Carmichael, Olympic coach and trainer, is probably best known for training cyclist Lance Armstrong, winner of four consecutive Tour de France championships. Here, Carmichael offers a sound approach for serious cyclists wanting to improve their abilities, compete more successfully and train without incurring injuries. The well-organized book begins with Carmichael talking about his background and then explaining the Carmichael Training System (CTS), a pyramid where people first set goals and then work through various stages of training. The chapter on diet will be useful to marathoners as well as cyclists; but the chapter "Tools of Training" on specific bike workouts such as HighSpeedSprints and FoundationMiles will be of interest only to serious cyclists. Illustrations are of Armstrong and other athletes coached by Carmichael, and the writing is clear and persuasive without being excessively inspirational. For example, the author states, "Before you can chase your dreams, you must know exactly what they are and where you are in relation to them. You must also have the courage to make your own rules and not allow yourself to be governed by perceived or imposed limitations." This is a first-rate guide for cyclists who compete or race and should also appeal to professionals who work with athletes such as coaches or physical therapists.

Carmichael, who has coached Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong, has written a book that will enable cyclists-- both novice and expert--to work in tandem with their machines to get the most out of their bikes and themselves. In his program, he stresses the importance of mental preparation, conditioning and training, and nutrition; his language, while simple and direct, does not dumb down. Where it is necessary, the narrative is illustrated with photographs; the chapter entitled "Reinforcing Your Training Program," for example, contains a number of photos showing how to use measuring devices to ensure that a bicycle is ideally fit to its rider. This is an excellent guide to obtaining peak performance in cycling competition, but the wealth of training tips and intelligent discussion of nutrition will be almost as valuable to noncompetitive cyclists and even to other athletes serious about conditioning. Carmichael's pitch for CTS, good info but could be better

I figure if Chris Carmichael is coaching Lance Armstrong, then he probably has some worthwhile things to share with the rest of us wanna-bes. If you have little or no understanding of cycling, training periodization, nutrition, tactics, or sports psychology, then you will definitely benefit from Carmichael's book. For those of us with a little background in these topics, you will probably enjoy reading the book, but its unlikely that you will garner any new insights to bicycle training or racing. I agree with my fellow raters - this book is an advertisement for Carmichael Training Systems (CTS). If you want (can afford) a coach, don't bother buying the book - pay a coach. I buy books so that I can learn enough to put together my own plan. If you want to do that, I recommend Joe Friel's outstanding The Cyclist's Training Bible (fantastic training plan advice, emphasis on goals, periodization, nutrition, etc.)or Smart Cycling by Arnie Baker (great indoor trainer workouts). Carmichael's book will make for good reading for any cycling buff, but you won't find out any "secrets" about Lance's program, and you will get more for your money with the other two books. Plus who wants to pay for CTS advertisement??

Very good, but a bit scattered

An excellent introduction to periodized training, with some good examples. I have to think there was supposed to be some sort of greater organization to the content than there seems to be, but it is still a pretty good read and reference for those who want to take their bike-specific training to the next level.

I had the pleasure of working with Bruce Nolop during his tenure at Pitney Bowes, and was always impressed by his remarkable skills as a communicator. He has brought those formidable skills to bear in "The Essential CFO." He has a lucid writing style, and shifts easily from big-picture strategy issues to the nitty-gritty details of execution. It's a useful set of reminders for sitting CFOs, and a must-read for any financial professional who aspires to that top job.

About the Author
Roger LeRoy Miller has served on the faculty of several respected universities, including the University of Washington, Clemson University, and the University of Miami School of Law. As a professor, he has taught intellectual property law and entertainment law, among other subjects. A widely published and respected author, his work has appeared in the Insurance Counsel Journal, Defense Research, California Trial Lawyers Journal, Antitrust Bulletin, Wisconsin Law Review, and Connecticut Law Review. He has authored or co-authored numerous authoritative textbooks on law, including BUSINESS LAW: TEXT & CASES; BUSINESS LAW TODAY: TEXT & SUMMARIZED CASES; and THE LEGAL ENVIRONMENT TODAY. Professor Miller completed his studies at the University of California at Berkeley and University of Chicago.

Frank B. Cross is the Herbert D. Kelleher Centennial Professor of Business Law at The University of Texas at Austin Law School, where his research centers on judicial decision-making, the economics of law and litigation, and traditional policy and doctrinal issues in administrative law. He has written several books as well as pieces for the Yale Law Journal, Columbia Law Review, University of Chicago Law Review, New York University Law Review, Texas Law Review, Virginia Law Review, Cornell Law Review, Georgetown Law Journal, Northwestern Law Review, and UCLA Law Review. Well written book

As a student, it is always nice when a textbook is well written. This book was written in a clear manner with the content organized logically. I actually enjoyed reading this textbook because it was so well written that I could quickly get a great grasp of the content. Even though the topic (business law) is rather naunced, I felt the textbook did a great job covering the details and finer points of the law/legal system. Plus my professor (who is the head of her department) raved about how this textbook is one of the best she's ever used so the teaching professionals seem to agree with my analysis too!

Great, but not Excellent... 4 and 1/2 stars

PRO: Although I cannot say I have read any textbooks of this nature (business law). I did manage to read most of the book (chapters 1-22) for my MBA class. The information is, like others mentioned, presented well in the book without talking above your head. The examples are clear cut and most definitions are equally transparent. Other textbooks of mine are non-traditional as they don't define terms/concepts like a dictionary, but rather provide elaborate examples as to their underlying meaning. Some chapters are rather dry reading while others were more stimulating for my intellectual palette. Try to struggle through these ebbs and flows. Regardless, you need to read the adjoining chapter in order to do the questions at the end.

CON: Since I read the text over a large number of chapters, I did run into what became a familiar speed bump on regular occasion. One of the authors seemed to have been fixated on using the conjunctive adverb "however" extensively. There are other words that can state opposing ideas besides "however." I'm not even sure if the two separate commas were the correct punctuation in all cases. Use something else or find a thesaurus.

I must say I never had to read so much in graduate school; HOWEVER, I'm glad I read this book. Enjoy!

This is my holiday card to all of you. I wrote it as a gift for my readers for the amazing support of the #Hashtag series over the past year. Spend the holiday with Romeo and family. This short story includes 5 recipes to make and share. Have a wonderful winter season!

About the Author
Cambria Hebert is a bestselling novelist of more than twenty books. She went to college for a bachelor's degree, couldn't pick a major, and ended up with a degree in cosmetology. So rest assured her characters will always have good hair. She currently resides in North Carolina.

Besides writing, Cambria loves a caramel latte, staying up late, sleeping in, and watching movies. She considers math human torture and has an irrational fear of chickens (yes, chickens). You can often find her running on the treadmill (she'd rather be eating a donut), painting her toenails (because she bites her fingernails), or walking her chorkie (the real boss of the house).�

Cambria has written within the young adult and new adult genres, penning many paranormal and contemporary titles. Her favorite genre to read and write is romantic suspense. A few of her most recognized titles are: #Nerd, Text, Torch, Tryst, Masquerade, and Recalled.

An awesome Christmas story with your favorite #Hashtag characters!

#Holiday is a perfect extra ending to the #Hashtag Series. I wasn't ready to say goodbye to these characters after #Heart so I was ecstatic to see we would get a holiday novella for them.

#Holiday takes place over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and is the first time the "Family" is spending the holiday together. We get to see both Romeo and Braeden's points of view in this book and I didn't think it was possible, but I may have fallen in love with them just a bit more!

Romeo being Romeo does everything in his power to make the holiday special for Rimmel and to keep up with some of the traditions she had growing up. He's sweeter than sweet and you can see after everything that has happened with these two, the love he has for her keeps growing. I loved being inside his head when they got stuck and him thinking about her driving his car. No one trusts Rim to drive any of their vehicles and it's quite hilarious.

Braeden is totally in love with his baby girl Nova, and his love for Ivy continues to get stronger and stronger. Seeing him with his daughter is absolutely amazing, and how he treats Ivy is beautiful. He works hard to show her she is the most important person in his life and I may have swooned when he was trying to tell her.

I have come to love these characters as if they were real, and I loved that Cambria Hebert gave us a short story so we could get more of Braeden, Ivy, Romeo, Rimmel, Drew and Trent, because well... these characters are just awesome. This book definitely needs to be read if you're a fan of the #Hashtag series. It's a very quick read that had me laughing and falling in love with the guys all over again, oh and the recipes at the end of the book... definitely going to be making some of those this season!

Amazing Short for Hashtag Fans

If you are a hashtag fan, this is a must read especially in the holiday season. Romeo and Braeden are our narrators for this fun story of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with the hashtag family. It's a beautiful mix of light hearted funny moments, love filled memories in the making as well as a few road bumps for the family. It's everything we love about the main series but shortened down to a 1-2 read and wrapped up in a Santa hat. Don't miss this one!

What a great addition to the #Series! It was great to spend the holiday with the characters and I loved seeing how their first holiday all together played out. It was good to see them get to enjoy each other and spend some time with them outside of all the drama that has followed them. And although it is a shorter read it is well worth it. And the bonus recipes are definitely worth checking out!

Comprehensive Collection

This is the total collection of every work done by M.C. Esher. This book is perfect for a serious fan of the graphic work of M.C. Esher. The book also gives biographical information as well as in depth information on many of his works.

Essential for the Escher fan

And c'mon - if you've seen his work, you're a fan.

The great thing about this book is not just the extensive and readable biography, but the complete (so they say) catalog of his graphic works. Even people very familiar with Escher's ouvre will be surprised by some of the entries here. They go back to work he did at ages 18 and 19, and show the devleopment of the Escher that has become so famous. It's just a little disappointing that the catalog is printed only in black and white, when so many of his works used color. The catalog reproductions are just that - a listing of his work, not a gallery, so the quarter-page size of most pieces is adequate for recognizing a piece, if not for appreciating it fully.

It is fascinating to see Escher's style develop though his (and the twentieth century's) twenties. Various influences early on suggest Beardsley (cat. 49, 67), Picasso (cat. 51, 58), or the pervasive Art Deco of his time (cat.34). Even then, some of Escher's later fascinations begin to emerge, including hands and reflective balls (cat. 88 and 80), symmetries and tilings (cat. 61, 65), and complex interactions of many figures in a repeating structure (cat. 90). The lesser-known parts of his work also start to emerge by the time he's 30, including delicate lithographs (cat. 129, 132). As much as I love his visual paradoxes and flirtation with the infinite, the lithos and mezzotints are the pieces that truly move me. "Snow" and "Blowball" (cat. 278 and 330) have an eloquent simplicity. "Eye" and "Drop" (cat. 344 and 356) demonstrate his classical sense and his perseverance with the demanding medium of mezzotint.

The text is also thorough and enjoyable - a good thing, since it takes up half of this heavy book, including its own set of illustrations. I admit that I have only skipped around this section, which starts by describing Escher's father. It's small wonder that his father was an engineer and that his son Arthur studied geology. Although an artist to the core, Escher had fruitful contact with mathematicians and crystallographers. He is one of very few artists that have successfully incorporated hard science into their artistic vision at such a visceral level, and the scientists appreciated that as much as anyone.

Although out of print, this book is available inexpensively on the used market. It's one of the best bargains around; if you've read this far, you'll probably find it well worth having.
