be right there behind him. She could go at a full sprint in high heels, but if she really wanted to come after me she had this thing where she’d kick her shoes off while still going at top speed. She’d do this weird move with her ankles and the heels would go flying and she wouldn’t even miss a step. That’s when I knew, Okay, she’s in turbo mode now.

When I was little she always caught me, but as I got older I got faster, and when speed failed her she’d use her wits. If I was about to get away she’d yell, “Stop! Thief!” She’d do this to her own child. In South Africa, nobody gets involved in other people’s business—unless it’s mob justice, and then everybody wants in. So she’d yell “Thief!” knowing it would bring the whole neighborhood out against me, and then I’d have strangers trying to grab me and tackle me, and I’d have to duck and dive and dodge them as well, all the while screaming, “I’m not a thief! I’m her son!”

The last thing I wanted to do that Sunday morning was climb into some crowded minibus, but the second I heard my mom say sun’qhela I knew my fate was sealed. She gathered up Andrew and we climbed out of the Volkswagen and went out to try to catch a ride.

A Treasure

I am generally a pretty critical reader, and it's almost embarrassing to write such a glowing review, but I can say without reservation that this book is a treasure. (And no, I am not a friend of the family. I haven't even watched him on The Daily Show, although I'll probably start to watch now.) Trevor Noah is a superb storyteller, and this memoir is his eloquent and touching account of growing up as the mixed race child of a single mother, living in poverty in deeply racist and sexist South Africa. He provides an inside look at a life very different from what almost anyone has experienced (due to his unusual ethnicity and upbringing), yet it is easy to relate to him and fascinating to read his stories. The book reads like a novel, but it is so much more affecting because it is true. Reminiscent of The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, it is a superbly written story of a perceptive and resilient child thriving in very difficult circumstances, and it beautifully captures these circumstances seen through the eyes of a child.

Trevor's mother taught him to use humor to help cope with life, and he learned that lesson well. Despite having good reasons for feeling self-pity and resentment, Trevor had a knack for finding the humor in even the most difficult circumstances. Not forced, jokey humor, but just a low-key appreciation for the weirdness of life. As I turned the last page, I smiled at the ending, which was perfect, but I also felt sad that the story ended. I want to know what happened next. I hope he will write a sequel.

Comedy out of Tragedy

My decision to request Born a Crime has nothing to do with star power or fandom. I have to admit I have never seen Trevor Noah on the Daily Show. I requested this book when I learned it was about Trevor Noah's childhood in Apartheid South Africa.

I started reading my ebook galley as soon as I was approved.

I have to love a guy who finds comedy in tragedy and who gleefully spins yarns about experiences that would keep most of us in therapy for a lifetime. There is a genius in comedy that allows us to encounter devastating truths through the protective lens of laughter.

The heroine of the book is Noah's mother, a feisty lady with a solid rock faith, a gal who snubs her nose at things that don't make sense. She makes mistakes, but always out of love. She takes huge risks but somehow Jesus is always there to catch her mid-fall.

Noah was "naughty as s***" and a challenge to raise, but never hateful or mean. He learned to navigate Apartheid society's complex system that divided people in to three groups: black, white, and colored. How one was categorized was senseless. Japanese were put into the 'white' slot but Chinese into the 'colored'.

"The genius of Apartheid was convincing people who were the overwhelming majority to turn on each other. Apart hate, is what is was."

Noah was 'colored' with a 'black' Xhosa African mother and a 'white' Swiss father, his very existence implicating his parent's crime. Had the police discovered them, his parents would be sent to jail and Noah sent to an orphanage. He spent much of his life hidden away, indoors. His parents could not be seen together with him, and his mother had to even pretend he was not her child.

Noah was "colored by complexion but not by culture." He spoke multiple languages, Xhosa and Zulu and Afrikaans, and English, could fit into most groups, but felt affiliated to black culture.

The book is a series of episodic tales, thoughtfully constructed, saving the climax of his family history until the end of the book, after we have come to know and understand them.

"I saw the futility of violence, the cycle that just repeats itself, the damage that's inflicted on people that they in turn inflict on others. I saw, more than anything, that relationships are not sustained by violence, but by love."

The book is funny but is more than a diversive read, it enlarges our understanding of the world. Noah offers an understanding of South African history, colonialism, and Apartheid that is engaging and relevant. He shares the important things he learned and offers them to us. We should listen. We should learn.

A Story of Resilience

It's hard to imagine a childhood like Trevor Noah 's, although there are probably many others who have similar stories. It is a credit to this man for surviving this impossible beginning, but the truest measure of his character is in his realization that the hero of the story was really his mother. Noah 's book will inspire others and will serve as a true witness to the powers of resilience. One can only wish that all children who are dealing with such trauma can find strength and support through examples such as Noah 's.
