About the Author

Michael Boyle is one of the foremost experts in the fields of strength and conditioning, functional training, and general fitness. He is known internationally for his pioneering work and is an in-demand speaker at strength and conditioning conferences and athletic training clinics around the world.

Because of his expertise in sport performance training, Boyle has coached elite athletes on teams such as the Boston Red Sox, Boston Bruins, New England Revolution, and Boston Breakers as well as the U.S. women’s Olympic teams in soccer and ice hockey. In 2012, Boyle joined the Boston Red Sox coaching staff as a strength and conditioning consultant for the team, which later won the World Series. His client list over the years reads like a Who’s Who of athletic success, including retired American football defensive end Marcellus Wiley, 2012 Olympic judo gold medalist Kayla Harrison, and Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge.

Boyle was the head strength and conditioning coach at Boston University from 1984 to 1997. From 1990 to 2012 he was the strength and conditioning coach for men’s ice hockey at BU.

Boyle provides performance-enhancement training for athletes of all levels through his Boston-based gym, Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning, which has been named one of America's 10 Best Gyms by Men's Health magazine. Boyle’s range of experience includes training athletes from the middle school level to all-stars in most major professional sports.

Great book. Elevating the fitness industry.

Mike Boyle delivers! If you want to know what one of the brightest minds in the fitness industry is doing to get amazing results, then get this book. He doesn't hold anything back - you get the background info, the theory, the practical application, the programming and even access to exclusive videos on how to coach the exercises correctly. Pretty amazing deal for such a little bit of money.
I've been reading, watching and going to see Mike for over a decade. He is one of the few sources of legit info in our industry because he has been there, done that and is still doing it. He doesn't just train a few folks (or merely himself) and then spin a bunch of articles online to make himself famous. He is the real deal.
Also, I can't believe I'm the first to write a review! 15 years on Amazon and this is the first time:-).

Highly recommend

Tremendous edition! Boyle is THE authority on modern functional training for athletes of all ability levels. The second edition refines the first edition by including Boyle's years worth of additional training and testing of movements, principals, and progressions since the original Functional Training for Sports was published. That's what's so great about Boyle's publications: he seemingly holds nothing back. Rather than rely on theory, Boyle educates the reader on what programming principals and movements actually produce results and why. Highly recommend for coaches and athletes alike. You will not be disappointed, although you may find yourself rethinking your current programming.

Solid program design and philosophy from an expert in the field of functional training!

If you are a personal trainer, strength coach, general fitness enthusiast looking for a solid "cook book" and plan look no further. I have been reading and following Coach Boyle for over eight years and have always enjoyed his keep it simple philosophy that includes testing his methods and changing them when it isn't working. It's a pleasure to read how he assesses his athletes and uses this simple philosophy.

If you are looking for sound ideas that are tested and can help you build your training philosophy this is the book for you. Especially since this book covers many areas such as assessment, program design, speed training, dynamic warm ups. Everything is here to help you understand what Mike does in his facility.

Cabin Fever - So very good.

This book was more about relationships than anything else. It is not your typical "Western" novel. Instead it's an interesting blend of love, marriage, egos, regrets, in-laws, partners and adventure - all while trying to earn a living during the early 1920's American west. There were some impossible coincidences transpiring here and there that were, I guess, necessary for the story to unwind. A little action, a little fun, some twists, surprizes and a lot of believable human relations and feelings between the small cast of characters - all told with an interesting flair and style. A very talented author, yes.

Who're You?

This was a great read! B.M Bower provides wonderful and detailed character descriptions; but then sends them away and we don't read about them for several chapters. When they return they connect with other characters and more is revealed about them. I was disappointed with the ending. I felt that Bower didn't really know where, when or how the book was going to be finished. She gives us a "well made ending" that could be used for many other novels. Don't let the ending deter you from reading it. Its perfect for spending the day by the fire and are suffering from a case of cabin fever.

When I found that BMBower was the first woman to write westerns I thought I would read at least one of her books out of curiosity. I read Cabin Fever and loved it!!
The characters come alive , the writing is smooth and pleasent. The happy endings leave the reader happy also. Jean of the Lazy A was equal as the story line was smooth from chapter to chapter ,had interesting characters and a somewhat outlandish plot that made the story fun. The way Bower delves into her characters reminds me a little of Stienbeck. I am a fan and will read more of her work

In Anarchist Modernism, Allan Antliff reveals that anarchism was the formative force that lent coherence and direction to modernism in the United States between 1908 and 1920. Modernists participated in a wide-ranging movement that encompassed lifestyles, language, literature, and art, as well as politics. This is where I got started.

This was the first D&D product that I owned that resulted in actual gameplay with friends. It's actually a very well thought out product. The character cards each include a pretty effective rundown on what each character can do, and the DM screen has all the info that a novice DM might need to look up at a moment's notice. Thac0 is explained about as well as it can be. The adventures are charming, if somewhat bland, but the DM information for them is excellent for a beginner Dungeon Master, and a good format to imitate in creating one's own adventures. The included maps are effective, if somewhat conducive to a "board-game" flavor.

I really appreciate that TSR kept the Three Core Books format for this, as it helps new players to get accustomed to the usual format of Player's Handbook, DM Guide, and Monster Manual. This also allows this to be more comprehensive than the old Red Box or Moldvay B/X sets, as it includes saves, Thac0, spells and thief skills for play up to 5th level. A selection of appropriate monsters is included in the Monster Manual.

On the downside, the box only included one set of dice, and the purple plastic minis were uninspiring (and rather useless since there were, IIRC, no monsters).

The "D&D Adventure Game" that followed when 3rd edition was released was a poor successor to this one. While I still feel that the Moldvay "Basic" rules were just about the best possible intro to D&D, this boxed set did a fine job, and I'm still playing with the same group of friends, eighteen years later.

There is no one "best" approach to teaching systems. Our text is designed to allow for any one of several approaches to be followed.

General Coverage of Information Technology, Business
Processes, Transaction Processing, Internal Controls,
Systems Development, and Reporting Systems
Although the eighth edition contains 16 chapters, it is not necessary to cover all of them to deal adequately with the areas of internal controls, reporting systems, information technology, and systems development. Each of these areas is covered in a comprehensive survey chapter designed to act as stand-alone coverage for those not wishing to pursue a special emphasis. Instructors should assign chapters 1 and 2 as a general introduction to all major topics in the book. After this, students can complete the five functional areas in five comprehensive survey chapters:

Chapter 3 provides a complete foundation in information technology. Topics include the Internet, electronic commerce, and hardware and software issues relating to personal computers, midrange computers, and mainframes, as well as communication networks. Chapter 4 provides a summary of transaction processing and related technology. Chapter 5 provides comprehensive coverage of internal controls. Chapter 11 surveys the theory and practices relating to systems development. Chapter 14 surveys reporting practices as they relate to accounting information systems.

An Emphasis on Business Processes,
Internal Controls, and Flowcharting
The eighth edition provides considerable support for this approach. The instructor can cover internal control in great detail by covering chapter 5. Many instructors might find that no additional coverage of controls is necessary beyond this point.

The instructor can then cover chapter 6, which provides comprehensive treatment of computer and information security, and after that chapters 7, 8, 9, and 10, which deal specifically with internal accounting controls and the basic business processes. These chapters contain extensive flowcharts and case materials. In addition, there is a rich set of CPA exam questions included in the problem materials.

An Emphasis on Systems Development
Part III provides a comprehensive treatment of systems development. However, the concepts of the life cycle, structured analysis, blueprinting, and even logical data flow diagrams are introduced in chapters 1 and 2. Again, this allows the instructor great flexibility, because many will find the introductory material provides adequate coverage of systems development. However, those desiring more in-depth coverage of the systems life cycle have the option of choosing this focus right from the beginning.

Chapter 11 provides a complete introduction to systems development and discusses all major phases of the life cycle, emphasizing structured development, modularity, and documentation. This chapter should be adequate for a comprehensive introduction to the topic. Those who wish to cover the systems life cycle and systems development more thoroughly may want to include chapters 12 and 13, which examine systems planning, analysis, design, implementation, operation, evaluation, and control. Some instructors may wish to cover only one or several of these topics, and some instructors might want to also cover IS auditing in chapter 16. All chapters relating to systems development and the life cycle include a wide variety of questions, problems, and cases.

An Emphasis on Information Technology
Five chapters are devoted to computer-related technology and computer-based systems. Chapter 3 provides the basic foundation in information technology, and chapter 6 follows up with more advanced topics in information security. Chapters 10 and 15 provide more advanced topics, including distributed information systems and database systems. Chapter 16 focuses on the application of information technology to auditing.

An Emphasis on Decision Support and Reporting
The introductory chapters treat the entire information system from the decision support view. Managers and other recipients of information are treated as more than just receivers of the system's output. They are integral components of the system itself. This is supported by chapter 14, which provides a thorough coverage of reporting systems from the standpoint of decision support.

Helpful Within the Genre

Unfortunately, the 8th and 9th editions are out of date, having been published in 2000 and 2003 respectively. Now this book is in its 10th edition, published in August 2009.

I just can't believe you can get these older edition used for a few dollars before shipping. When a new textbook comes out in this subject, it is never cheap. The 10th edition is currently $146.67 and worth it if you're getting into AIS (accounting information systems). Still, the former editions can serve in places as a reference to this day.

For convenience, here's a link to the latest edition: Accounting Information Systems (10th Edition). I wrote a review for the edition in this link, the 10th edition.

Since I am in the field, although my area in not purely AIS since I'm a practitioner and not a designer of accounting systems, I can say things are good still. What I mean by that is that so far in this economic downturn, accounting information systems work has not been on the decline to my observation and from talking with others in it.

Of course, the subject is very dry. And if there is one warning that I may give it is about caring for your back. I had to reach a level in many subject areas as does everyone in AIS. Along the way I got advanced degrees and many certifications. But I ended up with serious back pain, surely the result of racking up plenty of sitting time in totally non-ergonomic chairs. It's not just something to think about but you need to manage it early through exercises to strengthen the core muscles that hold up your spine, stretching throughout the day, and using ergonomic chairs and principles.

One more thing. Not all AIS books are equal even though they're probably all with their special strong points.

With technology, we are constantly revamping our ideals and our techniques. This book has the reader left in the dark ages. Sadly, there are not many books on this specialized topic, so schools are still forced to use it. In my experience, this book is excellent when discussing internal controls and does a nice job of giving the reader a brief overview of how an accounting system works. Great for newbies into the field, but very dull for someone like me who has been worked with several different systems over the past ten years. That brings me to another point, the book is very dry. Don't look for humor or interesting facts here. Just plain information.

If you are a teacher considering this book, I encourage you to either supplement or update the information provided in the text or to find another book.
