Darth Bane, the only Sith Lord to escape the devastation of Kaan’s thought bomb, marched quickly under a pale yellow Ruusan sun, moving steadily across the bleak, war-torn landscape. He was two meters tall, and his black boots covered the ground in long, sweeping strides, propelling his large, powerfully muscled frame with a sense of urgent purpose. There was an air of menace about him, accentuated by his shaved head, his heavy brow, and the dark intensity of his eyes. This, even more than his forbidding black armor or the sinister hook-handled lightsaber dangling from his belt, marked him as a man of fearsome power: a true champion of the dark side of the Force.

His thick jaw was set in grim determination against the pain that flared up every few minutes at the back of his bare skull. He had been many kilometers away from the thought bomb when it detonated, but even at that range he had felt its power reverberating through the Force. The aftereffects lingered, sporadic bursts shooting through his brain like a million tiny knives stabbing at the dark recesses of his mind. He had expected these attacks to fade over time, but in the hours since the blast, their frequency and intensity had steadily increased.

He could have called on the Force to keep the pain at bay, cloaking himself in an aura of healing energy. But that was the way of the Jedi, and Bane was a Dark Lord of the Sith. He walked a different path, one that embraced suffering, drawing strength from the ordeal. He transformed the pain into anger and hate, feeding the flames of the dark side until his physical aspect seemed almost to glow with the fury of a storm it could barely contain.

The terrifying image Bane projected contrasted sharply with the small figure that followed in his wake, struggling to keep up. Zannah was only ten, a waif of a girl with short, curly blond hair. Her clothing was simple and plain to the point of being rustic: a loose-fitting white shirt and faded blue coveralls, both torn and stained from weeks of continuous wear. Anyone who saw her scampering along after Bane’s massive, black-clad form would have been hard-pressed to imagine she was the Sith Master’s chosen apprentice. But looks could be deceiving.

There was power in the child. He’d seen ample proof of that at their first meeting, less than an hour earlier. Two nameless Jedi were dead by her hand. Bane didn’t know all the details surrounding their deaths; he had arrived after the fact to find Zannah crying over the body of a bouncer, one of the telepathic, green-furred species native to Ruusan. The still-warm corpses of the Jedi had been sprawled beside her, their heads lolling at grotesque angles atop broken necks.

Clearly the bouncer had been the child’s friend and companion. Bane surmised that the Jedi must have inadvertently killed the bouncer, only to meet a similar fate when Zannah exacted her revenge. Unaware of her power, they’d been caught off guard when the child—driven by mind-numbing grief and pure, abject hatred—had unleashed the full fury of the dark side on the men who’d slain her friend.

They were victims of cruel misfortune: in the wrong place at the wrong time. Yet it would have been inaccurate to call their deaths pointless. In Bane’s eyes, at least, their sacrifice had allowed him to recognize the young girl’s potential. To some the series of events would have seemed preordained, as if the hapless Jedi had been inexorably drawn to their grim end with the sole purpose of uniting Bane and Zannah. No doubt there were even those who would profess that fate and the dark side of the Force had conspired to present the Master with a suitable apprentice. Bane, however, was not one of them.

He believed in the power of the Force, but he also believed in himself: He was more than just a servant of prophecy or a pawn of the dark side, subject to the whims of an inevitable, inescapable future. The Force was a tool he had used to forge his own destiny through strength and cunning. He alone among the Sith had truly earned the mantle of Dark Lord, which was why he alone among them still lived. And if Zannah was worthy of being his apprentice, she would eventually have to prove herself, as well.

He heard a grunt behind him and turned back to see that the girl had tumbled to the ground, falling in her haste to try to keep up with the relentless pace he’d set. She glared at him, anger etched across her features.

“Slow down!” she snapped. “You’re going too fast!”

Bane clenched his teeth as a fresh bolt of pain ripped through his skull. “I am not going too fast,” he replied, keeping his voice even but stern. “You are going too slow. You must find a way to keep up.”

She scrambled to her feet, swatting at the scuffed knees of her overalls to wipe away the most obvious traces of dirt. “My legs aren’t as long as yours,” she replied crossly, refusing to back down. “How am I supposed to keep up?”

The girl had spirit. That had been clear from the moment of their first meeting. She had recognized Bane instantly for what he was: one of the Sith, sworn enemy of the Jedi, a servant of the dark side. Yet she had shown no fear. In Zannah, Bane had seen the potential for the successor he needed, but she had obviously seen something she wanted in him, too. And when he had offered her the chance to be his apprentice, to study and learn the ways of the dark side, she hadn’t hesitated.

He wasn’t yet certain why Zanah had been so eager to ally herself with a Lord of the Sith. It could have been a simple act of desperation: She was alone, with nowhere else to turn for her survival. Or maybe she saw the dark side as a path to vengeance against the Jedi, a way to make them all suffer for the death of her bouncer friend. It was even possible she had simply sensed Bane’s power and lusted to claim it as her own.

Whatever her true motivations, Zannah had been more than willing to swear fealty to the Sith and her new Master. However, it was neither her spirit nor her willingness that made her worthy of being his apprentice. The Dark Lord had chosen her for one reason, and one reason only.

“You are strong in the Force,” he explained, his voice still betraying no hint of emotion or the agony he endured. “You must learn to use it. To call on its power. To bend it to your purpose. As you did when you killed the Jedi.”

He saw a flicker of doubt cross her face. “I don’t know how I did that,” she muttered. “I didn’t even mean to do it,” she continued, suddenly uncertain. “It just sort of . . . happened.”

Bane detected a hint of guilt in her voice. He was disappointed, but hardly surprised. She was young. Confused. She couldn’t truly understand what she had done. Not yet.

“Nothing just happens,” he insisted. “You called upon the power of the Force. Think back to how you did it. Think back to what happened.”

She hesitated, then shook her head. “I don’t want to,” she whispered.

The girl had already endured immeasurable pain and suffering since her arrival on Ruusan. She had no wish to revisit those awful experiences. Bane understood; he even sympathized with her. He, too, had suffered during his childhood, a victim of countless savage beatings at the hands of Hurst, his cruel and abusive father. But he had learned to use those memories to his advantage. If Zannah was to become the heir to the dark side’s legacy, she had to confront her past. She had to learn how to draw upon her most painful memories. She had to transform and channel them to allow her to wield the power of the dark side.

“You feel sorry for those Jedi now,” Bane said, his voice casual. “You feel regret. Remorse. Maybe even pity.” The easy tone fell away quickly as his voice began to rise in both volume and intensity. “But these are worthless emotions. They mean nothing. What you need to feel is anger!”

He took a sudden step toward her, his right fist clenched before him to punctuate his words. Zannah flinched at the unexpected movement, but didn’t retreat.

“Their deaths were not an accident!” he shouted as he took another step forward. “What happened was not some mistake!”

A third step brought him so close that the shadow of his massive frame enveloped the girl like an eclipse. She cowered slightly but held her ground. Bane froze, blocking out the pain in the back of his skull and reining in his fury. He crouched down beside her and relaxed his clenched fist. Then he reached out slowly with his hand and placed it gently on her shoulder.

“Think back to what you felt when you unleashed your power against them,” he said, his voice now a soft, seductive whisper. “Think back to what you felt when the Jedi murdered your friend.”

Zannah dropped her head, her eyes closed. For several seconds she was still and silent, forcing her mind to relive the moment. Bane saw the emotions crossing her face: grief, sorrow, loss. Beneath his massive hand on her frail shoulder, she trembled slightly. Then, slowly, he felt her anger begin to rise. And with it, the power of the dark side.

When the girl looked up again her eyes were open wide; they burned with a fierce intensity. “They killed Laa,” she spat. “They deserved to die!”

“Good.” Bane let his hand fall from her shoulder and took a step back, the hint of a satisfied smile playing across his lips. “Feel the anger. Welcome it. Embrace it.

“Through passion, I gain strength,” he continued, reciting from the Code of the Sith. “Through strength, I gain power.”

“Through passion, I gain strength,” she said, repeating his words, responding to them. “Through strength, I gain power.” He could sense the dark side building within her, growing in intensity until he could almost feel its heat.

“The Jedi died because they were weak,” he said, taking a step back. “Only the strong survive, and the Force will make you strong.” As he turned away, he added, “Use it to keep up. If you fall behind again, I will leave you here on this world.”

“But you still haven’t told me what to do!” she shouted after him as he marched away.

Bane didn’t reply. He’d given her the answer, though she didn’t know it yet. If she was worthy of being his apprentice, she’d figure it out.

The problem is the inclusion of a fairly weak characters who take up more pages than they're worth but they get an ending befitt

Strong read altogether. The ending makes you eager to read the 3rd but that one's a bit of a let down.

The problem is the inclusion of a fairly weak characters who take up more pages than they're worth but they get an ending befitting of the amount of time wasted reading about them.

The two main characters keep you reading on and by the end you have a swelling of satisfaction that you're time was well spent. Seeing Bane's transformation from the 1st book to the 2nd falls happily in line with what one would expect of THE Sith Lord. You may find yourself rushing through the parts that don't involve him to savor the one's that do.

Unfortunately there are parts of the story where you'll be left slightly puzzled and asking "why?" but they're redeemed by the aforementioned.

My thoughts on the Trilogy as a whole

I've only read 6 of the expanded universe novels, the Thrawn trilogy and now the Darth Bane trilogy. I started with the Thrawn series as it seemed to come the most highly recommended of all the star wars novels. I read the trilogy, and was sorely disappointed. The story was grand and epic, and the entire universe is at stake again, but the characters were boring and flat. The characters from the movies like Luke, Han, Lei, etc, were just shadows of the movies, with no new character development, often repeating their iconic lines from the movies with sort of a wink and a nod to the reader. A lot of the plot devices from the Thrawn trilogy were cheap and lazy. The only remotely interesting character was Mara Jade, and she was poorly executed most of the time. I thought to myself, if this is the best the best of the star wars books, then we are in trouble.

I searched out a different story, hoping it would redeem the poor effort of the Thrawn series, and I decided to give the first novel of the Darth Bane series a shot. I always though the dark side of the force was lacking in depth from the movies, and I wanted to see if anyone was capable of giving that angle new life. I'm very pleased to report that the Darth Bane trilogy is far more compelling, and is overall a really great story. In contrast to the Thrawn trilogy, the physical scope of the novel is far more narrow. The galaxy is not in any immediate danger after the conclusion of the first novel, and there are no clone armies threatening to destroy the republic and there is no death star blowing up planets. This trilogy is all about the small first steps the Sith will take to the eventual galactic domination that culminates in episode III, and thus the action is far more focused and localized to discrete areas of the Star Wars galaxy. Bravo to the author for not falling into the trap of bigger is better.

I won't launch into an exhaustive review, but suffice to say, the main characters are very dynamic and interesting. Bane is obviously the main focus of the novels, and getting to see the transformation that he undergoes really gives you a better sense of what Yoda and the crew were fighting against. From the movies, you sometimes get the sense the dark side of the force is just lightning bolts and intimidating names. This series really delves into the philosophy of the Sith, and how it is so different from the Jedi, and gives you a better idea of what powers the dark side offers, besides silly lightning bolts. The story moves at a great pace, and the story itself falls into place without the need to rely on the cheap plot devices that I detested in the Thrawn trilogy. This is a far more subtle and nuanced trilogy.

I'm giving the trilogy a 5 because the characters are very compelling and the story feels like a cornerstone to the whole Star Wars universe. It's not perfect, of course, but it's a very strong trilogy that is definitely worth a read.

It is a shame that "Path of Destruction" & its follow-up "Rule of Two" will never make it to the big screen, these would be awesome films, this one picks up ten years after "Path of Destruction" where Darth Bane is now the last Sith Lord whose Apprentice Zannah, who was a child in the last book is now a young woman & very loyal to her Master as well as ruthless in her pursuit to follow in Bane's footsteps, the Jedi believe the Sith to be extinct by now & Bane & Zannah continue this charade while harnessing the power of the dark side, one Jedi Johun is skeptical when folks on the planet Ruusan where many Jedi & the last Sith Lords perished in the last book tell him about Bane & Zannah, however his Master Farfalla & the counsel dismiss it as far-fetched that is until Zannah's childhood friend agrees to tell the counsel personally at the urging of Johun, unbeknownst to them, Zannah goes to Courasaunt on Bane's orders to impersonate a Padewan in an attempt to seize some Jedi achives on the Siths of the past, which the Jedi has secretly secured & here she crosses paths with her childhood friend who she persudes to leave with her once she learns what he is doing there, when she meets up with Bane, the Jedi have followed them & what results is one fierce long battle as Zannah takes on two Jedi, one being Johun & Bane two others, one being Farfalla in a fierce showdown, with a Hammerhead Jedi meditating to give the others strong enough power, I won't spoil the ending here, but this is one great book & Darth Bane plants the seeds that Palpatine will carry out 1,000 years later in the Prequel films as he believes that deception is the only way to destroy the Jedi, which we know Palpatine will be successful at doing later, as I said in my review of "Path of Destruction" I think Vin Diesel(Fast & Furious) would be a perfect Bane in a film version & Amanda Seyfried(Red Riding Hood) would be perfect as Zannah, she has that innocent but demure look that the character has, plus these two are still not that well known , maybe Sam Neill as Farfalla & Channing Taum as Johun, anytime I read book, I picture actors in the role, & these would be my picks, I know it will never happen, but who says we can't wish, however, the Darth Bane books are a must read for SW fans, now I am off to read the last one "Dynasty of Evil"..

This Book Helped Win World War I I

The Seventh Edition of this 4-inch x 7-inch x 2-inches-thick book of 1,366 pages was published in 1940 by the McGraw-Hill book company from the writings and collections of authors Fred H. Colvin and Frank A. Stanley.

This book was used by virtually all American Machinists in every WWII production industry. It provided all those fine folks with a common reference point on which most all bombs, jeeps, airplanes, locomotives, ships, boilers, guns, trucks, tanks, boats, motors and many more items were built.

The First Edition was published by the same authors in 1908. Thirty-two years later the two authors published the Seventh Edition. A 75-page Dictionary of Shop Terms preceeds the 37-page Index. The 14-page Table of Contents fully identifies the contents of each of the 27 Sections in the book.

I use the book every day in my cabinet making efforts and have not yet found any obsolete information. Those more knowledgeable about Section XXVI's railroad shop data ( all steam related ) may not be as lucky as I am with THIS STUNNING GEM OF A BOOK.

The world owes an incalculable debt to authors Fred Colvin and Frank Stanley for their exquisite amalgamation of soooooo much information into a book that fits in a (larger) pocket.

If one would ever have a chance to see or own one of the 25,000 published in the 1940 Seventh Edition, then I would calculate that one is very fortunate indeed !

Professors de Neufville and Odani use real world examples to convincingly show the context for airport planning and design is changing fundamentally. No longer limited to technical aspects in the 21st Century, airport planners and designers should cultivate new and critical thinking on such issues as profitability, revenues, and user services. The authors have taught airport system planning both at MIT and to airport professionals for a quarter century. Both have served as consultants to airports and civil aviation organizations, worldwide. From this extensive experience, they provide excellent guidance to a wide audience.

FAA Advisory Circulars and ICAO Design Manuals contain general airport planning and design standards. The thrust of the authors’ approach is that the new context for airport system planning is commercial, no longer limited to narrow technical aspects. Influences such as airline deregulation, airport and airline privatization, a global airport industry, and advanced technology (electronic commerce in particular) require this new approach. The framework more widely concentrates on costs and revenues, stochastic traffic and risks, and operations and management.

The authors focus on large and medium size commercial airports. They write in simple language, devoid of intimidating technical jargons. Airports, worldwide, are used as examples and case studies to clarify the analysis. The authors served as consultants at many of the airports used as examples. For those interested in forecasting and simulation models and traffic flows and queuing, there is a separate "reference material."

To consultant planners in airport planning and design firms and to those in public aviation organizations, the book provides a wealth of knowledge on all aspects of airport planning, design, and management. It encourages cultivating a new way of thinking about the issues, to avoid costly and embarrassing mistakes. The book gives valuable guidance to city and regional planners for making informed, rational decisions regarding fiscal and environmental implications of airport development projects in their communities.

The System Planning section presents an insightful discussion of airport master planning, multi airport system, and strategic planning processes. Planners have been part of these programs, funded by the FAA, since the early 1970s. The section points out the reactionary and inflexible features of master plans with a static vision of the future. It cautions planners and managers that strategic planning as practiced in business has also fallen out of favor. Planners and managers will find the lively discussion on shortcomings of forecasts, a valuable eye-opener. It documents that "forecasts are always wrong and unreliable"; therefore, plans based on wrong forecasts also will be wrong. The economically inefficient and premature over development of Paris/de Gaulle, London/Stansted, New York/Newark, and Washington/Dulles are cited as examples. Because planners must deal with forecasting in all spheres of their activities, they will find this discourse insightful.

The authors recommend “dynamic strategic planning” as an alternative. It represents a new vision for airport planning in the current environment where privatized airlines compete in a deregulated environment, and privatized airports respond proactively to perceived opportunities and threats. The basic approach is that airport operators must dynamically adjust their planning programs over time to accommodate a variety of future scenarios. Examples of airlines’ decisions to shift their bases in the deregulated environment illustrate the implications for infrastructure planning and economic effects on airport operators. The chapter on Airfield Design points out the common mistakes, including: failure to provide flexibility, overbuilding in early stages of airport operations, adopting a non- integrating approach among the various airport elements, and insufficient appreciation for economic implications of design choices. Through dynamic planning, costly mistakes could be avoided. To address the increased complexity involved, guidance is provided for the appropriate use of computer-based tools, such as decision analysis and simulation models.

Planners will also find the chapter on Environmental Impacts of interest. It covers six (aircraft noise, land use, air quality, water quality, traffic, and wildlife) out of twenty environmental categories that must be considered according to the FAA’s Airport Environmental Handbook, Order 5050.4A. These categories are among the most significant, and are well covered. The section on noise particularly provides excellent, simply presented information on all aspects of noise analysis and mitigation. This easily understandable treatment of the subject is not commonly available. While the significance of public participation is outlined, the elements and significance of environmental impact study procedural requirements are not addressed. This was perhaps intended. An outline of the requirements with reference to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA 1969) would have rounded off treatment of this subject.

For airport operators and airlines, chapters on organization and financing, user charges, and cash flow analysis provide valuable information. The authors present incisive analysis of interactions between traffic operations over time, airline schedules, and configuration and design of airfield facilities. Effects on capacity and delay are analyzed, followed by recommendations for demand management and facility utilization. The concept of capacity as a function of level of service is well articulated (de Neufville argued almost three decades ago in Airport Systems Planning (MIT Press, Cambridge, MA,1976), that airport capacity is a function of level of service and should not be viewed like the fixed capacity of a bottle).

On the landside, there is a thoughtful analysis of the design and operation of “passenger buildings.” (The authors do not call it “terminal building” because many airports, such as Chicago’s O’Hare, transfer a large number of passengers to other destinations and do not “terminate” travel.) Practical discussion covers the interests of passengers, service providers, retail operators, and government. The concepts of “shared facilities” and alternative gate operations, and their implications on design and investment in new facilities are incisively analyzed.

The section on Ground Access and Distribution provides a clear perspective on the nature of demand and the role and effectiveness of alternative modes of travel. The book critically examines the effectiveness of people movers and mechanical baggage distribution systems, cautioning the reader to avoid costly mistakes such as that at Denver International Airport.

Dr. Richard de Neufville is Professor of Engineering Systems and of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Founding Chairman of the Technology and Policy Program at MIT. He has worked extensively for Boston, Dallas/Fort Worth, London, Mexico City, Miami, Paris, Sydney, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and many other airports and Civil Aviation Authorities worldwide. His expertise is in forecasting, risk management, competition between airports, and the configuration and design of passenger buildings. He received the FAA Award for Excellence in Aviation Education (with Prof. Odoni), the MIT Award for the Most Significant Contribution to Education, the French Chevalier des Palmes Academiques, and an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Delft. He has also had White House, Guggenheim, and US-Japan Leadership Fellowships.

Dr. Amedeo Odoni is the T. Wilson professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics and of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Co-Director of the Global Airline Industry Center at MIT. When two airport experts at MIT get together to produce a textbook, expectations naturally run high. Professors Odoni and de Neufville are no strangers to the team approach, as they co-teach that university's leading airport course. The resulting book reflects their classroom approach: It is comprehensive, methodological, and takes a scientific approach to airport planning. Like their course, the book is also superbly done. In the process, as often happens when science rules over instinct, many myths are shattered and common errors explained. The only drawback is that to fully enjoy the book, a solid mathematical foundation is required. For those who are math averse, however, there is still plenty to learn.
The authors have taken on many challenges in the way the textbook is structured, and successfully so. The textbook is modular, so that chapters are organized into logically separated topics that can serve as stand-alone references. Occasionally, this leads to repetition, but it greatly enhances the book's value as a reference. The authors very nicely combine U.S. and international content. The text spells out when U.S. and international standards are the same and when they differ. It also attempts to explain many of the differences.
One of the core areas of expertise presented in the book is capacity and delay. This is broken down into the topics of capacity, delay, demand management (both administrative and economic), and air traffic control (Chapters 10 through 13). This is supplemented by additional reference material, for example in the areas of queuing theory and on how to define the design peak hour for passenger terminal planning. All in all, roughly a quarter of the book focuses on capacity and delay.
The book has a few limitations: Many of the colorful anecdotes lack sources, which is unfortunate for the reader who wants to delve into the original material to learn more. This is understandable from the point of view that many of these anecdotes describe costly mistakes carried out by short sighted airport designers. Another, albeit minor, limitation is that many of the examples are taken from Logan International Airport in Boston. This is to be expected based on the authors' location. There are however, many other examples, from all continents. Finally, there are a few areas where the reader may crave more information, notably wildlife management, control of obstructions, and airport noise access restrictions in the post-Airport Noise and Capacity Act of 1990 environment.
None of these limitations seriously detracted from my enjoyment of the book. Where this book really excels is in its ability to break down the most difficult challenges facing airport planners into clearly reasoned analytical methods. This should help decision makers avoid expensive errors and provide a rationale for decisions that are otherwise driven by either instinct or politics.
It is obvious that this will become a standard reference for airport planners, designers, and managers alike. Even experts with many years of experience in the field will learn something new and have their preconceptions challenged. New students who are just entering the field are fortunate to have this text as their guide. Through this book, the authors have considerably broadened their audience from their MIT classroom, and carry on a tradition of sharing superb insights into the problems of airport planning and design.

Must reading for airport planning practitioners and academic

Professors de Neufville and Odoni use real world examples to show the changing context of airport planning and design. No longer limited to technical aspects, airport planners and designers must cultivate new and critical thinking on such issues as profitability, revenues, and users services. Influences such as airline deregulation, airport and airline privatization, a global airport industry, and advance technology require this new approach. Based on their teaching at MIT and consulting experience with airports and civil aviation organizations worldwide they provide knowledgeable guidance to a wide audience.

To airport consultants and officials in aviation organization the book provides a wealth of knowledge on all aspects of airport planning, design, and management. It cautions that typical master plans are too static and point out the shortcomings of forecasts, supported by examples of economically inefficient and premature over developments. To avoid costly investment mistakes they recommend "dynamic strategic planning" in the deregulated environment, where privatized airports and airlines compete and shift their bases.

To city and regional planners it provides valuable guidance for making informed decisions regarding the fiscal and environmental implications of airport development projects in their communities.

For airport operators and airlines, chapters on organization and financing, user charges, and cash flow analysis provide insightful guidance. The authors show how to analyze interactions among traffic operations, airline schedules, and configuration and design of airfield and passenger buildings. The concepts of shared facilities and alternate gate operations are also analyzed.

They address the effectiveness of alternate modes of ground access and distribution systems and caution against the costly and ineffective people movers and mechanical baggage distributing systems, such as the one at Denver International Airport.

The modular structure of the book permits different users to select and organize chapters according to their interests.

Collection of facts on airports around the world

Very well written text book, that has a collection of facts on various airports around the world. Mainly directed to students and professors in Europe and other countries where metric is a standard. I wish the authors have published two versions, one in feet-inches and other in metric. It is a good text for teachers in the undergraduate class, for teaching the basic concept of an airport system and how to manage and operate it. Reference to FAA and ICAO documents is good. I will recommend this text to practicing engineers who can get a grip on the concept of financial management and control in an airport system.

RUEY S. TSAY, PhD, is H.G.B. Alexander Professor of Econometrics and Statistics at The University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Dr. Tsay has written over 100 published articles in the areas of business and economic forecasting, data analysis, risk management, and process control. A Fellow of the American Statistical Association, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and Academia Sinica, Dr. Tsay is author of Analysis of Financial Time Series, Third Edition and coauthor of A Course in Time Series Analysis.

Unexciting but useful

As the Russians say, "the veteran horse plows a straight but shallow furrow". The book's preface acknowledges an overlap with the earlier "Analysis of financial time series" (AFTS), pointing out the novelty of included examples. I would call "overlap" an understatement, and describe "Introduction to analysis of financial data with R" (IAFD) as a subset of AFTS, illustrated with examples, implemented in R. I may have wished for something fancier than the oh-so-nineties repertoire of ARIMA and GARCH - the marginal exceptions show up in the sections on ACD and EVT - but accept that the book is meant to be a textbook in a master's-level course. (Yet is priced at over $100! This made the choice between four and three stars easy). I am unimpressed with its usage of R: the ARMA/GARCH analyses are quite repetitive, the plotting is basic, data manipulation altogether absent, an early encouraging use of quantmod package does not develop at all. (If you visit the book's web page - and you will have to, to get the scripts that, for example, estimate GARCH flavors; in the book, it's just "source(..)" - you will count nine R packages used: fGarch, MASS, evir, quantreg, quantmod, TSA, fracdiff, fBasics, mnormt). The occasional typos - the amusing "Merry Lynch" has been caught in the errata, but others remain - add to the impression of a path-of-low-resistance approach. Even so, given the author's caliber, you get a useful, quality book. I would suggest taking a look at IAFD and the two books by David Ruppert, to see which one(s) you prefer.

That would be fine if the author had presented more examples of how ...

(As a disclaimer, I have an advanced degree in signal processing and image analysis.) This appears to be a textbook for an advanced course in finance. I had hoped it was a book for investors who have an interest in programming and writing their own portfolio management software in R. Instead, it focuses on being a book that covers many of the advanced time series analysis methods used in financial modeling. That would be fine if the author had presented more examples of how the methods were applied to financial modeling and how the results were used. It would have been helpful to also have more comparisons of the pros and cons of the different methods.

What I found lacking in this book was more description of the application of the methods described. The presentation is: here is a method for analyzing a time series and here is some R code (sometimes). It assumes that the reader already understands the derivation/origin of the method being presented from a signal processing/mathematics standpoint. The text does a poor job of explaining the role of each method in financial modeling. How would one apply a given technique and exactly for what purpose? So, the book seems to be written for that narrow audience who knows the derivation of the methods presented and knows the application as well. Equations are presented with a terse explanation of their parameters.

Finally, the book cries out for a good editor. Dr. Tsay does not write clearly, unfortunately, and in many instances the syntax of the book is cumbersome, making the meaning difficult to discern.

Very dense and technical.

This is a really, really dense and technical read, especially for a book that calls itself an "introduction". I'm a graduate student in analytics but have been unable to get anything out of this book because it is so high-level and filled with unreadable equations. I'd only recommend it for those who have a very advanced understanding of statistics and mathematics (calculus and beyond), since that seems to be the assumed baseline for readers.
